This could probably be fixed by updating the firmware, I guess....

btw, you can buy a WIFI SDcard and your camera will have wifi cpabilities- not a big deal.

That's what Nikon is targeting now, D3200 better than D5100, then D5200 better than D7000, then D7100/7200 or D8000 take over D300s as top range semi pro Dx body

there are rumours who believe the D300s replacement to be an FX entry level, something similair to the D700 capabilities but with updated tech.
when the D800 came out, I am very sure now that the D300s replacement wiil be an FX body, else i will be eating my sdcards for dinner.....

haha i will take both eventually but at the moment only can choose one. i guess the latter one would be a no brainer eh? smile.gif
*
if you are gonna get both eventually, then the question now is which one will benefit you first before getting the other. My advise
get the 35mm if you are doing more general photography atm
get the 85mm if you do more portrait, headshots small groups, long distance shots.

so which one is your priority, get the lens that fulfils that priority
one more for the road, with the 35mm you can always crop, with the 85mm bokeh can't be reproduce

happpy soul searching bro! tongue.gif

p.s. 35mm f/1.4 bokeh is comparable with the 85mm.......hahaha laugh.gif

guys.. want to ask...

how the accuracy (not speed) of outer AF point (not the central cross- type)
of nikon d7000 and d300s... at large aperture
(using nikon lens, 50mm f1.8, 85 f1.8, 70-200 f2.8)
same as d700?
*
on my d300s, i'd say its about 99.9% acccurate, only 0.1% would be operator error, i.e. when i focus on my son running towards me, if i dont pan fast enough, camera will capture regardless of subject in focus, for portraits, im using a dynamic 21 point AFsetting without AF tracking on, for non moving subject its 100% accurate, i use this setting for a faster AF speed

When i switch to sports mode, -full 3D matrix, 51 points AF continous focuing, its dead accurate if it locks in a moving subject.

thanks... that a big help...
still need to wait for d300s refreshment though (d400?)
*

yes, rumours are that there will be a replacement by this year, maybe april like the D3200, maybe sept with the D7100, who knows......
if you can wait why not, but if you are passionate about photograp, then getting one now and go thru all the options and settings available would be a very interesting journey. E.g. my WB now i use K values based on the lighting available, most use grey card, i use my own instinct and judgement, the results can be very interesting at times smile.gif

ojtee, how to use the grey card properly? any link we can refer too?
*
As per Jchue

no links, just do a general search on google

you can use a greycard for PP, i haven't done this as i prefer tweak on camera rather than PP
Take a picture of the greycard in the photo, use that setting as a base to change your WB settings on your RAW photos.

i always thought grey card is just placed in the frame, and then that frame is used as a benchmark for the rest of the shots under the same lighting condition so that RAW shooters during PP will have an easy job doing WB.
for JPG shooters who want instant WB, then there are stuff like the WB lens cap like the expodisc.
*
yes correct, the more advance body has PRE settings for individual storage of WB settings, this saves 1 step if you do alot of PP, and also if you take shots at the same places, its a great feature to have, if you know how to use it

Hi guys,

i was just wondering to upgrade to FX body or get a nikon 24-70 2.8

Alot of ppl will say go for lens first body later... anyone can tell me why?

btw im using Nikon D90 + kit lens + 50mm 1.8D
*
Pleae give more info of your plans and thoughts, your statement is too generalised for good constructive advise from the seniors here

why do you need an FX body?
why do you need a 24-70mm?

lens first - IMHO it would have been pressumed that you have already mastered the current lenses you have, FX lens are larger, heavier, and very likely have greater resolutions, that will probably enhance any mistakes( is this a correct term to use?) you have on your current body. it will take some tme getting use to the newer lens, and when you are ready for the body upgrade, you will only need to worry about the functions of the newer camera and not the technique part.....i dunno if that makes any sense, any care to explain it in other words?

body first - you already have a basic FX lens you plan to use, your future upgrade will be a higher spec lens, and you need time to get used to the camera functions and layout - if you shoot alot of sports n high speed stuff, you will need to know the camera like the back of your palms......

Lens dilemma here.
Currently using D7000 + 18-105mm.

I'm looking for a walkabout lens. I mostly shoot buildings but when I'm not I almost always put the focal length @ 50mm and shoot. Most of the time I'm happy with the results.

Any suggestions? Not sure if using a prime would suit me.
*
the 18-105mm is already a good walkabout lens, what is that you find limiting with your current zoom?
if you need more light, the 50mm f1.8G is a good companion

QUOTE(zhinsara @ Apr 16 2012, 11:54 AM)
So, has anyone speculated on the D400? It's the camera I'm most looking forward to to upgrade a D300s and D90. I'm definitely hoping that it'll be D800 style body with D3s or D4 sensor for my shooting work, but the rumors are flying otherwise (24mp DX, wtf?). What are all your thoughts on this?
*
Nikon is stepping up the DSLR market, the D3200 will takeover D5100 place, the D5200 will takeover D7000 place and the new D7100/7200 will take over as top DX body. The D300s however will come in as entry level FX.
I believe the D300s replacement will be another hot seller as the D800 as many DX shooters are upgrading to FX and the D800 is way out of reach for the normal enthuthiast-some jump over to other brands due to this.
My take is a 16/18mp sensor, inheret all of the good stuff from the D700

btw statement above is just a rumour from somewhere I read...... tongue.gif

When I first started to use manual focus ring eons back, my left hand held the lens, my other 2 other fingers were placed at the (my ex F3 ) the DOF preview and exposure lock button, i still use this method to hold my dslr
Nikon has consistently placed the buttons in a practical manner and for some who have been using Nikon bodies all this time will find it familair

There is no wrong or right to hold a camera, as long as you are comfortable and take good pictures

Agito, I hope you not taking a swipe/making fun at the Less Fortunate people......

i using d5100 and have few choices of lenses to choose from my workplace. i more into potrait, landscape and food photography so i want to know which ONE of it suits them all

    12-24 mm DX zoom
    14-24 mm full frame zoom
    17-35 mm full frame zoom
    14 mm full frame fixed
    18-200 mm full frame
    18 mm manual
    70-200 mm full frame
    80-200 mm full frame
    80-400 mm full frame
*
if you can choose 2 lens it would be
12-24mm
18-200mm

if just 1 lens, then 12-24mm, then crop the pictures since you have the 16mp sensor

but my suggestion would be the 16-85mm, you wont regret it

if i choose one lens among those, 70-200 without a doubt.
if 2 lenses, 14-24 and 70-200.
*
he's on a DX, 70-200mm he will have to stand on his chair to get a photo of the food, and 20 ft away or more to get full portrait pic ! but on FX its a different story.......

What are your insights on dry boxes?

I have been a small one for about 3years now.  since last year I saw that RH% is always close to 55%. Does these things need servicing or maintenance?  Its analog meter. I wonder how accurate is it.. Hmm..
*
needs to be calibrated once a year, esp if you keep at the lower end, i think you need to get a digital meter and compare it, if your analog once has an adjustable screw, just get it calibrated with the digital one, other than that, google is your friend

What's the advise for getting a photo printer, use will be mainly for work/client/presentation, max i'd print would be an A3 size but unlikely it will be on a routine basis. budget <rm1k

I'd buy a Nikon if there was one.......

I would say mentor is best choice. If cannot find mentor, find group of friends with same curiosity and interest who is willing to share. I seen it happen many times. Ppl break into groups and there will always be one who is more 'experimental' and the rest will follow, and everyone contributes to the group.

When I started playing, I was lucky to meet a few creative people, who kindly added me to their group. Learned many new ideas from them. Inspired. But now back to my old ways of randomly shooting  blush.gif
