P2 needs to have atleast 1 sedan in its stable of vehicles, else could be killed off by the increasing competition from foreign makes and not to mentioned the handicapped match it has been put with P1 since P2's inception.
Well, P2 really should localise atleast a 1.5L jap sedan car eg: vios, because there will always be a slice of the market for sedans for those who wanted a sedan but are not comfortable with P1's questionable QC or can't afford foreign makes.
Of course Japs won't permit P2 to have the latest engines as it would have detrimental effect on them.
It is just me but i firmly believe that P2's sedan will grab a much bigger slice of the pie since most locals defines what makes a proper car is by having an ass. It could smack P1's butt cheeks so hard, P1 might start to take things more seriously.
Well olman,
Knowing that P2 only rebadges vehicles from their partner company (or for most of us who actually know, the PARENT company), there would likely only be a sedan from Daihatsu's lineup of vehicles. But there are few things that you may not have considered.
1. Sales of the Myvi here in Malaysia are actually trashing the sales of the Passo over there by a mile. Note that the 2011 Passo is now primarily catering to the ladies who need a decent city car, compared to the previous generation which had sporty iterations for the other gender to consider, such as the TRD Sports M, Racy, and Boon X4 from Daihatsu. Something tells you that they have fulfilled more sales here than they ever require in their home country, and they're not going to thin the sales by introducing a sedan.
2. It's not only our country which sells the Myvi. Our neighbouring countries have the Sirion, and the Justy (quite likely). Also, keep in mind that Toyota and Daihatsu are one of the biggest market players in SEA. And a huge chunk of this market is from the sub 1.5L range. See where I'm coming from?
A new engine(s) brought over here wouldn't be detrimental to the Japanese - the 1.3L and 1.5L engine capacities are basically in almost every car they sell in SEA, and they represent the majority of the market. There's the Rush, Avanza, Terios, Myvi, Xenia, and Sirion. IINM Daihatsu has a lineup of light pickup trucks as well which utilise the same powerplant. With the market so huge, the only thing that would hinder the change would be the problem of logistics.
So yes, a sedan car by P2 in Malaysia - I would say likely not. Perodua's not likely to introduce one that would compete with Toyota's Vios since they are on the same side, and even more not likely to compete with the Saga since P1 and P2 are on the same team as well, which is the Government's.
By the way, this is a healthy debate, by no means this is an angry rebuttal
