try using another usb port
or reinstall the usb drivers only, Google for Samsung usb phone drivers

CANNOT unless you use Parallels and that is also unreliable : 50/50 success rate. KIES has a aMAcOSX version that you can just dump it - in windows is already not good ; in Mac OSX is even worse
macOSX also cannot detect the drives of the phone ( unless it is in GB)
Best you still use Windows OS in Windows Notebook for roms flashing

In call log, select menu and you choose select only Missed calls and delete all if you wish

Full charge from near empty most is 3 hours+
Either battery is defective, usb cable defective or usb port in phone defective

you can use astro file manager - there is option to backup all 3rd part apps in apk form : menu/tools/application backup
