QUOTE(singaporestreet @ Jun 4 2012, 10:34 PM) guys i'm confuse. live in spore or in jb. in jb: commute - 2 hours house - cheap in spore commute - 30mins house - expensive what to do??? Very simple. How valuable is your time? Which one would you rather have? S$1000 in your pocket each month (more or less, that's what you save by living in JB) OR an extra 2-3 hours each working day to do whatever you want?

QUOTE(singaporestreet @ Jun 4 2012, 11:17 PM) if you guys? which one you choose? For me, definitely live in Sg. S$1K or so per month, more or less, won't make much difference to my quality of life. If I didn't spend it on rental and taxis in Sg, I would spend it on pimping my car or buying useless IKEA furniture in JB. An additional 2 hours a day however, makes a huge difference.

QUOTE(Jet23sky @ Jun 5 2012, 08:57 AM) By the way, if I need to call back Malaysia frequently, the Starhub $38 postpaid plan is suitable for me right? It mentioned that by just topping up another $5, I can call back to Malaysia for free, which is IDD 018 if memory serves me right. It's not free lah. The IDD portion of the call is free, but you still pay for the local call portion. And that local call portion is not offset against your local free minutes.

QUOTE(yhoong12 @ Jun 6 2012, 10:58 AM) btw, the 2GB data plan is only for singtel or all telco?mine still have 5 month left, when is the earliest i can recontract?? The FAQ from the link I posted says that if you don't re-contract after your current contract ends... the T&C of your current contract will continue indefinitely until you re-contract or terminate. So that's what I'll do when I my contract ends. I'll simply continue and just carry on.

QUOTE(sapapa @ Jun 6 2012, 03:53 PM) Anyone working in NCS as computer engineer? I heard its a government company. How's the salary? Working hours? Advantageous? Pros and cons? NCS? Be careful... even the Biz Development Director cannot avoid having sex 7 times with a client to get business. Imagine what their junior engineers will be forced to do.

QUOTE(Mackiddo @ Jun 6 2012, 10:26 PM) If you do not re-contract, you'll lost the opportunity to get a subsidized mobile phone. Yes, there is that. Have to do the math lor. See whether the extra charge of $5.35 per GB (depending on your use) is more or less than the $400-500 handset subsidy. But what has definitely disappeared is the current deal of getting 12GB for the lowest plan and still getting the handset subsidy.

Are a lot of you guys from KL, and living in your parent's house before coming to SG?
I notice most of you say that rental in SG is expensive. It's expensive in KL also.
I rent a HDB for the same rental I paid for a terrace house in PJ. In that sense, I don't see any change in rental expense at all.

QUOTE(LiangZhuge @ Jun 11 2012, 02:06 PM) I beg to differ. Normally you can get a whole house / apartment in KL (dollar to dollar comparison / not using exchange) and then later sublet the rooms if you want and sometimes it might cover even for your own room for free. Try this in SG if you can Also I haven't heard a normal room in KL/ PJ going for RM 500++ rent (not those service apartment types, etc). This just means it's easier to sublet. Not that rental is cheaper. And if you have a family ie. you need an entire unit (whether flat in SG, or house in KL), subletting is not an option. For people like me who value privacy greatly, subletting is also not an option. KL works for people who don't mind locking their bedrooms, I guess. Me... I had enough of living with strangers since my college days.

QUOTE(LiangZhuge @ Jun 11 2012, 02:18 PM) ^ true, but the comparison was stating that rent was expensive due to most forumers makan free at home without paying rent Actually my comparison was that rent is the same. My assertion was that many forumers FEEL rent is expensive because they suddenly have to actually pay rent instead of living at home.

QUOTE(LiangZhuge @ Jun 11 2012, 02:42 PM) I see, tersalah baca previosuly Personally I feel is a bit higher as the apartment where I was staying, the rental was going for RM 750+. The cheapest I found in SG going for $1800 (2+1) kosong HDB. Then land is a premium here. My thinking is that you need to compare apples for apples... ie. compare the std of housing, not the type of housing or amount of land. A HDB flat is the standard unit of mass housing, just like how a terrace house is in Malaysia. I was in PJ for 6 years and paid from RM1300-1800 rental for a double story terrace house. I pay about the same now for a HDB flat. This post has been edited by seantang: Jun 11 2012, 04:57 PM

QUOTE(+ @ Jun 12 2012, 12:45 PM) is it better to apply a CC there even if you already had 1 locally? shouldn't the charges be more or less the same? Where exactly is "there" and where is "locally"? QUOTE(deodorant @ Jun 12 2012, 04:58 PM) Are you even in the correct thread? this thread is about "working in singapore," i.e. "locally" would mean " in Singapore." True that. QUOTE(deodorant @ Jun 12 2012, 04:58 PM) If you are saying you are already working in Singapore and wondering if there are any downsides to using your Malaysian credit cards here, the FX rate/spread you get is pretty sh*tty. Plus you have to pay the credit card tax for Malaysian cards. Also there are almost no real cross-border card promotions or benefits. I have a couple of credit cards in SG and I closed all my cards in MY. One of my SG cards has effectively 3% cash rebate on any spending, so that ngam-ngam pays for the forex spread when I use it in MY. But I normally use cash in MY now.

QUOTE(Mackiddo @ Jun 12 2012, 05:46 PM) Actually there is coz the retailers wouldn't know how to differenciate between a My or SG cc for issuer like Citibank, Standard Chartered & HSBC. And the discount/offer still applies. A friend of mine is doing that, especially on 1 for 1 buffet promo at 5 star hotel. Those are usually jalan-jalan cari makan type promotions which are "verified" by sight... actually it's not even a joint promotion with the card issuer. I usually use my card for those structured promotions like POSB-Carrefour/Watsons etc, UOB/Maybank-BestDenki/Court instalment plans etc... those you only get when they stick your card into the card reader.

QUOTE(yhoong12 @ Jun 13 2012, 10:26 AM) I only think that we, as foreigner alway kena press one, never think of can get higher than expected...so nice leh if all company like tat As Mackiddo said... pay structure. For the global MNCs I've experienced, if you are hired into a certain job level, you get paid the salary for that job level - even if you stated a lower expected salary. The reason is that you will find sooner or later from your colleagues if you're being paid equitably for your job level. And sometimes, I come across some candidates who are simply 'unaware' of what they are worth (in terms of the job level/salary expected, given the responsibilities of the role). If they have a strong profile, I don't mind giving them a very pleasant surprise. I don't want them to get pissed off after they find out that their peers gets paid more than them. I think this builds a lot of trust and goodwill.

If you need to catch a flight at 7pm, plan to get there by 5 - 5:30. That means you'll need to be on road by 4:30 - 5 if you take a cab. If you take a bus, even earlier depending on the bus route you choose. From Suntec, Friday evening... I would consider catching a cab at a taxi stand at anytime after 4pm to be a bit risky. Normally I would call to book a taxi or use a limousine service.
If you take the train, you'll need to find your way to City Hall MRT. It's probably the most reliable way to get there. But sucks if you don't enjoy long train rides.
