Confining myself to the academia, the name of the game is "publication". Some publish even without a Phd. Some with Phds fail to publish. The one who publishes wins, not the one with Phd.

A Phd only trains you to do publish. Whether you manage to publish depends on many other things besides the doctoral qualification.
