I don't think a rotary hammer is a basic tool for a DIY-er, because you don't use this everyday. For DIY-ers, you should be slowly adding to your tool collection (unless you're rich enough to buy everything at once), starting from the most commonly used tools such as power drills etc depending on the kind of DIY work you're planning to do.

Nothing wrong with getting one if the price is right, but I don't think this is an essential.

The first power tools that I brought when get a new house is the hammer drill. It is the only tools that I can hang anything. It is also a basic tool to conceal anything. If you don't want to get others power tools, a hammer drill is a must. I don't know what I can do with my new home whithout this tools.

Even now I seldom use it after settle everything, I still need it for home maintainance. Need to drill some hole for new items add in. Need it to replace some conceal item if spoil.

I did have some power tools to add in like orbiter sander, grinder, chain saw, wood rotary saw, bench drill, hand drill etc after some time. But many are in dust after getting lazy.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I think a rotary hammer drill and a hammer drill are two different types of tools. A rotary hammer drill is not a basic DIY tool.

There are same tools. All rotary hammer drill have 3 functions (hack, drill, hack+drill). For normal light hacking jobs this tools is good enough. If for heavy duty demolition (rc/pillar hack) then you must need the demolition hammers. Try to get good branding tools, don't ever buy cheap 'japalang' china made wan, not lasting. I believe since you are DIY man, you save cost a lot already. So try spend some money on good tools, act like pro ma.....

Isn't a hammer drill one where you can choose whether to drill normally or to use the hammer function, whereas a rotary hammer drill is one where the rotary hammer is working at all times? As for the functions, hack, drill, hack+drill I think there are a few types that can do this. Usually a hammer drill is used in a DIY setting, whereas a rotary hammer drill is used on construction sites as it is a professional tool.

I agree with you...no point getting lousy tools. Going for quality usually pays off. Been using Bosch mostly, but there's a Black&Decker stud finder I'm looking for

i was experienced too for conceal wire in the wall,
if u r using the rite tools its not really hard to do it. as i know hammer drill is not to use to hack the wall. its just use for to make a hole. yes its has hack function.
u should using jack hammer.. trust me, ur works easy if using this, but before u hack the wall u must use this below thing. i dont know the name. and not that angled grinder..
but it is worth for u to buy this two tools? its aint cheap bro..

There are the same. But rotary hammer have 1 more function which is just a hammer. Rotary hammer drill have drill only, hammer drill and hammer. Rotary hammer provide more punch joule compare hammer drill.

I wish to get the rotary hammer if I knew it exist at that time. Make my DIY work much more faster.

You can use hammer drill to hack too. Hammer drill the hole along the line that you want to hack. As many as possible. Than slant your tools and hack drill connect the hole along. Finish up with some chisel and hammer. It is a bit slow. But still can do the job.

writeprotect, angle grinder and rotary hammer with chiselling will do. i used bosch gws7100t with 105mm cutting disc, diamond cutter certain area to small hard to used esp wall and celling L, you cant cut. plus its cheaper also and versatile. Jack hammer or demolation hammer to heavy la for that size I used bosch 2-26dre for chiselling off the wall more than enough. good demolation hammer is more expensive and only got one usage.

alternatively can get Einhell mansory channel cutter/wall chaser Einhell BT-MA 1300 for rm500+- that is available in malaysia.

I think it'll take a longer time using a hammer drill. Maybe acceptable for DIY, but not so good for a professional. I think a rotary hammer drill would be a good choice, but of course it depends on the kind of DIY work you'll be doing. Different products for different needs


I think we'll agree to disagree here. Both are similar, yet different tools. They perform similar functions, but operate in a slightly different manner, so they cannot be the same tool. A hammer drill is not powered by a piston AFAIK.

i dont say that rotary hammer cant do the job.. but its really pain ur body, if u are using jack hammer it will save ur time and energy.. yes it not worth for DIY. coz maybe use it for one time only and keep in store...

but if u are only make 1 line to conceal the cable its ok la.. but if for one home... sure patah tangan.. hehe..

it advisable to use a pvc pipe inside with wire. reason why is that easy for u to tarik the new wire if u need to change. For the plastering part, u need to buy the plaster filler or quick dry cement. After u have apply the filler and it had dried up, sand it down with sand paper. After that, paint with undercoat and then wahlah... siap.

If got junction is still not easy to pull new wires

my bro in law is an electrician and sometimes i saw him do it. For replacing the new wire, on the old wire, he tied a dawai with new wire. Tarik it replacing it with new wire in the other end.

Off topic abit, if i want to do plaster ceiling just to conceal the wiring, but not intending to install downlight, what is the minimum depth? 50mm?

any recommendation who to hire to do a professional job making longkang for concealed wiring? someone who has all the right tools for the job

silly question - will doing so weaken the concrete ceiling structurally?
