w00t!

After many days of contemplation whether or not to upgrade from my current MacBook Pro 15", ..... finally just placed my order for the MBP Retina Display. biggrin.gif

Ships in 3-4 weeks time. Can't wait! happy.gif

Weird that the status still shows 'Processing' even after I made the order since lunchtime today, and my credit card company has confirmed the transaction too.

Does anyone know any shops that already have cases for the MBP Retina? like sleeves (that really fit it) and also cases (such as Speck SeeThru)

They had to remove it to obtain the level of slimness similar to the MBA.
*
slimness is one thing - it's almost impossible to fit an ethernet port on the current thickness of the MBP Retina

the other main thing is weight. optical drives aren't light, and to keep the weight down to an amazing 2kg, Apple just had to remove it.

basically weight is the MAIN reason i ordered the MBP Retina to replace my 2011 MBP 15". smile.gif

Just received my MBP 13" 2012.

I thought it supposed to be around 25% slimmer?

Or is it only apply to retina macbook 15" ?
*
Actually most people would be confused as well since Apple named their Macbook Pro with Retina the 'next generation' Macbook Pro.

And thus many would think that when they buy ANY Macbook Pro 2012, it will be the 'next-gen' with 'next-gen' specs as well.

Dunno whether to applaud Apple's marketing on this or not. laugh.gif laugh.gif

LOL you people are so obsessed with it.

Well, not for me actually.

I'm just happy that I would be able to shave off a very-noticeable 0.5 kg of weight off by using the RMBP. It's kinda crazy that I can shave-off that amount of weight while still having a whopping upgrade in specs (retina, SSD, thinness, multi-display output) compared to my current MBP 15". biggrin.gif

any latest news on 13' macbook pro retina display
*
Won't be so soon. Perhaps they will make a 13" Air Retina Display first as the Air comes with standard higher-res than the MBP 13". brows.gif

QUOTE(fipoch @ Jul 23 2012, 09:25 AM)
That's what I thought. But rMBP is too big to be carried around. Plus adding another RM1.7k is costly! The Air's processor is too low for me. Is the integrated graphic card really that bad?
*
I've used my 2011 MBA 13" for photoshop before, and the speed is very acceptable. The new ultra-low voltage Core i5 processors are quite fast actually.

QUOTE(Victor3010 @ Jul 23 2012, 11:10 AM)
I came from a integrated graphics card windows computer and really found it to be under perform. But you might want to consider the 2kg is spread on a bigger area so it is somehow nicer to carry and bigger screen estate for design. If not you gotta wait for the next apple conference to see what they announce
*
The MBA 13"'s 1.3 KG weight is just perfect. My rMBP is actually quite taxing on my shoulders, although not as bad as my 2011 MBP 15". laugh.gif

QUOTE(fipoch @ Jul 23 2012, 11:45 AM)
From which integrated graphics card? Is the new Intel HD4000 superior than the old 15-inch (2010-2011) discrete cards? I'm not even going to consider the base 15-inch model since I might as well get the Retina. Still, I can't afford to add another thousand for it. Has anyone here used a 13-inch Macbook Pro for engineering?
*
Most engineering students can make do with even a sub-RM2k laptop. Your 13" MBP will do just fine. Only upgrade if you budget permits, but it is never a necessity. smile.gif

The way I see it right now  tongue.gif

MacBook Pro 13-inch : Might as well get an Air!
Macbook Pro 15-inch : Might as well get the Retina!
*
classic MBP gives you much more disk space, lower price, kensington lock slot, built-in disc drive, breathing-light for standby, external battery meter, ethernet port.

those are actually quite good features which are missing on the Air and rMBP.

so you don't have to worry, there's always a market for the classic MBP now. biggrin.gif

QUOTE(BRY7 @ Jul 23 2012, 12:04 PM)
those sub-RM2k laptop is better than 13" MBP, it has a dedicated graphics and maybe a quad core processor sometimes
*
Yup. And IIANM, most engineering software is windows based. But of course most students nowadays prefer to use Mac, which is good if they have the budget - but definitely not a must. And yes bigger screen would be good for engineering diagrams - so perhaps a rMBP or a 15" windows laptop if budget is limited.

For an engineering student. I'm not going to use it for the sole purpose as a working engineer. I have my desktop for that.
With a budget of RM4.5k, would you recommend the 13-inch i7 model? Or should I get 13-inch i5 and upgrade to 3rd party RAM and SSD).
*
IMHO, you should go for the MBA 13" Air since it is much lighter (good for travelling / commuting) and has a higher reso screen which is gives you more working space and best of all an SSD to really give you a speed boost. You really will not notice the performance difference of the low voltage processor which the Air has compared to the Pro. And since you already have a desktop, the Air would be a perfect complement to it.

*edit*
also, bear in mind that the Air's i5 CPU has Turbo Boost. So it can always Turbo over 2 Ghz for intensive apps. brows.gif

MBA lighter and bigger reso yes but I'm also considering SSD for MBP. I'm still not convinced that 2.9ghz is almost identical to 1.8ghz.
*
If speed is all you care about, then yes; perhaps that would be ideal. But you need to consider that the i7 is just a dual-core with low L3 cache size and also that it only has integrated graphics.

How true. laugh.gif

Seriously, if there is a budget limit; go for what gives you the best bang for buck and is most effective for your studies; and not trying to figure out ways on how to get a Mac while being thrifty - Macs aren't cheap!

If the budget has no limit, then have FUN shopping! lol. brows.gif

how to install win 7 via boot cam without dvd-room on rmbp ?

Burn the ISO of your windows 7 install disc to your thumb drive. Then run boot camp assistant and it will guide you accordingly. I just installed to my RMBP last night and it was super easy! biggrin.gif

I haven't owned a Mac, and I wish to have one. I already have a Windows desktop.
I heard 3D CAD softwares like Maya, Solidworks etc. ran on worse integrated graphics with a good enough result.
That being said, I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried running any of these softwares with a 13-inch Macbook before? I think 3D modelling applications don't use a lot of GPU power, it's mostly CPU.
*
Since you are constraint by your budget and still DESIRE to get a Mac, I think the MBP 13" will suit you well. No need to worry what you can or can't do if you are going to keep your desktop as the main workhorse.

P/S: I have a gaming rig now which has almost similar spec with your PC (your sig), and I still prefer to surf the web on my Mac. The experience is just different. biggrin.gif

I will buy.

Thinkpad W530 costs $3699 SGD (RM 9100) with following spec:

2.6 Ghz ivy bridge
8GB RAM
500GB Hitachi 7200rpm
Nvidia Quattro K2000m

The price reaches RM11k if you upgrade ram to 16gb and ssd. Thinkpad is a very reliable notebook. It is widely used in engineering fields. W700 costs RM17k when it was released 3 years ago. Those who purchased the notebook are from large enterprise. NASA crews are using IBM Thinkpad for years.

Don't argue with me as I use Thinkpad, Alienware, MBP, Latitude before. MBP is easy to use with the assistance of command key, apple script, multi-touch trackpad. It is vulnerable. My mbp broke down twice in 6 months.
*
Mind telling what was the cause of the 2 breakdowns of your MBP? and which MBP model was it? Thanks

MBP 13" 2011 model. I sold it two months ago.

I order a MBPRD. The parcel will reaches my house in these few days. Thinkpad and MBP are good machine. The build quality and ease of use are unbeatable
*
Yup. After using several MBP and MBA, I am thoroughly impressed with the built quality and also reliability (started since 2009 MBP era). Else, I would not even have the confidence to buy the RMBP, which I do now. They simply have earned my trust. notworthy.gif

As Apple's earlier habits, it should be out by 12 midnight sharp tonight right?

Can't wait to install it to my RMBP. Hopefully it will really fix the lag as mentioned by others. rclxm9.gif

receive my mbp last night. so far so good

I notice that remaining battery life status is not configurable, in other words, percentage and battery icon only. The remaining  time in hours and minutes format is removed from MBPRD

Does anyone here know to enable this?
*
Same here. My RMBP (when running Lion) doesn't show remaining battery life on the menu bar any more, but my previous 2011 MBP showed it.

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, it's the same as well, but would love to hear from other non-RMBP users.

Actually I seldom turn the feature on even with my 2011 MBP. I believe that it drains the battery somewhat since it is constantly calculating the current usage pattern with the remaining battery life to give the remaining usage time.

is it looked gay if a guy carries a 11" macbook air around? i knw the question sounds weird...lol. going to buy macbook air, i like portability..not buying a tablet coz i prefer a laptop that can perform basic computer work..

if you are really conscious about how people perceive you, then go for the MBA 13". the MBA 11" does look petite and more suitable for girls (no offence to users). laugh.gif
however, the MBA 11" is the best for portability rclxm9.gif
