guys, i found it weird that bread contains less calories than oatmeal. the oatmeal that i take contains about 367 caloris in 100g while wholegrain bread 216kcal only. If like that its better to eat bread to lose some weight. But most bodybuilding video shows they are eating oat. anyone know what is the explaination behind this
*
What oats is that? I have a pack of Captain Oats with me and plain oats is about 73kcal for 100gm.

Hehe actually i'm not overweight, my height is 1.64m and i weigh 57kg. If we're talking BMI, i'm still in the healthy category as my BMI is about 21.2. The thing is i wanna lose fat/flab especially around the tummy area. I was told that nutrition is more important than exercising. Is this true?
*
Equally important smile.gif but food goes into your body so I'd say it's vital. Just so you know, spot reduction is a myth. When you lose, it's overall body and not certain specific area. Even when you do more crunch/ abs exercise, they don't help in 'shrinking' your tummy area laugh.gif

also the quaker oat contains more percentage of fat than the bread im eating. i tot u need alot of oil to make bread biggrin.gif

It depends on the bread you're taking smile.gif some can be made with very little fat (butter/ margerin/ oil).

hmm.gif I'd say that Oats contain good fat? It's high in Beta Glucan which can lower cholesterol.

And find out what fats they use. I'd avoid vegetable oils with the exception of higher smoking point oils such as palm oil, peanut oil, etc. Margerine is definitely a no go. Butter is good as well.
*
Wait, you mean... butter is better than margerin? I thought both were equally bad hmm.gif

I wonder what Adventis 7 grain bread uses? sweet_pez
*
According to Adventist:

7-grains Sprouted Bread

The 7-grains sprouted bread contains sprouted millets, sprouted corn, sprouted oats, sprouted rye, sprouted soy, sprouted lentil, honey, molasses and corn oil. (Flour Free, Bromide Free, No Artificial Flavour, Egg Free, Shortening Free)

3-seeds Sprouted Bread

The ingredients in the 3-seeds sprouted bread are sprouted wheat, flaxseed, sesame seed, sunflower seed, honey, molasses and corn oil. (Flour Free, Bromide Free, No Artificial Flavour, Egg Free, Shortening Free)

More on their website : http://www.adventistbakery.com/products.asp

Adventist is actually a hospital in Penang if I'm not mistaken. They're highly trusted in Penang and the locals love their variety of healthier bread. Every time go Penang for work it's a rush and short trip, have yet to get a chance to drop by and have a look at their bakery though.

20 mins is fine, just up the intensity. Google HIIT for cardio, or to make things even easier just do weights.

And for the diet just keep it simple.

Let's say on one plate, assuming you're accustomed to the Asian diet:

50% goes to mixed vegetables ideally steamed or lightly stir-fried, 40% to a mix of eggs and/or other meats which ain't deep fried, and 10% to rice.

This should let you see some changes soon enough.

And yes.. fruits you can avoid.. due to the sugar content. Probably do it only once or twice a week, a small bowl of mixed fruits.
*
For me, no way I can live without fruits ohmy.gif I just have to take them everyday. Be it an apple, orange, some papaya or any other fruits for that matter. Although it has sugar (fructose), fruits are also rich in Vitamins and fiber.

I think it's no harm to take an apple or a fruit/ a slice every 2 days or so.

Where I was coming from was that mixed vegetables would be required too, providing necessary vitamins without the sugar. And fruits would probably come in to alleviate the deficiencies as tropical fruits are amazing in their nutritional content, but considering the sugar level probably 2/7 days in a week would be good enough, limiting to no more than 100g of fructose each time. If consumed daily then limit to less than 50g fructose .
*
Unfortunately I'm not a vege fan sweat.gif I try to compensate some of it with fruits (but of course, vege is healthier)

QUOTE(kurtkob78 @ Jun 7 2013, 11:14 AM)
if you are not competing in fitness model or bodybuilding, then its ok to take some fruit. but if you want to get to single digit bodyfat, then you must limit your fruit a bit.
*
icon_rolleyes.gif life is not-a-life without fruits. I don't mind going a little slower in my diet with fruits.

Green tea? It's so little that it's negligible. Doesn't help much.

Fat burner is more effective but wouldn't recommend.

why not recommend ?
*
1. It has some side effects on certain people such as headache, heart palpitation, insomnia, restlessness etc.
2. This is said by another forumer, not sure how true: Prolonged effect of taking fat burners may result in liver damage especially if you don't drink enough water
3. When you stop taking it, you'll feel weak.
4. Expensive - why waste the money?

If you insist on taking, no one can stop you.

fat burner contain cafein right? so can we replace it with coffee?
*
How coffee can you down in a day? Haha. You can drink coffee to give you the energy and boost for your workout but not so much for burning fat. Again, it's because the amount it can 'burn' is not a lot. You're better off doing a 15-min workout than to rely on the coffee to burn that fat for you.

I'm not saying that I have experience, still in learning process. but you cant spot to burn fat at certain area for example abs even u do 1000 crunches. that's what my understanding
*
Crunches strengthen your ab. If you want 6 pack, crunches is necessary.

Okay, explanation:

It may not guarantee you 6 packs, but it will certainly help.

so I'm 170cm, and averagely weight around 62-63kg..but ever since I started working (typical 9am-6pm office/desk-job), weight 65kg di =="

Really wanna cut down the 2-3kilos. Not looking to bodybuild or anything, just to reduce the tummy XD

I rarely eat rice now, just the veges & meat. Weight never increase, but never go down either .. any suggestions?

You have a sedentary lifestyle so you need less calories to maintain. Start exercising 3-4 times a week, 30-60min each time and you'll see some result soon. Jogging, rope skipping, functional training etc would do just fine.

And no doubt, food intake is important. Healthier option is breast meat - baked, steamed, grilled, pan seared, stir fry, broiled etc rather than fried. Egg is another good source of protein other than chicken breast.

YES!! I have the urge to do something after work hours but I have not got a clue what to do!

I tried picking up jogging (either in the morning or evening) during my break before starting work, which lasted a good one week - everyday go "jog"..haha. The problem is, whenever I go "jog/run", it only lasts for a short while and I would just end-up brisk-walking for a few more rounds before calling it a day.
*
If that's the case maybe you'll want to do 20min of jogging, then 30min of functional training - eg. squats, lunges, plank, leg raise, crunches, push up, tricep push up and many others. Check out some videos on Youtube that you can do/ learn from but make sure you're doing it right.

Enrolling in gym would be beneficial because you can use their weights and other equipments. If it doesn't fit your budget to invest in gym membership, look for one that offers pay per entry (walk in). It's cheaper and you can do a variety of training + be much motivated to workout in gym wink.gif

It depends on your fitness goal - meaning, what do you want to achieve by working out?

How big is your 'full plate'? What sort of veggie are you talking about? What other food do you take besides your vege?

Hey, guys! I've been hitting the gym for like 3 weeks already (3 or 4 times a week), getting sore muscles here and there. But since school reopens now, I found out that getting sore is not a good thing for me. I'm having my SPM trial now, so..
Anyway, I just wanna lose about 4-7KG before November. Should I hit the gym more often or is there anyway to cure the soreness faster? hmm.gif
And please review my diet plan, I feel that there's something wrong with it since I'm stuck on 52KG for like a week already. I'm kinda worried about that.

Breakfast:
1) Nestle fitness cereal + a little raisin + Marigold HL chocolate milk (Have to choose chocolate because i dont like the original taste. Haha)
OR
2) Gardenia bread + STEFFI peanut butter
OR
3) Oatmeal + HL chocolate drink
OR
4) Well, I'd usually eat breakfast with my dad when he send me to school in the morning @ some random chinese restaurant. So, sometimes it would be;
>>i) 2 Half-boiled eggs + Ham & chesse sandwich/hot dog bread [Most of the time, I'll have this as my breakfast]
PS; I know everything below this is unhealthy but I don't have any other choice when we're outside. So, sigh.
>>ii) Charsiew wan tan mee
>>iii) Claypot yee mee
>>iv) Spaghetti / Carbonara
>>v) Chee cheong fun
+ drinks (Hot chinese tea / Milo kosong)

Recess:
1) Jacob's Hi-Iron crackers + mineral water
OR
2) Fruits + mineral water
OR
3) Skip

Lunch:
1) Economy rice (A plate; 3/4 vegetables + 1/4 meat and rice or sometimes no rice at all)
+ drinks (Cold chinese tea / milo kosong / mineral water / or anything without sugar)

Teatime or whatever it is:
1) Fruits + mineral water
OR
2) Fruit juice only
OR
3) Jacob's Hi-Iron crackers + yakult/vitagen/sugarless soy-milk
OR
4) Skip

Dinner:
1) Fruits
OR
2) Economy rice
OR
3) Chicken rice
OR
4) Skip
+ drinks (Plain water/juice/yakult/milk)

Daily supplements:
1) Blackmores multivitamins for teen

Help and thanks in advance! smile.gif
*
yawn.gif 52kg seems alright, you want to further lose another 4-7kg? Isn't that too much? Why do you want to lose so much?

Hahahaha your breakfast - how often does your dad drop you off at school? As you know, Charsiew wan tan mee, Claypot yee mee, Spaghetti / Carbonara, Chee cheong fun aren't the most decent Chinese food around. If you have to eat Wantan mee, ask them not to put oil (which is pork lard). I think Spaghetti is fine as it's tomato based. Have it with little cheese. Carbonara is very creamy and rich, so yes it contains more calories than spaghetti.

Jacob's biscuits are quite oily. You can have some nuts, yoghurt, milk, oats etc for recess other than biscuits. Yakult/vitagen is high in sugar, big no-no for me. And oh, I hope your fruit juice is fresh fruit juice? Made it on your own with the fresh fruits that you bought? If it's bought from supermarket, please ditch it. Juices bought in bottles/ packs/ cans usually contain sugar and preservative. Replace all your fruit juice with plain water or green tea.

Dinner - seems decent but if you must take chicken rice, replace the oily chicken rice with WHITE RICE. Better to take chicken breast and skip on the skin. The sauce - it has a lot of oil as well so make sure you hold back and just have a little.

Hi guys,

Need help losing weight. I'm looking to lose around 8 inches around my waist by year end. Building muscles would be nice but the priority here is to lose weight.

Can someone help me with a workout plan? I'm also starting to get swimming lessons so I will alternate days with swimming. So a workout for 3 days a week.

Workout Days will be Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

My diet during this period is:

Breakfast: Yogurt and Granola Bar
Lunch: Lots of chicken and veges
Dinner: Apple and some nuts, maybe yogurt if I'm still hungry

Without working out at all and just staying strictly on the diet, I've lost 3kg and 1 inch around my waste.

Any advice would be great. Thanks.
*
I hope you know that it doesn't matter what time you eat, your calories intake per day is the same. So go ahead and eat up for your dinner.

Anyway going back to your meal plan... it's not very healthy. Lack of nutrients. I've just talked about Granola bars in one of the thread and it's packed with sugar so you wouldn't want to take it daily. Take the bar sparingly or as pre-workout to give you the energy needed.

You're not taking any carbs? They're not bad, you know. Take some rice (brown rice has more nutrients than white) along with your chicken and vege. You can have the same healthy meal for your dinner (rice, chicken, vege). No doubt you're able to drop some weight based on your current meal plan but I don't think that this is something that will last. You need to plan for long term, not temporary.

I find granola bars a good quick snack especially as I don't have much time in the morning. I do understand that perhaps I should have it less frequently though.

As for my lack of carbs: I just noticed that I lose weight a lost faster by limiting my carb intake. I do have some carbs but not much. I don't cook so access to brown rice is not possible. I try to get some carbs from my veges, fruits, etc.

What about my workout plan? How should I go about that?
*
Yes, take granola bars once in awhile, I'm limiting myself to max 2-3 bars per week. Only take when I really need the convenience.

You're losing weight because:
Output > Input (food intake)

If you need 1,500kcal to maintain your body weight each day and you're only consuming 1,000kcal per day, no doubt you'll see your weight dropping.

Workout plan? You mean swimming on Monday, Wed and Sat?
Besides, you'll need to state what sort of workout you're referring to. Weight lifting? Do you do cardio?

*
Your intention not to build muscles right?
If priority is to lose weight then you can do HIIT as some seniors always suggest. HIIT - High Intensity Interval Training (go Google up). And you can find a lot of HIIT workouts from Youtube.

I would suggest that you do some functional training to tone up as well.
