Most of malay are not qualified to enter UM due to the result not excellent, most of engineering student(electrical, mechanical, chemical, civil) um are 4.0 from matrix and STPM. UTM engineering very easy to get n very easy to score, they have their own book and all lecturer will refer to the book when preparing the exam questions, so that's why many students can score and rate of student repeated the subject very low compare to UM(5 years is normal), while in UM,the question cant be predictable and most of lecturers are foreigners/engineering consultants, UM doesn't have the reference book like what others universities does, and most of lecturers preparing the open question and not based on the lecture class, i can say even u bring the book to the exam, u cant answer the question because most of the question are very open  and u never seen the question before(u cant find in a book or lecturer notes), there are no tips from lecturer on exam, There are many 3.0 and above graduate students  from UTM, while in UM, if u can pass 3, meaning u are good student because most of student graduated below 3 especially student from matrix/asasi UM. UTM engineering still accept 3.0 from matrix/STPM(i believe most of them are matrix student) student while there is not such kind of clowns in engineering UM. One things good about um, the live is free, not like others university, now UM has many international students for undergraduate and the percentage of malay students in UM are not majority anymore, so u can see hot chicks wearing short skirt around university(only in UM for public U category) and the UM gate 24 hours open(only in UM for public U category) since its located in the kl area. Dont worry about the job if u are graduated from UM, I can say 100% got a job after final exam, while in UTM there are many jobless compared to UM and student english proficiency is low.( Most of the class conducted in Malay).

I don't doubt what you have to say about UM, but you have to state some source for your info regarding UTM. They are not reputable for nothing.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 — A World Bank publication has found that standards at Universiti Malaya have fallen and the institution has been kept at a disadvantage because of race-based admission quotas and political interference in university management.

In contrast, Singapore’s decision to prioritise research, keeping English as the medium of instruction and a merit-based admissions policy have all contributed to the success of the National University of Singapore’s success, according to “The Road to Academic Excellence,” which studies what contributes to a world-class research university.

Once again, I'm sorry but based on everything I've ever read so far (student testimonials and general opinions), everybody (except for some of UM's own students) agrees that UM's engineering faculty cannot match that of UTM's. UTM has always been a clear winner. But thank you for your perspective on things.

UM engineering undergraduate here.

Slightly misleading statement. For my course, there are about 60 students, roughly half of them are Malays. And in fact, all of them scored 4.0 (cut-off point for my course) in their pre-U exams, either Matriculation or UM Asasi. So, on the surface, their results are as 'excellent' as the other non-Bumis.

Of course, we all know that Matriculation exams are way easier than STPM and it doesn't take a genius to get 4.0. So after the first semester exams in UM, you'll find the faux 4.0 students failing their papers and struggling to keep up with classes. And from my observation, the only ones affected are the Malays (exam results drillz available on request).

So technically, they are 'qualified' based on pre-U results. But the problem is that we have a shitty pre-U system, and the results don't mean a thing.

There are good lecturers and bad lecturers in UM. But for my course, so far I've met more bad lecturers than good ones. Just how bad are they? They make me feel that I should address my high school teachers as Dr. instead of them. One of our lecturers from Indonesia couldn't even speak a proper sentence of English, and* he has been with the faculty for 10 years or so I've heard. How did he even pass his interview? doh.gif Seriously, it's really really bad.

QUOTE

Not true. Some less popular UM engineering courses will still accept students as low as the ~3.2 range

This I can agree on.

I think English proficiency (or lack of it) is a national problem and it's not just affecting UTM. There are plenty of students in UM with bad English as well.

Bro, u junior than me, i was graduated 5 years ago, there are many 4.0 matrix student during ur time because the exam now much more simpler, different from my time. Not so many 4.0 matrix student, so the malay percentage very low especially electrical and mechanical.s0 dont compare ur time and my time,- some department has many malay, but the course not consider as popular course - manufacturing, enviroment engineering, and so on - i guess our time is different, since like now many students can get 4.o easily from matrix..)

You graduated with a bachelor's degree 5 years ago? From UM? So during your university admission year, (pre-2005 from my calculations?) the Matriculation programme wasn't open to non-Bumis yet right?

Well in my defence, the sentence I was quoting was "UTM engineering still accept 3.0 from matrix/STPM(i believe most of them are matrix student) student while there is not such kind of clowns in engineering UM" and your (electrical, mech ...) part was in the first paragraph so I didn't think that was relevant. But if you insist, fine.
