What you all opinion about this article, seem that Phd grad are too many produce every year and out numbered the available job.

QUOTE
55. There are too many PhDs.
The reason that there are so few jobs to be found in academe (see Reason 8) is not because there are too few colleges, universities, departments, or programs. If anything, there are too many. The problem is that the number of available jobs is vastly outnumbered by the number of people applying for them. There are simply too many PhDs produced every year for the higher education establishment to absorb them all, despite the absurd degree to which it has absorbed them into jobs that have nothing to do with traditional research and teaching. Today, universities hire doctors of philosophy to be in charge of their dormitories, alumni associations, and police departments.

Colleges benefit from this situation, because there are so many well-credentialed people desperate for teaching positions that they will work for very little money. This would not be such a problem if the world outside of academe had more use for people with PhDs (see Reason 29). The fact that it does not is why there are so many people with doctorates who now find themselves working in part-time temporary teaching positions with no benefits (see Reason 14).

Agreed, but for me, the worst thing is that a postdoc (who, of course, has succeeded in securing a job) earns even less than a plumber (and many other jobs that don't need much qualifications), and I'm talking about Western countries pioneering in the field of science and technology.

Confining myself to the academia, the name of the game is "publication". Some publish even without a Phd. Some with Phds fail to publish. The one who publishes wins, not the one with Phd.

A Phd only trains you to do publish. Whether you manage to publish depends on many other things besides the doctoral qualification.

true enough. in Malaysia there is a great shortage of phd holders therefore creating a power and demand for phd holders. it is highly valued. but the trend will soon change. just like 15 years ago, bachelor's degree still valuable, but now there is a flooding making the value drop. now degree is nothing, masters and phd still valuable.

The salary of fresh PhDs (usually as Asst. Prof.) in Malaysia:
University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus: RM6,500
Monash University (Malaysia): RM6,000
Taylor's University: RM5,500

[Figures are obtained from a 'Jobs & Career' thread: http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1997292]

Of course not all PhD holders can gain employment from these institutions but I believe it's quite a good deal if one were to be interested to go into the academia.

What i knew from the ipts in malaysia, curtin universiti at Sarawak offers the most considerable salary for master and phd holders (highest than those offer in west m'sia) and their salary grade scale can be retrieved from curtin website. In ipts, you can easily get your title as associate prof and senior lecturer as compared to ipta, bt there's not much difference in salary payment, what difference them is the time allocated for lecturing and researching.
