Awesome. I was going to spend this weekend figuring out how to use my own router in place of the Thomson, but thank God someone beat me to it!
This should work with a WRT54GL, right?

QUOTE(peacelover1990 @ Jun 14 2012, 07:54 PM) Every router will work, no VLAN tagging function is needed in Router as we have removed the VLAN tagging from TM's Modem! Thanks for the information, i will figure out how to migrate VoIP and your information showed that VLAN 621 is for Internet, VLAN822 is for VoIP and VLAN821 is for MGMT (don't know what is that haha)~ I think MGMT should be for Management? Possibly related to the Maxis "we can hijack your router for Maxis Hotspot" clause lol. |

QUOTE(Swordylove @ Jun 14 2012, 08:41 PM) I'd like to know if I can use Apple Time Capsule as router? Wow, i just found out you can actually use that as a router. Also, I hope you'll find a way to connect the phone directly to TM's modem instead of to the Thomson router. And err... for landed installation. Why not just follow the steps here with your line and find out? |

Would not say it's lousy. It's perfectly usable apart from the fact it runs pretty hot, the management interface is slow and confusing, there's a lack of customizability, random hanging, no QoS options and a pretty bandwidth.
Sorry, I just miss my awesome Tomato-powered WRT54GL |

QUOTE(peacelover1990 @ Jun 16 2012, 12:59 AM) Googled around and checked this forum, seems the Huawei HG850a cannot be accessed via local IP at all. So I will have to buy a VLAN-tagging capable device.... Currently trying to get a Mikrotik switch (RB250A). I will try it out and see if it works. Will update if I successfully use a custom router setup. |

Ok, this is how I use my WRT54GL router with Maxis FTTH if you have Huawei HG850a GPON device. I assume it's mainly for landed properties.
Basically I followed all the instructions in this guide by rizanvp: http://unifi.athena.my/mikrotik_rb250gs.php The difference is on the VLAN tagging, which is done as below: ![]() (click for larger version) Maxis has a lot VLAN's used, but the main ones should be: 621 Home Fiber Internet 822 VOIP 823 IPTV (apparently) Possible to define more than those listed, but not sure how to go about it for now. Following that, the port assignment. This assumes that; Port 1 = Huawei HG850a Port 2 = Your router Port 3 = VOIP device Port 4 = IPTV. ![]() (click for larger version) After setting that, connect your own custom router as usual and enjoy ![]() Gotta love those delicious bandwidth graphs in Tomato! TODO: Find out how to use VoIP in this setup. Unfortunately, my router is not a SIP device, but I assume if you have a SIP-enabled device, you can tag VLAN 621 and 822 on the same port to allow SIP connection. QUOTE(Johannlo @ Jun 18 2012, 10:40 PM) anyone have guide for HG850A? this guide does not apply to that modem. cant seem to get in the modem configuration page even with static IP. and i cant find the manual book. Check my post for the guide to HG850a. You will need a VLAN-tagging capable switch/router. |

Here. Is it that hard to go thru ONE page of replies?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Added on June 20, 2012, 4:14 pm QUOTE(Johannlo @ Jun 19 2012, 07:44 PM) I believe this is the guide? and if so, wow. i don't understand a thing. (big time network noob here) well, i just want an additional router to utilize the 300N network infrastructure in my house. so yeah. i'm not planning to migrate anything (VoIP, PPPoE etc.) to my new router. And is VLAN capable router compulsory if i were to connect my router to the thomson and then relay the signals to my wireless device? Actually now that I reread your post, doesn't sound like my guide is what you want.*i'm doing alot of bluray video streaming across devices, wireless file transfers, remote desktop and so on. that's why 300N is a must for me but this thomson shit is giving me trouble. If you want to use your 300N wireless, set that router to DHCP. Then plug your router to the Thomson. this should turn it in to a wireless AP. Then configure your 300N wireless router settings. Configure the wireless on the Thomson to disable it of you don't plan on having so many WiFi network at home as well. This post has been edited by kurogane: Jun 20 2012, 04:14 PM |

QUOTE(Swordylove @ Jun 20 2012, 07:55 PM) I hope you guys will find out very soon on how to connect phone to TM modem without Thomson router. All these bad feedbacks about Thomson router make me nervous. I need the phone and I don't want to have to use 2 routers :S I don't think you can do it with the Huawei HG850a since there is no admin access to it. |

QUOTE(toh2020 @ Jun 22 2012, 10:18 AM) if i can remember the recent installation & setup of my HG850a. tm tech configures it via notebook. the new equiptment was preconfigure i believe so. because he shows me the asset was new. but the box was opened before. Good luck figuring it out. If you can find out please do share. I could not find anything in this forum apart from the info this model is firewall blocked from accessing the firmware using common methods. I really do want to use my own router AND the VoIP at the same time.so when he goes to gui. he logs in using ***admin. there are few words before i can't remember. as for password is all fully numerics. which is to say they changed it before sending onsite. but i am not sure if the username & password posted on web forums will work. looking back, seem like a vlan tagging switch was needed to access the gui. interestingly noted. the steps are very straight forward. except that during configuration by tm tech he does not need it. just plug direct to notebook. i mean lan to lan port. all i want is to login to hg850a. the rest i know what to do. any findings will be shared. Well, I will be trying out a few more things this weekend. Got an idea now after researching thru some forums but nothing guaranteed yet. |

Tried again yesterday to enable VoIP with custom router using the RB250GS switch. I managed to get the Thomson to connect to Maxis' VoIP server but it seems the real traffic is carried across the PPPoE interface so I can't actually call or receive...
Looks like it's either fall back to the Thomson or buy a VoIP capable router now... |

QUOTE(88sales88 @ Jun 24 2012, 09:15 PM) Did you managed to get a SIP IP from the VOIP server ? Did you configure a DHCP client to get the IP from the VOIP DHCP svr ? From my ethergateway port I can't seem to ping the VOIP DHCP but could do so via Thomson. I set the switch to tag packets coming out of the Thomson to 821 and finally can connect the SIP IP 10.34.xx when the Thomson turns on. So the phone 1&2 lights up. but then i plug my phone into the jack, both also not working. No dial tone, can't call out or call in... You said that it seems real traffic is carried across PPPoE but if that is true, the VOIP phone would not be working until PPPoE connection is established. However, I noticed typically the phone line is working even before internet is on the Thomson. Do you observe the same ? Try rebooting your thomson, you will see the phone line LED light up before the Internet one does. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? |
