Kaysa, regarding your dyeing adventure, in order to achieve a more safe heating environment, i suggest you double boil it instead of boiling it directly. Reason why is that while the water might be 60C temp, the side walls of the pot which is conducting the full heat will be much hotter. Double boiling will solve this problem.
Btw double boiling, if you dont know, is basically using the heat from a boiling water's steam to heat the inner pot. It is still safe to continously it though, to prevent touching the walls for too long tongue.gif.

Also, I'm looking for engraved white PBTs too. Want to tumpang a purchase from Taobao together? =D. I actually just need everything except the tenkey, F row, arrow cluster and insert/delete cluster tongue.gif

QUOTE(epiguru @ May 25 2012, 10:49 PM)
I think kaysa raised the issue of double boiling before. I personally think that even 100 degrees Celsius (boiling temperature of water) is too high for contact with any plastic. Maybe double boiling will reduce the risk because the maximum temperature of the walls will be 100 C, which means that it will take longer to warp if there is contact between the keycaps and the walls of the pot (vs say, 200 C). Avoiding contact with the pot (by stirring) and controlling the temperature of the water is the safest way to go IMHO.
*
Thats true, it doesnt eliminate the risk it only reduce it. But if just relying on stirring the pot in the direct heating method, a slight lapse of concentration would mean some parts will touch the wall longer, thus causing that part to warp. Margin for error is very low.
Another way i guess is a variation of the double boil method. Use a big pot to heat water, and submerge another pot containing water into the 1st pot's water. Heat the water enough for it not to boil (to achieve about 60C), and place the keycaps into the 2nd pot.

My workplace has a chamber that can heat the atmosphere to 60C. It'll be easy to use that chamber to do keycap dyeing tongue.gif

I received my alu POKER case from Treble318. It really makes it a lot more sturdy.
Cherry stabilizers also feel much better now. Less wobble.

Guys you know anywhere I can test out Brown or Blue switch keyboards?
The gf tried my Poker red, and would want to get one too, but she'd like to try all the other keys before deciding.

Preferably a tenkey or a full keyboard, rather than Kaiser's travelling numpad =D. Thanks! =D

Are PBTs more lasting than doubleshots?
So tempted by the red alert GB, but being ABS makes me 2nd think sad.gif

PBT will shine, but Doubleshot shines faster.

By the way, in case nobody reads that post
That means, DS will be more expensive next time round.

But is the super high contrast of the DS worth the shininess of the ABS?
Which do you prefer?

Haven't used one before so I cant imagine it sad.gif

Btw, I just ordered a Poker alu plate. Not sure whether it'll feel nice or not, but I did grow on to the slight flex of the Poker's PCB. Soften the impact of bottoming out tongue.gif.

Anyway the gf already tried Blues and as expected, she liked it more than the reds for typing, but due to the sound, she would like to give the browns a go first.
Any bets here on which she would prefer in the end? Blue, Red or Brown? tongue.gif. Black is out she tried it and disliked the harder springs.

LoL, buy this and buy that huh? and then at the end, you will find that the price you paid are worth another grade of keyboard,
you got yourself a poker? how much you paid for it? 300? the Alu plate? 100? then keycaps? 100? plus all the shipments handeling fees,
total of 500 spent? 500 can go for a 2nd hand HHKB Pro2 already.

That's what happen to me.  tongue.gif
*
Haha well you cant really compare that way because alot of the extra cost is to accessorise or modify the look and feel of the stock KB.
The HHKB Pro2, while I like it (more than the Topres), would mean i will need to spend even more on top of that to get the look and feel i want tongue.gif.
I'd do just that if i weren't so poor sad.gif.

In fact, a Filco Red would be my fav option, but to deck that out with bells and whistles, it'll cost almost RM600-700.
But the Poker isnt that bad. A plus is its portability, means I get to lug it around to show off and convert other membrane keyboard users, but I still desire a solid Filco Red as my non travelling keyboard tongue.gif.

Btw, the alu plate is not the case, but the stiffening plate to mount on the KB. Cost just USD11 over at GH now.

QUOTE(kaiserreich @ Jun 1 2012, 09:49 AM)
My modded poker probably cost more than that.

I don't doubt you considering the amount of mod options available on GH tongue.gif

i has been waiting to book the PBT WHITE from ducky but always being told "no stock"
but recently they have planned to manufacture PBT WHITE in laser etached or engraved. Hope this time come true
*
According to ripster, it is from the same mold as the KBC PBT ones available from Taobao.
But I prefer Ducky's packaging.

Do you have any info on price for the White Engraved (without infill), as well as whether there are 87pcs type?

You should direct your inquiries to the plastic factories.
Looking at least few hundred K since they won't do small volume anyway.

QUOTE(storm88 @ Jun 14 2012, 10:42 PM)
Well, mold engraving is not REALLY NOT cheap...
However i do have a CNC machine which means i can do the CNC milling myself, but the thing is, the metal used for engraving is $$$...
*
Actually.. it isnt that expensive.
The mold itself is just a few K, perhaps around RM5-8k.
The injection machine rental, depends on the quantity. The fewer quantity the more expensive it becomes. But for large quantities (lets say 100k sets) might cost u less than RM5 per set after factoring in the initial cost of the mold? (im guess guesstimating)
The secondary process to make the letters cost depends on the type of lettering. Pad printing of course is cheap. But not sure for laser engraving though.

So yeah, it is quite cheap tongue.gif

Signature plastics is the only manufacturer where you can order custom key apps from. There has been new start ups but so far, just sp. You are over thinking it.
*
The market is just too small for most suppliers to care. Signature plastics charge a arm and leg for what essentially is just bits of plastic. Something like Crocs. The cost price is so damn cheap because its injection molded, but they are sold at such high prices.

QUOTE(storm88 @ Jun 15 2012, 08:41 AM)
in fact, say for top and bottom mold set engrave for 108 Keysets, it costs below RM1k. But the CNC milling fees isnt cheap, where the most % in a single charge went to.

Well, now i wont ask the factory to quote me how the charges go. I need to get the wristrest ready first hand biggrin.gif
*
Yup just the insert to make the mold itself is very cheap, but the entire mold will cost upwards of Rm2-3k.
I work with injection molding, and i know both mold and injection suppliers, so yeah, I know these stuff arent that expensive.

I kinda prefer the HHKB Pro2 button feel over the 10th anniversary Topre feel. The 10th anniversary felt like a VERY refined membrane switch. The high quality feel is there, but the general feel still reminds me of a membrane. Like membrane on steroids tongue.gif.
But the HHKB Pro2, and some other Topre keyboards felt different. Prefer those tongue.gif.

I'd love a HHKB Pro2, but with its current layout, I dont think I'll ever commit. Enjoying my Poker now, but still cant get used to its 2nd layer layout =.=.

He meant that even he hasnt used both a Cherry MX and a Topre switch before, he wants to straight go for a HHKB Pro2 because he feels that there is too many Cherry users around (he wants exclusitivity) tongue.gif

I used to have a buckling spring kb around the house bout 10-12 years ago. used to play 'business' pretend game (kb as cash register), and i still can remember vaguely how it feels. Then i threw it away cry.gif. If i only knew what it was i would've kept it sad.gif.

How much does model M cost nowadays?
