authenticator is for login purpose. U can login ur game with or without authenticator. With authenticator is better security. For RMAH, if u using paypal, u will need sms authenticator. So when u wanna put something to let ppl bid, it will send a code to ur phone(doesn't matter smartphone or what, coz its sms), then u have to type the code in only u can put things in RMAH.
