Hi there,

Please comment on which style you'd like to play, and whether you're gonna participate. Even if you're not, please tell us what you'd like the players to play on.

Me, or Evo or Led Zep will try to find a suitable track from previous or current guitar techniques issues.

Let's close this topic by friday, to be able post the backtrack before/during the week end.

Reminder : the LYN Jam provides a back track (Drums + Bass + Rythm), in which each participant will have a certain slot (about 30 to 60 seconds), during which he can do whatever he wants (editing, add overdubs, add rythm, EQ, limited to his slot ONLY).

Guitar, keyboards, trumpet, vocals, piano, keyboards, bass, drums... all instruments welcome !!

(please, accept my apologies for the limited choices of "genres", but available backtracks are quite limited) (next time, your genres' suggestion will be taken into account, promise)

Let's ROCK the FUNK out and JAZZ it up till bleeding BLUE METAL will pour over the COUNTRY ! laugh.gif

i voted for metal, coz i prefer metal to other genre....most possibly i will not be able to participate in this jam session coz i'm not worthy to join tongue.gif ....

altho i voted for metal jam track, i actually like to see our forumers to jam in blues and funk....based on the last 2 jam session (if i'm not mistaken) ....

In music, everything's only limited to your imagination! Have you seen The Who's keyboard player? His synthesizer's plugged into the Line 6 POD XT!

He probably uses it for the effects and overdrive anyway, but it looked pretty cool heh.

something prog-metal like Dreamtheater would be nice, got lots of different variations in one whole song... can accomodate many styles of players we have. and also the songs are usually long, so more people can participate.

i wanna join, if i'm not using guitars, i might add in some synths or samples heheh...

Punk is the total opposite of Prog lol! Prog stands for progressive, and the music's usually complicated with odd time signatures, weird chords, lesser known keys etc... Basically music that's progressinglar.

Alright, gimme a sec, I'ill upload them.

Edit : Got them from various magazines. smile.gif

zeroleet, do you know about mass moves ? at first, everybody wants to be in and at the end just a handful of guitarists are doing it. so don't worry, we'll all sort it out in its own time.

ok, just let open the pool till this friday afternoon (msian time), which means thursday evening in tahiti (aiyo, headache...).

keep voting...

Fully downloaded and seeding already....
The Classic Rock track is a great one to start with.... lots of nice parts and a good rhythm to jam to.

Funnily enough, the pop-punk one sounds like something out from the Sims.....

I like thick and thin, from evo.com's post.
let me know if you guys like it too ? sounds like real fun biggrin.gif
then we go with splitting the slots to each one of us --> we can all work in parallel and copy/paste our slots in the final track !
2:15 -- 3:30, it's like the perfect time for a kick ass solo (or two).

Why don't we just concentrate on ONE first.... and since Classic Rock WAS the choice already.... I think we should stick to that.. THEN the metal track.

BTW..... are you going to add in another verse in Thick & Thin.... ie: Cut and pasting??

alright guys, here is the deal on Thick and Thin :
(1) 0:00 - 0:45 : part I (full guitars)
(2) 0:45 - 1:25 : part II (full guitars)
(3) 1:25 - 2:06 : part III (full guitars + melodic overdub)
(4) 2:07 - 2:46 : bridge I (drum + bass + acid guitars)
(5) 2:47 - 3:29 : bridge II (drum + bass + slightly more acidic guitars)
(6) 3:30 - 4:09 : part IV (full guitars)
(7) 4:10 - 4:43 : outro (repeated end of part IV)

Since we're nine we need to add 2 more slots for this track (copy/paste)

Now the thing we should do is decide who gets what.. I'll start, I'd like to go for the (4).
Since we're gonna duplicate two slots, we can duplicate a bridge or a part (I, II...)... depending on who wants to do what.
First to choose, first to be served... unless you negociate among yourselves.

I guess Jemi will join too ? Or wait for the metal track ? (in 2 or 3 weeks)

Just a thought : Regarding the shredders (jemi, zeroleet, ssslayerrr) they would fit in the bridge better (IMO !!! up to you to decide of course !!), which leaves more rooms for outer-modal runs, since there is less harmony.

Btw I guess 'Slayer' will not going to join since he now days very busy with his own business. That's why we never see him online. He even gave his black J custom to his friend.

I'm very busy with my workload. Besides, i prefer reading "tau keh" (musical notes) then playing off my head. Yea, i'm a very weird guitarist/bassist coz my first instrument was the piano ... so i was taught to play by the book.

See first la, coz i need to find the jack to connect anything to my sound card.

How do i get the jam track ? BitTorrent is not moving ....

led zep... yeah, i've some ideas like that BUT it's gonna be a good challenge to make them sound good : i really suck, technically (you did notice, didn't you ?).

evo.com ... copy and paste sounds interesting, at least we're not influenced by others.

Pix, yeah, the track's still in the blues rock context even during the bridge, maybe some Robben Ford licks? Bah, easier said than done. tongue.gif
Nah, you can get a good tone and play pretty well. I guess we all have more important things to do in life -than practising 2/3 hours a day-, we're no pros!

evo.com, copy and paste seems alright but the solos might not flow with the next. sad.gif

No, what's great about Gilbert is that he has a great blues feel/dynamics in his playing & I think it reflects on your playing. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif Maybe the sweeps didn't fit very well but it's your style of playing. thumbup.gif

i didn't start yet... and won't listen to zeroleet yet neither... i need some motivation before playing, and that wouldn't be happening after listening to zeroleet laugh.gif

regarding paste/copy, I can do it, but i feel that EBP or blacktrix might do it in a better way... those are the pro DJ in here. don't forget to watch the background volume of each track too.

xccude> imo the flow of the solo isnt really that 'smooth'... the tapping parts not bad but maybe you should try to take the key changes into account at every stop to make the solo more fluent. Just my 2 cents anyway. Good job thumbup.gif

blacktrix, what's your problem ???
have you done your part already ? check the end of previous page for details.

EBP > i'm not sure we'll wait till there, it's in 2 weeks... maybe you can do the next jam instead.

the last slot is still available for the ones who want to join... where are LYN music enthusiasts ? what about HH7 ?

Ok. Will do the recording over the weekend or if I have any strength left from classes.....
Tommorow is a full day (9-6) of Uni, and then Friday I have a hot date with not one, but 2 girls (at the same time!!!) and then weekends I can take a breather......

Can someone repost Xcude's track? My download keeps dropping from yousendit

i'm working on mine, should be finished before the week end... for the last 3 days i was scared, i thought I lost "it", seeing what a hell of a time i had trying to improvise something on such a track. but last night was so fruitful, i've no more worries laugh.gif
it's just a question of method, for me, it seems. I need to hear the track many times, and sing a solo before i can actually do something "acceptable". And then I have to loop 10s and do that part of my solo again and again until I can imagine what's going to happen next.
In other words, i'm stupidly slow.

Sorry had to cut you out of it there.... but needed time to build up my parts.......

Interesting fact:

I downloaded a bunch of Amplitube settings off a torrent website and the one I used was the best sounding "crunch".... and guess what.....
It's called "Zak Wylde"....

Couldn't resist trying it out!

The couple of parts I loved was the pitch changing at 1:11 and again at 1:17... I always liked solos that followed the rhythm of the song rather then go againsts it all the time.....

I guess guitar classes finally paid of huh??!!

People go to Church on Sunday morning..... I go play guitar instead.... an entirely new religous experience!!!

Worst of all..... I'm a Roman Catholic!!!

EDIT: Xccude.... Been listening to your solo over again.... I think you'll benefit if you used a metronome to practise...... learn to play within beats and control of your strings too.... This is just some friendly advice.... we are all here to learn anyway....

My timing was ALL over the place just 1 month ago. My teacher made me use the Metronome like crazy and started to work on sixtrulplets now.... Fingers hurt like a b***h everytime I finish my classes/practise.

The tapping was really good though..... I can't even master tapping yet.... everytime comes out crap.... that's why I just stick to the stuff I know best... Pentatonics, Wah fueled Brutality, alternate picking and I think that's about all the skills I know....................................... whistling.gif whistling.gif whistling.gif whistling.gif whistling.gif

Another thing... I like the way you use the wah, as in you don't overuse it to cover up your bad playing, not that you play bad anyway. thumbup.gif

evocom > i don't care really... take your time, the dead line is about end of the week end.

hh7, you were on the list of the participants (9 participants), but you never told us which slot you wanted (6 slots). the rule was : 1st to ask, 1st to be served AND/OR copy-paste additional verses.
you were never removed from the list.

yes, of course, he can take any slot he wants, and blacktrix will copy his slot somewhere in between the others. that's a solution that was proposed at the beginning.

I don't know... but Reload's guitar tracks just drowned everything else....

On my PC.... every part was soft except for his.... Nearly blew my speakers apart!!!!

If you did it in Audition (or similar tracking tool), please redo and lower the volume of your guitar part.......

high tension ?.. is it an electric guitar or an "electrified" guitar you're playing on ? laugh.gif (sorry, that's lame...)

my wife strongly despised my current solo (and so did I to be frank), so i have to redo it biggrin.gif she found it was too mechanical sometimes and too "out" at some other points ! I was definitely "in" but I guess too much on the edge, so a listener would feel it's out ? Interesting. Anyway I have to start again from scratch... I'll share it with you though, later, because I really liked the mechanical part... an ultra fast tapping thinggy, like surfin with the alien "chaingun".

Am I too self-indulgent if I listen to my track over and over again???
I think this is one of my favorite solos I have ever done........

And Reload..... the levels are much better this time around....... good job!

I'm not that good. Anyway I would like to give my 2 cent advice:

1) Carefull on your timing
2) Do not play completely out off scale.

It's OK play abit slow.

Actually, have to agree with Jemi..... alot of us still think playing fast is impressive......

As long as the groove is there, doesn't matter if it's fast or slow. My solo wasn't earth shattering fast... but at least I TRY to keep it in time and nail all the notes right everytime.......

Yeah, second Jemi's comment. HH7, work on your bends and vibratos too, some of the bends aren't in tune. thumbup.gif

Haven't start recording yet lol, maybe this Friday. smile.gif

Also, whoever's recording next, please erase (or silence) the static noises at the end....... I still cringe when I hear it.

Its not a comment, just piece of advice to all including me.

As blacktix said, its not about playing slow slow or fast.

This an opportunity to all of us to learn scale & melody. Best to have discipline on our playing.

Take your time when creating melody.

Try this:
Re play what ever recorded.

I know... on the last Jam...... took me soooooo long to nail one. I'm STILL not happy with it.....

THat's why this time I learned that the first few takes are always the best.

ebp.. still working on the rock track.. BUT you can already find a metal backing track, and start the whole process for it.
I won't participate to the metal track, so you're on your own, guys...

Damn, is that really you? notworthy.gif thumbup.gif thumbup.gif notworthy.gif
I love the guitar harmonies at the beginning, sounds bloody cool & amazing. thumbup.gif And legato bit (How did you get the thin Satch-like tone? Set your wah opened halfway?)right after it came with a surprise... Darn, imo it's the best one yet among the other solos in the LYN Jams (Everyone else's was darn good too nonetheless thumbup.gif ), cheers Pix! thumbup.gif

ok the solo is divided into 4 parts :
the intro : i just "preempt" the lick that ends the verses and repeat it with small variations. I had such a hard time trying to find what could start a solo when there is such a silent in the rythm. The solution was already in the song wink.gif There are three guitars at the same time here, one on the left, one on the right, and the third one in the center. The third one is doing a pinched harmonic at one point, you can hear in the background. The three guitar gives a fjooking depth to that lick !
the tapping : it's not a legato but a taping done with the pick, and i topped it up with a thick phaser, so it hides the mistakes i did and gives a nice "surfin with the alien" touch. (yes, i'm being modest tongue.gif ) my wife too says it sounds too "thin". But the previous riff sounded thick, doesn't it ? Thick and thin, anyone ?

the solo : very satchy too, it's a descending pentatonic (the extremist), with a strong bend every two notes. Then it goes on a chromatic ascending thinggy.
the pinched harmonic boing (few milliseconds..) : i added a lot of reverb and extreme phaser.. without effect, it sounds so so, but the effects make it sounds like the guitar is breathing, exhausted by the previous solo and taking a step back before running into the end solo.

the end solo : a satch thinggy(how did you guess ??)... a repetitive lick (which you can hear that one all over his live G3), with strong "desperate" impact, the guitar is irritated and tired, she'll never manage to make it till the end. Then I keep going on typical "pixolydian" blues, and i end it with the intro lick (a bit in a hurry, it's pretty hard for me to fall right in time there...).

the guitar is the JS plugged in the PodXT (the amp is the Treadplate with strong Classic Disto + light Sine Chorus + Reverb + -8dB Compressor + -50dB Noise Gate)

hey pix, love your solo man!
very satch-y if you ask me especially the legato part thumbup.gif

true satch influence eh?hehe.

anywayz, i may take a while to do my solo..cos now my laptop is really screwed. Everytime i try recording something, theres a huge amount of delay in the recording and thus causes everything to sound out of timing...im not sure what caused my laptop to lag more than before(in fact like hell now!) with the amount of space still more than 70% of the hard drive capacity...aih..

check the preferences / settings of your recording software ? anyway, you can always move your solo so it can fit the beat...
in garage band, i know that happens if i set the "snap to beat" / "snap to grid" option : my solo track is moved so the software sees it as "fitting" the beat. But it doesn't work easily, so most of the time, the software moves it out of the tempo !

BTW, I didn't do any legato in my solo... what's wrong with you guys ? can't recognize tapping from legato ?

PS: thx for the nice comments also, it's quite an honor from a player that totally amazes me blush.gif (= you, zeroleet)

It means that you could actually hide the 'pick-tapping' technique & sound smooth/effortless... isn't that a good thing? thumbup.gif

well, it's just perfectly natural for me, i guess i didn't even notice that i'm playing so smoothly flex.gif

doh.gif yeah ! of course, i'm kidding ! i'm not the stinky one here... blacktrix is. hahaha.

actually, try it by yourself:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------etc... etc...--------------------------------
------------------------------------------------(15-17) x4--(13-15) x4------
--(13-15) x4--(15-18) x4----------------------------------------------------

it's a pentatonic run, simply repeat that lick up the scale...
the higher note is tapped by the pick. the lower note is steady, simply pressed on by a finger, without moving.

haha, blacktrix, your solo is a serious a$$ kicker ! very metallish country stuff, and you manage to maintain a very lenghty and exciting melody. It's like the solo is flowing by itself. 0:55 is a great idea..
I would just propose you to speed up some parts at some points, because you keep a constant rythm... you should try to spice things up once in a while.

ahh damn i knew i was right at first then! tongue.gif it sounded like tapping, but since it was so smooth(you know your loving this comment) it didnt really sound like one and that fooled loads laugh.gif

like what led_zep said, you managed to hide it so its hard to distinguish..hehe.

oh btw, its not the preference settings...its just my laptop....i think..its been really reallly really slow and i mean really slow lately and ive tried defragmenting and deleting all spyware and all..yet to no avail( sorry for the off topic discussion btw)

Yay! Pix likes my solo! *glee*
didn't really worked THAT hard on it..... like you said, I just let it flow.....

And I wish I CAN speed things faster.... my speed still isn't at it's peek yet.... but practising every damn day.... And of course you know that like Zakk, I try to pick every single note instead of relying on hammer-ons/offs.

Yes. I love the kill switch effect...... I can ALMOST duplicate a flange like effect with just the switch....

I like your tone, and good phrasing on the solo - there's a bag of interesting licks there. thumbup.gif

I just thought that maybe some bends were a little off? Also, the transition is a little messy, but it's not as if we planned all of this out. biggrin.gif

Yeah, sorry about that Reload... but the overwritten part has this sort of 'tension' perfect for the finale haha... tongue.gif
I've planned our certain notes, but the messy parts are improvised on the spot lol. Yeah I gotta improve on that lol.

Anyway I used the Buzzsaw Fuzz patch from the Magicstomp for the 2nd part, glad you like that one XCcude. thumbup.gif
