re: commissions, follow missingNo's advice on exposing your stuff on art communities. The fanart community on deviantART especially is a really big market that you can tap into. That's where my initial freelance work comes from, and I still get most of my clients through dA.

Yep, get a good portfolio, and start taking small jobs, particularly in illustration if you are looking keep a steady stream of income through freelance work. Illustration is something that always generates money, if you know where to start off. Writers are almost always looking for art to visually bring their story to life, and the changeable nature of fiction often means that there's plenty of variety to challenge your skills.

What I did initially was do some pro bono work for writers of fanfiction that I really liked, by directly contacting them and offering to illustrate scenes and/or characters for free. This gives you access to their reader base, widening the audience that sees your work. Writers tend to have fellow writer friends; some of these friends may decide to approach you and officially commission you to create art for them Keep a professional, top-quality attitude, and word-of-mouth will do the work for you

Had finished my first commission in September 2010, so that would be a little over two and a half years now since I started accepting commissions.

(Geeze, my art then and my art now is so very different, and I used to colour with a mouse back then XD Time flies...)

Get what I mean? You only like lesbians because they are "sexy". That, my friend, is called OBJECTIFICATION. You like lesbians because they are sexy, because you find the idea of two hot women getting it on sexy. You are not looking and/or caring about at the social and cultural issues that are attached with being non-heteronormative.

Hating gay men =/= not wanting to know the details of how a gay men's sex life is like. The former is homophobia. The latter is just like how most people do not really want to see their own parents having sex; it's a personal space/privacy thing, which is legit.

Posting things like "EW GAY KILL IT WITH FIRE" and "BEAT HIS MOM KILL HIS DAD" (seriously?! do you even realise what you're saying here? You're condoning assault and murder) is NOT FUNNY. You think it's funny, but if you have to deal with a friend who was beaten up so badly that he is now BRAIN DEAD because some idiots hate his perceived sexual orientation, you may think differently.

Take a long hard look at what you are saying, buddy, and tell me if it's actually a fair thing to say.
