My wife is now in 8 weeks of pregnancy, and for the last 2 days, she has observed some light spotting. So, eventually she went for the doctor. According to the doc, she said the fetus is not so "stable" as usual.

My wife is now prescribed with "Duphaston", which is a kind of hormone replacement therapy. Twice a day for 10 days.

Therefore, I wonder if anyone of you have actually had
1. This spotting during pregnancy, and what is the consequences of the spotting?
2. Duphaston during pregnancy, and will it cause any side-effect to the fetus or baby

Cheers!!

It's good to hear from you all.

Yes, my wife actually has enough rest. She sleep more than usual. Vomit, no appetite, headache, sore breast with other pregnancy symptoms.

But, just wonder if you or your wife also took the same medicine as well. I found out that this medicine is banned across US due to some reasons.

Anyhow, hopefully everything goes well!!!

Duphaston is quite widely use by Malaysians gynae to 'stabilise' a featus.

I also have spotting during 6-7 weeks of pregnancy and was on duphaston too.

In other words, can I assume it is safe and no side-effect seen so far for this prescription?

Had spotting since week 6 - doctor prescribed Duphaston as well. Started with 1 tablet per day for first few weeks, until one day, fresh blood gushed out after sneezing. Doctors diagnosed that I was having a threatened miscarriage (most of the spotting cases when they cannot explain why the bleeding occurs, it is referred as a "threatened miscarriage". At that moment, I was put to complete bed rest with 4 tablets of Duphaston daily.

Then, bleeding reduced, and they reduced the dosage to 2 tablets / day until week 16.

Again, diagnosed with cervical thinning and premature contractions at week 26, been on complete bed rest again until now (week 33). Took steroid jabs to help baby's lungs inflate in case I go into labor early.

I personally feel that it's not Duphaston's side effects. My advise is, take lots of rest, and even if she has got no appetite, make sure that she takes at least some milk / soda biscuits.

In case if anything happens, feel free to get a second opinion from another gynae.

The consequence of this spotting is miscarriage. And the only way to be sure is to wait and watch. Some people progress from spotting to heavy mensus and passing out the fetus. Some have spotting for a day or two..and that's it. They will then have a normal pregnancy.
Duphaston is a progesterone derivative that helps to maintain the pregnancy. There's no clear cut studies to suggest that it is beneficial but it is a common practice for OBGYN specialists to prescribe such medications to ladies who have spotting in the early pregnancy.

If your doctor has done a scan and has mentioned that the fetus is not so stable, you have to be mentally prepared for a miscarrige.

Once again, only time will tell. Do go back to your doctor if your wife's bleeding becomes heavy or she starts feeling lower abdominal pains.
Avoid all sorts of chinese/traditional medications despite what your relatives may tell you.

i was taking duphaston during my 1st pregnancy, for about the 1st three month.
My friend also being prescribed by her gynae, she took for all her three pregnancy. Believed it is the norm that gynae prescribed to stable the situation. Some even need to have injection.
My gynae called it is 'onn toi' pill.
Yes, it is not suitable to take xtra supplement (chinese herb) until condition is stable... esp the 1st trimester

There is no other way. What other said is true. Only by more rest and taking meds accordingly as prescribe by doctor. Every med has it's side effect. Doctor will not prescribe meds thats proven to be harmful to fetus.

As for miscarriage, it has many factors to it. If it really happens *touch wood*, no onecan do anything including the doctor. It's a way of mother nature expelling unhealthy fetus (although not in all cases as there are many factors to it).

What we can do, more rest, adjust emotionally, do not put to much stress on self and take the medication prescribed. Any doubt should ask the Doctor, or else try put trust in them as they are trying to help u. Cheers.

Congratulations on your twins pregnancy!! wub.gif wub.gif Double happiness for you. rclxms.gif

History of miscarriages reminds us to be extra careful with each future pregnancy. I have been a drink that known to help protect the women womb and ovaries, it is safe to consumed during pregnancy. I shall inbox the product info to you, if you want to know or research more into it.

Stay strong and healthy, mummy!

spotting during early pregnancy is normal.

i think the reason why doctors prescribe hormones like Duphaston is to be on the safe side.

because spotting could also mean some problem, it depends. especially if u have a history of miscarriage before.
