Basically rims are choosen according to your riding style. Weight is usually the main criteria but for down hill rides, a lighter rim may not withstand heavy bashing so you must choose between rigidity and weight. For XC rides or as I can see in KL, mostly tar road rides, I think it is safe to choose any wheelsets that you fancy.
The more spokes it has, the easier it is to align and also more spokes makes the rim stronger just as in BMXes where some wheelsets are full of spokes. Off course less spokes makes the rim looks aesthetic so again i9t up to you to choose which category do you want to ride in.
Then there's spokes! Good spokes are not cheap too, eg. DT Swiss and some are even colored.
