Hi all, this is my first post in lowyat forum. smile.gif

Recently, I found that my gf behave differently sometime, especially when she is in depression (feeling sad, negative thinking).
After some research on the Internet, I suspect my gf got Dissociative identity disorder which might caused by something that happened in the past.

When she's tired and sleep for 1~2min, her second personality will pop out. When she woke up (means the 2nd personality slept), she can't remember what she did and just know she is woke up from her sleep.

So, do anyone have the same problem or it happened to your friends and family? I'm in doubt whether I should tell her about this, because she don't know anything about the 2nd personality, but the 2nd personality does. unsure.gif

The best thing is you tell her when she's calm and make sure you guys didn't fight. And you can't diagnosed a person. So, you should bring her to see psychiatrist for inspection. Mental illness doesn't mean crazy but you should bring her to seek treatment. Be matured and discussed everything nicely. What I afraid is mental status is a sensitive issue. Telling her the truth might worsen her because she can get depress thinking that you will leave her because she was sick. Find a good time and environment. Maybe after take walk at beach and while you both happy. Psychiatric is a complicated subject. It might be a bipolar disorder too...

Agree. Find a right time, tell her that she might have a problem but don't assume and say that she is. Tell her you love her and do not want this problem to affect the relationship. Tell her for the both of you that you wish that she could visit a psychiatrist to clear things up alittle, it's okay and you will support her and love her no matter what. Easier for her to take it, seek help and solves the problem.

I had a talk with her last night, she admit that she knew her second personality, just scare I'd leave her so never tell me. She said the 2nd personality is nice, help her to handle all the stress stuffs.

Now I am in doubt again, should I take her to psychiatrist? Or leave her because she seems fine actually.

I am not really into psychiatric, but professionally - your gf need to undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Calm her by explaining that this is not like to send her to mental institute or something she saw on the movie, this is just to identify the root of the problem so that both of you can fix it together smile.gif

Consulting psychologist Paul Jambunathan once advised to take a video recorder to record such incidents.

Record the incident and let her view it. Then both of you will understand the seriousness of this thing.

You and your gf should consult an expert on this.

I just going to suggest this. However for TS, is your girl 2nd personality disturbing your relationship? How is the 2nd her if compare to the true her? If you think it's disturbing you, then you can consult psychiatrist. Maybe she will go for observation, and might given drugs to control the brain activity. Or maybe it's like a childish behavior. Psychiatric is a world where there is nothing true or false. I suggest, tackle her main problem. Ask about here stress, pamper her, give more attention and observe her. If still no changes, then it must have been psychological problem. And monitor when will the 2nd personality come out? During stress only, happy or even during sleep. Most of the case I seen is when the patient realize they are ill, they won't hesitate to seek treatment, but WITH SUPPORT. Without support, it's seem you just want to fix her for your own good, or she's not the same person to you like before.

Not really affecting our relationship, I just got shock at the first place (unexpected). The 2nd of her looks no different to others, but she will only shows herself when with me. It doesn't happen all the time, only when she's in stress + sleep. I think I would just observe her at the moment, because she told me that the 2nd personality has existed for 9 years.

9 years? I guess it's really a mental illness. No offense dude but mental illness I meant is not that crazy type. You can observed her and advice her. And girl do need more attention. It would not be a problem unless she have a suicide attention or try to harm you. But for the best of you and her, seek for psychiatrist consultation for confirmation. She's a lucky girl to have you by her side. Support her kay. Not all guy like you... I also have same situation with you, but not it's not that frequent. Only on super stress situation. They really need us dude... Be a man, and stand for them Therapeutic medication can't be compare to therapeutic support form a guy like us...

First of all, don't use the Internet for learning lay psychiatry.

Even trained psychiatrists have difficulty in teasing out personality disorders (takes a long, long time of interviews and observations ... and results in thick manila files).

As anything, consult a psychiatrist, and consider it this way, going to a psychiatrist is not to help only the patient, BUT EVERYONE, because in psychiatry; family, friends and every human dynamic is important to management.

Some psychologist do use hypnosis as a form of treatment. Usually to make sure that they get the whole story of what happening so that they have a solid history of the patient.

Dissociative identity disorder affects women on a ten to one scale compared
to men, is linked to PTSD which in turn has a root cause in childhood abuse,
particularly sexual.

"Violent child abuse, especially sexual abuse, is the most common antecedent
of multiple personality disorder".

Hypnosis is one effective mode of treatment.

Drugs used are the atypical neuroleptics - aripiprazole, olanzapine, venlafaxine,
risperidone, ziprasidone, and they second/third generation anticonvulsants,
levetiracetam and lamotrigine.

I believe levetiracetam would be the safest since it is a nootropic related to
the other racetams.
