No. I have a development firm dealing mainly on web. We are also quite new to the mobile space. It is a new venture for us. So, let's just say that our track record is limited smile.gif

Let's see. I expect it to hover somewhere around 2.1k. They'd be stupid not to launch it during Christmas. Then again, given Nokia's track record, it's hard to say.

QUOTE(luckyhillkop @ Oct 22 2012, 09:53 AM)
I got this from wpcentral. This is to me the clearest way of explaining "multitasking" in WP. (Don't know if this guy is telling the truth or not. Jonchai, with your knowledge of WP, would u be so kind to give your input in this?)
From the above, I think i'll be ok with WP's "Multitasking". It make sense, if this is what it takes to keep the phone smooth and fast, I'm all for it. I just hope the developers will not let WP down.

The disadvantage of this way of multitask is as below, a real situation example.
I'd still be ok with this (I think).
*
Let's knock it off point by point.

1. It's true. WP does not exactly "multitask". Meaning, apps are suspended (using a fraction of the memory) when you switch away. There are exceptions like you quoted and on top of that, I'd like to add download / upload too. Take marketplace for example, if you're downloading an app, you move away, the app will continue to download (at the same time, keeping your WiFi connected). If you want some true multitasking like on PC, you run antivirus, play game, play song and download movies all at the same time, then WP will surely disappoint. Its multitasking is certainly restricted. Let me give you a better example, you can't Youtube and at the same time chat on Whatsapp, neither will there be a "hover" view like you can find on Note 2. But if you're downloading an app from marketplace, it will continue to download while you're chatting.

Another example will be this. If let's say in reverse, you're watching video on Youtube, your Whatsapp cannot update itself (to get the latest messages, this may change in WP8, not too sure yet) but it can receive "push" notification. On WP7 it's known as "Toast". You can always experiment this. Whenever you receive a push whatsapp notification, go turn off your data + wireless. Then open Whatsapp. You'll realize that Whatsapp is still showing your old messages. It is upon opening the app that the "core" will update itself.

This is by design. An app is separated into 2 parts. Core and Tiles. One can update independently without the other.

Suspension is by design. It places your active app in the highest priority so that it can use all resources it may need and not lag one bit.

2. Yes. This is correct. 512MB is very very limited. What you quoted is correct. Fast App Switching is the closest you can get in terms of multitasking, which isn't really bad considering that you can be where you left off. Of course, like it's stated, only if the developers aren't lazy. Actually, it's not too much work. I'd give it an additional 15 minutes to implement support for fast app switching, that's it.

For the last part, I beg to differ. Half way through the call, I found myself without pen / paper. I was able to switch out, opened up OneNote and started writing some references. Windows / Start button is the key.

Thanks man, very clear. Appreciate u taking time to explain this. From what I understand, this multitasking isn't much different from iOS. Don't think it will be a problem to me.

Cheers  smile.gif

Yea, it isn't too different from iOS, apart from being able to do a bit more, but that's about it.

No worries biggrin.gif

Nfc is still blue tooth transfer.

Nfc just speed up connect but transfer still use bluetooth. So if bluetooth transfer not supported than nfc could be for tagging and maybe payment gateway
*
Bluetooth file transfer is very much supported on WP8. Just not on WP7.8 / 7.5.

Can't wait for 920 hands on, right now it's all 8X.
*
Yeap. Basically, transfer of songs is considered a violation. You buy the songs, you own the songs. But you can't go out and share the songs. It's a violation in US and Euro, as far as I'm aware.

yup same like those song cds which won't let ppl make copies of it. By right though, we if we bought it, it's up to us what to do with it as long as we don't sell it. But this is a different matter altogether.

another thing that catches my attention is smart dialing is still missing.
*
What do u mean by smart dialing?

Like press and hold a number then it will auto dial to the person?

If that's the feature you're talking about, then it already exists. It's called tiles. You pin the "smart dial person" to start, tap, call. It's even faster than smart dial on Android where you need to bring up the keypad and press & hold.

Not a deal breaker to me but a very useful feature, especially considering how lazy I am tongue.gif

Ah, okay. I was a little confused.

There's already an app that does that, though not natively, the app gets the work done biggrin.gif

Smart dialing is like Press 2(ABC) to call either Aaron, Brandon and Cassandra, press 3(DEF) to call Dawson, Edward, Freddy.  nod.gif  nod.gif

Do u do reviews jonchai? I think you'd do a good review (if somehow u could get your hands on 920 or any other wp8).

They still don't fix/add full USSD functions I guess. Any idea if Digi/Maxis/Celcom will make apps for those stuff?

And Data Sense(monitor data used).. only the carriers can add it to the phone?
*
Data Sense is native. It monitors your outgoing bandwidth usage. It's not carrier bound, so no worries there.

You go in, set your limit, and leave it. It will prompt you when usage nears limit, that's about it.

As far as I'm concerned, USSD is in (according to Windows 8 SDK). WP8 SDK is not released until tomorrow, but if Windows 8 has it, I don't see why WP8 doesn't.

I think the app can monitor your Data usage and all, the only thing that is carrier bound is the Data compression where it compresses webpages according to your date usage. Well that's far as i read somewhere.
Yeah, sadly Microsoft are not promoting their features enough. Other reviewing websites are doing much better job. Don't do it half ass-ed Microsoft!

Microsoft has always been known to do half-assed marketing. Only exception? Surface

Can't remember now but I read somewhere that it's carrier bound. And it's more than just a data monitoring feature, it can automatically adjust your setting to save on your data usage when ur about to reach limit, like making wifi a priority for data etc.
*
I believe that's the part about the compression. If carrier, doesn't support, your data sense can make do without the compression, much like Nokia Counters

Kids corner is perfect for children. Many parents would definitely buy into this. Of course, if people don't know about it, it's as good as nothing. We all know Microsoft's marketing sucks. So, time to buck up Microsoft. It's a good USP there.

Alrite thanks.

So far there are a few gripes of wp7 that isn't fixed in wp8.
- No separate volume control.
- no lock screen orientation
- no text reflow on browser
- wifi stops when screen is lock.

This 4 will annoy me a bit.
*
1. Confirmed.

2. Confirmed, although it doesn't annoy me as much.

3. No problem without text reflow for me.

4. To be confirmed. I was hoping they'd include the option. Any source to back this up?

There are plenty of things yet to be fixed from WP7 and I believe will be carried over through WP8.

1. Change of region. This can be done by going through customer service, but it is a hectic process. Why can't they just allow it as an option on our Windows Live profile? Heck, I'd even consider paying $10 for every change. Now I'm stuck to Australia, FFS.

2. Calendar. Windows Live calendar system tries too hard to be smart, ends up becoming an ass. They took regions / timezones into considerations, so some birthdays are out of sync. This only happens if you rely on Windows Live to handle birthdays. No impact on Facebook calendars.

3. Notification center. For the millionth time, Microsoft, toast is not enough. I want a summary of all notifications.

4. If your no. 4 is indeed confirmed, then this will be my issue with Microsoft / WP8. People always assume that they are "connected" to the WiFi. Take my mum for example, she's on a 100MB plan per month. I bought her a 710 some time ago. She played with her phone (connected to WiFi) then left it to idle, and it went to sleep. Then she woke it up again, tried to download Nokia Maps' maps. 1 map is over 100MB and immediately, she received an SMS from Maxis. How good an experience was it?

there are still a lot of factors that stops me

--doesn't have a centralized place for notification( i know live tile will have notification count on the tile, but what about    apps that u didnt pin, plus, it's better to see what's up in a centralized place)
--the 'Me' tile doesn't seem to send out notification upon receiving any updates inside
--background color, i just hope we can change it to our own preference
--the whatsapp of WP.. not sure they improved it or not, but it's a bad experience since last time
--it doesn't feel as 'fun' as other phones, what i mean is, less games/quality free titles compared to other platforms
--no shortcuts of any kind... let's say i wanna turn off my bluetooth, or change my wifi access point after connecting to a network already.. current uses will get what i mean

some might say it's all the small/unimportant things, but i do feel these should be taken care of, if an OS is trully polished, every OS has it's downside, I'm just stating WP's, I do not mean that other platforms are perfect, in case anyone here is offended
*
The titles are coming. Wait for it.

There are shortcuts. You can pin Bluetooth / WiFi to Home and access them easily.
