My 1680z stopped working earlier this month during my vacation (make a strong gear sound when switched on and will not focus. When dismounted from camera, the focus ring can only turn a bit near 1m to infinity). So i sent it to the Sony service center in the Curve for checking.

Today the quotation come back, the technician said my lens motor is broken and the total cost for repair is RM889 (!!!). sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

That is just too costly to repair! So i need some advise from you all if you have experience in this. From what i see, i've got a few option:

1. Bite the bullet and ask Sony to repair for RM889
2. Send it to other shop for repair (anyone can recommend any?)
3. Don't repair and buy new lens (cost even more money!)

Also, I bought this lens in 2009 so the warranty has long expired.

Hope my fellow forummer can give me some advise

that the reason why i choose 16105 over 1680 when i got a crazy offer with 2 months lens @ RM1800 back on year 2009. as i know there is build quality issue on those day's 1680.

The 16105 will also gear strip I think.

I was wondering if you can ask Sony to just remove the dead motor or the gear attached with that motor. In that case you might be able to use it as manual focus lense (as far as my analysis suggests).
