Many locals sing praise about our food (so faptastic). But isit that good? most never seen the outside world. Thai food is major success worldwide. Tom yam half the world know. Our food? bah kut teh barely international. Got a few malaysian restaurants in europe and US, never really took off and expand wildly. interest level quite low. Compare world class sushis

Why? our food generally of low quality produce and use salty, heavy sauce to compensate. Not surprising given our 3rd world status (thanks to BN icon_idea.gif)

Mee goreng? just some fried noodles
Asam laksa? Thai's tom yam more memorable
Roti canai? oily pancake..thats all...
bah kut teh? this one more interesting...but plenty of interseting china dishes that never gone international....bah kut teh meat is consider just so-so compare to top produce from France.

Just compare our produce even!
Durians...best sent to Singapore
Mangosteen...best sent to Japan
Seafood...selects sent to Hong Kong
Left rubbish for us local.....

When a simple burger like Kaw Kaw (by western standards) can become a huge fad, we know our food need serious improve! I say our standard has dropped way below 20 years ago! Pls no more tidak apa attitude and self praise!

QUOTE
Msia: Lots of salt, lots of sugar, lots of flavoring, lots of MSG = Tastes good
SG: Low salt, diet sugar, no flavoring, no colouring, NO MSG = tastes like shit
u like salt sugar and MSG? just dump them into mee and discard everything. oh wait thats char kuey teow! there...your kind of food.

Our gomen just dun care about the wellbeing of the rakyat....let banglas run our stalls...let rats dominate...poor cleaning practice...best stuff exported...list cant end!

3rd world food bcos the ppl poor, cant afford high quality materials and talented artists to make food. how many can afford 50 dollar artisan meals in zimbabwe? can use top fish and high quality meat?

I consider SG food superior. you must be one of the cheap-ass who stick to their hawker fares, which is really sucky. of course, i never consider our hawker food great either...just as sucky.

Go SG is to eat their top restaurants...daniel bulud, the hotel chiense restaurants. u go try and come back hanging your head in shame when u eat at our tai thong....

For me both also more or less the same. But singapore have more variety of foods in a single food court compared to Malaysia.

I'm eating what the majority eats, I don't eat those Oriental Mandarin daily for dinner... But I have to agree that it is more superior. Since all those good materials (bigger prawns, bigger oysters, better vegetables, fresh salmon, juicy prime cuts) comes to Singapore. It's just that because of NEA and HPB, they are forced to cook more healthily, thus showing them being "kiamsiap". You can see EVERY SGrean say that Malaysian food is nice, but I can still see a majority of Malaysians preferring the food from their own country including myself.

that's normal practice for import-export.

even in NZ, the best cherry handpicked to be exported to Japan and USA.
even the NZ local cannot buy them tongue.gif
but for pickers, we eat them like not tomorrow tongue.gif

depends which category of food u looking for. fine dining, of course msian cant fight in that area.

sushi is easy to make... that's why can go international.. plus it is healthy.

Its just mentalities, in this case of yours in particular, its truly a third world at best.

Everything of others is good. Ours is horrendously bad. How's roti canai is cockroach food, but vera's is not.

But then again, you did gave us a good laugh, especially with that sample.

Satay = stolen from China's Xinjiang province. If u tour Xinjiang market, u can see exact same thing - the only difference is they use bamboo thin sticks and no ketupat.

Rojak = stolen from surabaya traditional delicacy.

Hainan chicken rice = stolen from hainanese people in china.

Penang CKT = stolen from hakkanese food called Pan Tiao - u see that in china. Fried in same way, except they dont use siham. They use pork strips.

Hainan chicken rice = stolen from hainanese people in china.

Pls no more tidak apa attitude and self praise!
u like salt sugar and MSG? just dump them into mee and discard everything. oh wait thats char kuey teow! there...your kind of food.
*
The burger kaw kaw is famous because burger is our kind of food. We don't have a lot of people who want to open Malaysia food in other countries that's why we are not famous. What do you think about, keropok ikan terengganu, kari kepala ikan, ayam pedas, ayam masak kicap, budu, tempoyak, nasi kukus, nasi dagang, nasi kerabu, rendang, gulai kawah, nasi minyak(my favourite), ayam percik, martabak. How about all this food? Do you think it is all rubbish?

lol at the guy who says food in Malaysia is stolen. there's a difference between stealing and modifying which is what the Chinese ancestors in Malaysia did like adding Malaysian chili sambal to fry CKT etc.

damn.

delicious is subjective, if u think rm1000 food is always better than rm5 food just because of the more expensive price tag, you have something wrong in your mentality. to you, cheap food = crap. bullshit. u really think raw materials so expensive? go sabah for example, the fresh seafood there are very cheap
go to restaurant, prepare to pay rm300+ for a rm50 fish.

roti canai cockroach food? LOL. why are we arguing with a troll anyway. I doubt this guy actually has the money to eat luxurious food like he claim. probably a poorfag that have no chance to taste the so called luxurious food. btw, "luxurious" steak, lobster, pasta, all are above average at best. its well known that overpriced food=overrated shit.

LAKSA is becoming more and more prominent all over the world. i've seen international cuisine shows that refers to laksa as if it's a very common dish that the audience are expected to know. like for example, "this tastes almost like LAKSA, but runnier...".

now, TV show hosts dont use that sorta reference unless it's common, like PIZZA or BURGER.

Easy TS..In my hometown you can get Mee Hailam full of fishballs, fresh squid and prawns for only RM4..then there's Mee Rebus..Chicken Rice..Porridge for only RM2 per bowl..

The best food cost nothing for me though..My mom used to cook Laksa and so many dishes and it was FREE for me rclxms.gif

Gosh now feel hungry again...salivating for no reason thinking of all the cheap food (which I honestly enjoy more than the RM300+ dinner for 2 I had at a fine dining establishment last week). Exotic/Expensive food not always the best tasting smile.gif

TS mom never give him home-cooked meal la I think..maybe for his family home cooking is too bourgeois tongue.gif

how many michelin starred restaurants are there in malaysia? zero?

most malaysians, including myself, have close to zero exposure to what good food actually is.

even the shitty shitty shitty places that serve shitty shitty shitty food like pappa rich and old town are doing very good business and growing everyday. it just shows how poor us malaysians are at telling good food from bad.

Michelin Guide does not cover the whole world..how to give star if they don't even have their critics here in the first place? hmm.gif

In any case I don't think our eateries will lose in terms of taste but if Michelin critic comes sure lose in terms of SERVICE (which I think is non-existent in Malaysia) whistling.gif

u have the money to eat good foods u can go ahead, local foods does not need michelin rating coz every malaysians know their taste, no matter how much popular those restaurant like paparich or watever restaurant still they serve local foods

many of them go those cafe restaurant yet they still eat hawker stall food the next day, how much u can spend on those restaurant like papa rich or old town white coffee? even if u earn 3k a month, u will not even willing to eat at those restaurant every single day without fail?

those restaurant are getting more famous everyday becoz it was convenient for them to eat when when u are working in office, u have only 1 hour break for lunch, don't come and say that you willing to drive 1km just to eat at hawker stall restaurant? doh.gif

its not actually that expensive. in the uk for example, some pubs are michelin-starred. you can get lunch at ramsay's restaurant for under 100 quid (set lunch at claridge's 30 quid, in fact), but you need to enter a waiting list. it's the quality (as roughly defined by the totally subjective judgment of the judges) rather than the price.

having said that i still like malaysian food more. problem, op?

fair enough...some of us have been trained to like our food since young. that is understandable. read up about pavlov conditioning to learn more...

my point is, the rather cold reception for malaysian food elsewhere says a lot about our current cuisine. not enough creativity! how many new dishes coming out? every food court i go sells the same thing

anthony bourdain said penang laksa is a bloody magnificent dish, that americans would love it if its served there, and is a hearty dish. If u still wanna argue about his review then u must have had a better taste and standard than him, who has probably eaten a more expensive meal in a day than the entire meal u had in 1month. Heck he even had the chance to eat wagyu beef, foie gras, truffles, and caviar, so his review must be UNDISPUTED notworthy.gif

ermmm ts are u hardly have any chance to taste the foods beyond our country's border??? if yes i could understand the reason for ur statement then....i can only say our chefs got better talent in sos n spice mixing...any lapsap ingredient also can make it become eatable...
in some countries, i really having hard time to find at least consider "eatable" standard's food....with premium price summore.

someone's never been to singapore. ahahahahahahaa.

Malaysia mentality = development is bad. export is bad.

And no. we get the freshest mangosteens and durian. just learn WHERE to get it. Singapore, UK, they get the worst ever possible quality of food. why?
fruits will spoil within 2-3 days. u think they so stupid let their fruits spoil? Obviously they will freeze or add shyt into it. This is not a problem in Malaysia . the only thing is WHERE to find it.

some may said malaysia lacking world class rating restaurants...hello?? are u malaysian??? we r specialize in making junk become heaven, those idiots who never learned that skills therefore required superb original quality, hence needless great mixture of taste and spices, even basic cooking skill like steam already can make it become best.
Who to blame for not having such great quality raw materials?? why we need to import it and pay with premium price?? MALAYSIAN!! weak currency?? also because of we MALAYSIAN~~
moreover, we use to have alot superb quality raw materials such like river fishes, but over-hunting without proper planning, causing these rare perfect materials's population getting lower and lower, some even facing extinction....

btw, in the world of food art, there is no boundary at all...it creates culture but doesnt mean it belongs to them.

I agree what you had comment, most of the restaurant food in KL had drop a lot. Quality cannot maintain, and yet a lot of people never realize it or maybe a lot of people don't care.

the durian in singapore sold there are frozen, refridgerated, and thawed. This utterly destroys the taste of the durian. it is TOTALLY different from the durian u get from muar, where u camp below the trees and eat right after it falls.

when you export fruits, the quality deteorates like gilagila. thats why UK has horrible fruits. they cant produce shyt.

But this is from my experience anyways. cuz my family has a couple durian, mangosteen and rambutan plantation land. so we get the best. But even those hawkers who sell at pasar malam, if u can find good one's. the freshest durian.

i've been travelling the world all my life, but the best food is still in Malaysia.
in Australia, UK, our food such as roti canai and nasi lemak are very popular and sought for. students sometimes cook and sell it to others, and most of the patrons are Europeans themselves.

I don't know if you got a case of bad luck to encounter rotten food or something, but the food here is of good quality. maybe just the way the sellers handle the foodstuff.

interesting how a food thread can go back to BN

anyway to say malaysia's food is overrated, it tastes good because its made for malaysian tastebuds

in other nations they have their own things that are great, fruits in australia are wonderful, so is coffee. ice cream in italy is godlike, and so on.

sometimes Malaysians prefer it locally owned rather than commercialising too much, and with commercialisation comes a mundane uniformity of products and usually with monochrome comes gradual decline in quality.

I guess we like surprises we find in the different food haunts there is in and around the city, and even in the village; Its not just about making your tummy satisfied but the whole experience.

most malaysians, including myself, have close to zero exposure to what good food actually is.

even the shitty shitty shitty places that serve shitty shitty shitty food like pappa rich and  old town are doing very good business and growing everyday. it just shows how poor us malaysians are at telling good food from bad.

Haha..bru try eating in machelin star restaurant terus arrogant ka...haha..wat a funny man..Even the great Anthony Bourdain who has eat at a hundred of michelin star restaurant does not call malaysia food shitty..hahahahhahahahahaha...Btw why did someone like Anthony bourdain went to malaysia to eat crappy and shitty food like you said eventhough he has eat in a lot of times in machelin star....because you are arrogant shity prick who cant evaluate local food.

Tell that to the current generation of Malaysians who only want to work office type jobs and high pay. Where the youngsters do not want to carry on the family restaurant business and the like, so who else to do the job but other people who are not malaysians?

You ask any youngsters these days if most would work in restaurants as cooks/waiters and most will tell you NO! So, how is that the blame of other people when the generation does not want to work in such environment.

Think about that.

Its the ingredients really. Its the sub par ingredients used in order to maximize profits, Malaysian delicacies are a hit with my foreign colleagues and friends who actually have use nasi lemak and hokkien mee as exotic dishes for special days.

Its definitely not overrated as it does spice up their menus with local recipe specialty.

Our food is totally adulterated just because restaurant owner wants to capture the Malay market. Real food needs stock (from pork bones) and alcohol (esp french food) to taste good. Even our ice cream and chocalates taste bad because it is halal. Give me back the 70's when Food is really good without that halal thingy. Our Malay friends have become more Arab than the Arab itself. even our mineral water is halal, I have friends from MiddleEast (Arabs) who laugh at us. They say water is water, how can u halalnised water. just like the air you breathe. Later we are gonna have halal air which comes in bottled form

Agree with TS. After being in and out of the country I find myself having diffculty looking for good food back home. Even the so called super duper good food that everyone is raving about tasted ok and average. If tourists really think it is good instead of singing praises out of politeness, the demand from tourists would have caused a mushrooming of such restaurants overseas such as thai restaurants.

Later we are gonna have halal air which comes in bottled form

totally...the food in the past is much better. even the hawkers respect ingredient quality and put care into their craft. now just hire bangla while they shake leg and open branches maybe. just the day b4 i saw another branch of famous kampar duck noodle. what the hell is doing here in KL???

western food here in particular is shit level.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Halal, is in fact, GNU/Halal, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Halal. Halal is not a standard unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX

the usual trend is like this. Ah Wah open CKY shop...business very good. Ah Wah rich d wanna enjoy life so hires Burmese guy to fry CKY. Burmese guy has degree in Economics but no job in Myanmar so does wahtever job possible. Quality drop. We eat we complain. i have seen this happen in many famous restaurants/stalls.

Either foreigners start doin d cooking or they cant handle the crowd so quality suffers.

interesting...i wonder which laksa are the referring to? probably singapore version (kari laksa in KL)

they refer LAKSA as the general dish. something like pizza. we know italian pizza is different from american variation, but a pizza is a pizza.
