it is a system for a futsal turf. the sms application will function as a booking platform for those who are interested in playing at the turf. this sms application will be integrated with php programming. we have no knowledge or what so ever in the development of this sms application.

1. buy GSM modem and add in SIM card, and code from there
2. use a gateway, required payment, may cost like 10cent in USD per message, code is easier, they would provide code to interface with them, usually they sell you a set of like 100 messages, or prepaid model,
3. use existing phone as modem, code something to talk to the phone, similiar to option 1,

Do you need to follow everything your lecturer tells you? Tell him that SMS incurs too much cost and isn't feasible for a toy project like this. Offer to change it to email notifications. The end result is the same - customers are notified of events.

Unless of course his Uni is willing to pay and provide for the services and hardware required. A GSM modem can cost hundreds IIRC, so yeah.

I dabbled in such a project during internship before, although I didn't get to touch the SMS part of the system, it works like this:

Customer puts request in the web module, which is stored in a DB. SMS part of the system polls the DB regularly and sends out queued SMSes with a GSM modem with a prepaid sim card. Try to figure out the API for the GSM modem and it should be pretty straight forward.
