The company's HR arranged for medical check up at twin tower medical center. I am not sure if going to other clinics will help because maybe the company prefer only that clinic, I don't know. Is it for employee to choose or employer to specified?
*
it could be a directive from the insurance company that medical checkup to be done at twin tower medical centre.

it is an open secret that insurance companies are very selective on panel clinics 'qualified' to do medical checkup for new employment, etc.

cost control engineers came from all kinds of engineering background.

usually they started in procurement (now called supply change management) as buyers, but a few guys started as planning engineers.

Knowing that it mite abit dumb to ask this, but its been bothering me for awhile..

Would the rough sea and monsoon affect the upstream of the oil and gas as Ive read through out the forum that waves can come up 7 to 8m high...
*
I dont quite understand your question. Below could be the answers to your questions:

- During monsoon season, usually offshore activities will slow down but this doesn't mean that the platforms will stop their production.

- The platforms had been designed for extreme environmental condition (return period of 100 years) where the wave height could exceed 10m high. So there's no issue on the platforms' integrity to withstand the monsoon weather.

Hai guys.. I really2 need opinions regarding this..

I'm one of PETRONAS scholar that was recently graduated (Oct. 2012) from local university and my background is in Electrical & Electronics Eng major in Instrumentation & Control. I have passed PETRONAS structured interview and within 6 months (from 1st Oct. 2012), HR will try to find the placement for me either at the headquarter or their subsidiaries.

Unfortunately, till now, 3 months + already, there still no job offer for me from PETRONAS. Should i wait, or just apply for other company. Btw, previously i have done my industrial internship with Baker Hughes under drilling & drill bit systems dept.

My questions;
1) Should i wait for PETRONAS? I really didn't intend to breach the contract since they are kindly enough to sponsor for my degree.

2) Should i just apply back at Baker Hughes for field engineer position? Till now i didn't apply any position at Baker because the last time i contact with HR, they need to see release letter from my sponsor before they can offer a position to me.

Help me please... Thanks
*
During my time (in late 1980's), Petronas would release the bond of its scholars if it did not provide jobs to them within 1 year from the day the scholars registered their degree completion with Petronas.

Maybe you should check the terms and conditions of your scholarship.

I 'escaped' the bond... brows.gif

Sorry if I was bit harsh but I noticed abgkik having to answer a lot of questions that I think was very uncalled for. In this industry, even if you use cable (I know of instances where this happens), they don't last long. It's a demanding industry, you can't coast thinking about the next paycheck, you need to earn it.

As for cable or networking, if you follow my post since V2, I kept saying this mantra.... this is a small industry, you need to network network network. Why? People who knows you, your work, will have an easier time recommending you for work or hiring you. I personally would be more comfortable hiring a person I know can do the work than put my faith in a resume of someone I don't know ...
*
I agree with your stand.

There's no need to apologize for being harsh; some of forumers here deserved it. whistling.gif

Hi bro azraeli, as a student US bound for pet engineering, What are the advise on uni choice for petroleum engineering? smile.gif haha...thought of seeking a lil' advice to aid me in my decision making since you are from USA previously.
*
I know Shell insisted on its scholars (who are majoring in petroleum engineering) to get admitted to Texas A&M in Houston. That univ must have a damn good pet eng program for Shell to do that.

Anybody here want to share their experience offshore?
I have seen snakes, dolphins, and even a dead body!!

And how do you cope with 1 month or more time away offshore? Longest i have been is 2 months but I'm hearing stories of even 3 months.

I only do it for the experience and money, and I hope to be able to move into project management with client after 5 years total of engineering with consultant and operation experience with main contractor.

Anybody working with client and can share roles and requirements of project engineer? For reference only.
*
I could never sleep well when I went offshore for short visits. I always missed the 5am safety talks blush.gif ; but the platform supervisors never bothered us. Probably we're on the platform for only a few days. But we had to work fast to complete our works on the platform due to the short stay. Food was plenty, only the quality had not been as good as before like in the 90's. Cut cost punya hal... nod.gif

My first job experience was hands-on and at times very demanding. It was always the best feeling to be able to go to bed. Hahaha.

Food is good too since you're fed so many times in a day. I gained a a good 10 kg in a duration of 1+ years but of course not solely because of that. Hahaha.
*
you need to differentiate between food QUANTITY and food QUALITY. you were referring to food QUANTITY offshore, but i was talking of food QUALITY. yes, it's true that food QUANTITY is no issue on the platforms, there's alway plenty of food to go around. but the food QUALITY had gone down, not necessarily bad, but not as good as before.

Being female is an advantage these days because majority of the O&G company is trying hard to balance the work force between man and women. For example the company I currently employed is targeting 30-40% women employee by 2015. So you should give a try. But for the CGPA, its a bit though as a lot of high scoring student is competing to get a summer internship with O&G company. But you'll never know until you try to apply. Give it a shot.
*
last time in my previous company, we used to see females engineering student having higher CGPA than the males when we sift through the candidates application for internship. in fact we had to lower the CGPA cut off point for males engineering student in order to qualifry them to do their internship program with us.

i dont think the situation has changed much now. so you will have a tough time trying to compete with your fellow females for internship slots with high CGPAs.

good luck. smile.gif

Roughly:

Most metal to metal joints in this world are welded.

Welders are one of the most in demand job in the world actually.

Often to start as a welding inspector you need a CSWIP 3.1 most of us look down upon PCN WI's. Inspectors can work either for the client side (big bucks) or the contractors side. A 3.0 will help you gain the experience to take the 3.1 examination.

After a few projects usually you will meet some of the same inspectors you know cause they suka lompat.
*
There's a price to pay for working as welders. Some welders have to retire early (in their 40s) since their eyesights deteriorate badly. sad.gif

hi...quick one..

Can anyone give me the function of Hydrostatic Collapse Ring on the legs of jacket...

any Structural Engineers around here? hehe..thanks much
*
The jacket legs are sealed on both ends (by rubber diaphragms at bottom jacket leg) during installation to add bouyancy to the jacket. When the jacket is partly submerged in the water, some parts of the jacket legs are subjected to water (hydrostatic) pressure. The hydrostatic collapes ring plates are welded to the jacket legs at certain interval span in order to strengthen the jacket tubular legs from 'collapsing' due to water pressure at this stage.

The seals are then punctured (remotely) to flood the jacket legs for the jacket to be uprighted and put in place.

1. The fact that you created this id just to diss an old time forumer who has been contributing a lot to this thread and other related threads is just sad.

2. If you really have a problem with Petronas, why don't you highlight this to the HR and management instead of being a pretentious douche. You may get better feedback and prolly a solution to your dilemma.

3. It is surprising to know a Petronas staff who was a scholar and passed the strict interviews displayed such attitude.

4. It is either you serve your bond and you pay back to Petronas. It is that simple. Some of my UTP friends were scholars. Exxon seems no problem getting them on board.

5. Grow up.
*
I was a Petronas scholar too, ages ago. When I came back after graduation (with honors too), it was at the tail end of recession in the late 1980s. Jobs were still not 'plentiful' in the country. Petronas also did not have many opening for fresh graduates (it had hundreds of fresh graduates at that time), and they let me off the bond (yeehaa! thumbup.gif ). I work in O&G related companies from construction, design consultants and operators till today.

The irony was, my batch who had to repeat their classes and graduated a year or 2 after me were quickly hired by Petronas when they came back! I guess the timing was perfect for them since Petronas, especially Carigali was expanding rapidly. But I was glad they did not try to 'call me' back after letting me go. PHew! whistling.gif I was already earning double the pay of Petronas engineer of the same age.

A friend (grad from UTP) purposely flunked the interview so that she won't be called to work for Petronas. She worked for contractor in Kerteh, paid off the Petronas scholar loan within 3 years. Total amount that she paid was a lot lesser than public university.

She told me she has no regret after seeing how miserable her friends right now at Petronas. biggrin.gif
*
you must be younger than I, since I was already working for a few years when UTP was first set up....

but you've already earned more than I do, annually. And i had to pay taxes some more wink.gif

i had an opportunity to earn close to a million ringgit annually, but the price i had to pay was to work in Nigeria. No way! biggrin.gif
