Official SSD Discussion Thread

Introduction
QUOTE
A solid-state drive (SSD) (sometimes improperly referred to as a "solid-state disk" or "electronic disk") is a data storage device that uses integrated circuit assemblies as memory to store data persistently. SSD technology uses electronic interfaces compatible with traditional block input/output (I/O) hard disk drives. SSDs do not employ any moving mechanical components, which distinguishes them from traditional magnetic disks such as hard disk drives (HDDs) or floppy disks, which are electromechanical devices containing spinning disks and movable read/write heads. Compared with electromechanical disks, SSDs are typically less susceptible to physical shock, are silent, and have lower access time and latency, but are, at 2011 market prices, more expensive per unit of storage. The prices have continued to decline in 2012.

SSDs share the I/O interface technology developed for hard disk drives, thus permitting simple replacement for most applications.
As of 2010, most SSDs use NAND-based flash memory, which retains data without power. For applications requiring fast access, but not necessarily data persistence after power loss, SSDs may be constructed from random-access memory (RAM). Such devices may employ separate power sources, such as batteries, to maintain data after power loss.

Hybrid drives combine the features of SSDs and HDDs in the same unit, containing a large hard disk drive and an SSD cache to improve performance of frequently accessed data. These devices may offer near-SSD performance for many applications.

Going to buy a SSD this coming Saturday. Any recommended shop or brand? I dont want to get a SSD that has lots of problem.
*
AFAIK, Intel is pretty reliable and mature in firmware.

QUOTE(realone @ Aug 17 2012, 09:15 AM)
Anyone here can suggest me where i can get cheaper SSD (128 GB version)? Prefer Crucial M4 instead of Intel SSD 330 series.
*
You might want to search on garage sales for much more affordable deal before you head on to local store.

Intel’s TRIM Support for RAID Coming to X79 ‘Soon’
QUOTE
When Intel finally announced TRIM support for systems using RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 setups, users with multiple SSDs and Intel motherboards couldn’t have been happier.  Before this, TRIM was available for SSDs but only when single drives were used outside of a RAID environment.

The Rapid Storage Technology (RST) 11.2 driver update was rolled out to the public but the initial positive response was somewhat tempered when enthusiasts realized their X79 systems weren’t supported.  Only P67, Z68, Z77, H67, H77, Q67 and Q77 chipsets are certified, which tends to leave some Intel’s highest paying clients (enthusiasts and power users) out in the cold so to speak.

Current RSTe drivers specific to X79 do NOT support TRIM on RAID 0, but an updated RST driver version coming soon will add support for X79 based systems, including the TRIM on RAID 0 feature.  Note that on client 7-series chipsets (non X79), RST driver version 11.0 and beyond supports TRIM on RAID 0.  -Intel

For me warranty comes first. Which only Intel 520 offers 5 years warranty. Outside Malaysia, Vertex 4 comes with 5 years warranty as well, but sadly not Malaysia.

So far I'm very happy & satisfied with my Intel 520 180G. Everything loaded less than 3 seconds.
*
I thought ocz has 5 years warranty here for the SSD too. no?

QUOTE(yarusaru @ Aug 22 2012, 11:33 PM)
how abt M4? compared to 520 & others hmm.gif

You mean in terms of performance? Might wanna search some benchmark tho. wink.gif

Yes, the SSD will die within a month. BTW I don't see how this will affect the SSD.

I'm hoping you guys can answer my question. I've been looking at newegg pricing, 120gb SSDs like Intel 330, neutron, crucial m4 and samsung 830 all have retail price about 120usd but they mostly sell around 100usd now. Plus shipping to malaysia thats only about rm325 more or less, whereas local vendors are selling these, except the intel 330, around rm360-400. So would it be recommended to just ship in from u.s because it sounds like a very good deal? In fact as of right now the OCZ vertex 4 is going for only 99usd from the rrp of 139usd.

Also according to corsair's websites it offers 5 year warranty but the garage sale posts only offer 3 years for their neutrons (not the gtx), is that just because we're Malaysia? sad.gif
*
If you can wait for the stuff to arrive, you may go ahead. I'll be abit worry when it comes to RMA claim. About the warranty period, i thought all corsair SSD only have 3 year term, check out the link below.

Under tech specs first thing they say is 5 years. But yeah you guys are probably right about the RMA issue, iirc newegg malaysia told me some warranties are even voided if brought out of US. I have to clarify with them first
*
Might want to e-mail corsair and ask about it before you place your payment.
