what do u mean printer function?
if u meant network printer that anyone can print things thru network any router should work if you got a printer with network port connects the printer with network cable to the router, the printer itself become a network printer so anyone who is on the network can see the printer and use it like normal |

You can't just buy a cable where it's not USB but an ethernet socket and connect ur printer to ur router directly and expect it to work , your printer gotta have build in ethernet connectivity to do so . It gotta have the capability to assign himself an IP address . Besides that you gotta know your router doesnt have the capability of communicating with the router directly if it doesnt have the ethernet connectivity feature (that's why printer driver is needed to be install in your pc so that your pc know how to communicate with the printer). If your printer has a usb port , you can buy a wireless print server to make it become wireless . Else you gotta have to use a computer as a host , connect the printer to it and turn on printer sharing inside your pc setting so that any laptop connected to the same network(same router as the host pc are connected to) can detect the printer and send the data to your host pc and your host pc send it to the printer . But this required your host pc to be turn on whenever you wanna print so that it can be used as an interface between your other devices(laptop etc) and printer

QUOTE(Tommykeng @ Feb 7 2012, 01:51 AM) printer socket or usb from printer cannot be converted to ethernet, they are completely different thingyou need a printer that has built in ethernet connectivity which means the printer itself has a lan port then connect it to router with lan port, you got two options: 1 - if you are going to use a printer with printer socket or with usb, make it available to network users who can use the printer the only way is to connect the printer on a computer, and share the printer thru the computer to other network users and that computer must be running all the time. 2 - buy a new printer with ethernet connectivity, connect it to router directly with lan cable. I have compiled the relevant posts to reply accordingly. But in short, you can indeed network enable a USB printer (without ethernet/Wi-Fi function) to work like one with built-in Wi-Fi, if you have the proper hardware and software.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « The default unifi router (and by that, I am referring to the TM D-Link DIR-615) can connect a USB printer and 'convert' it into a 'Wi-Fi printer', with some setup. I know it works, because I set up my Fuji Xerox DocuPrint M205 b which doesn't have ethernet/LAN to print wirelessly via the DIR-615. Just connect the USB printer cable from your USB printer to the USB port on the DIR-615. You will then need to install D-Link's SharePort software, which you can download here. Credit to DLink'ed Router over here. Once you have done that, just configure it accordingly - you should be able to get instructions by searching online. Note: I suggest you get the older version of SharePort through the aforesaid link. I spent hours trouble-shooting before I got the setup to work (it didn't work with the newer version of SharePort). This could be due to TM's custom firmware. YMMV but don't say I didn't warn you if you still try the newer version of Shareport. And yes, there are other routers with similar functions (SharePort is just D-Link's brand, it may go by another moniker) - Asus is one of the known pioneer brands with SharePort-type technology, though I have no personal experience setting it up. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « As per above, you can indeed use the DIR-615 to network enable a non-network USB printer through the USB port on the router provide you have the right hardware and software. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « The above is correct to the extent it concerns printers with a network (ie LAN) port ie ethernet function. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « I believe you have got your answer above. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Option 1 and 2 is correct, prior to routers with SharePort or similar technology being available, which now brings a 3rd option. True network printers should still perform better (in terms of speed/capability to handle numerous users/huge printing volume etc) especially in office environments but option 3 ie through SharePort-type technology enabled routers should be sufficient for casual/light users. |

QUOTE(fixgd @ Oct 14 2012, 07:25 PM) so right until now, do u have instability using the shareport with unifi as the other forumer recalled? in the beginning, there's a problem detecting the printer sometimes but after 1 or 2 days, no problem at all. but everytime shareport is switched on i get this "Unable to load or find: TWAIN_32.DLL" error which is annoying like hell, especially if you choose to load shareport at startup. it seemed this Twain_32.dll error is to do with scanner function, which i don't have or use, but it keeps popping up...i cant find any fix to this bug yet... that aside, its printing fine..no problem at all. |

QUOTE(MrSpeedy @ Mar 6 2013, 04:50 PM) any model / brand that you can recommend ? I googled many days for this solution to enable me to print at office and home until my eyeballs get tiring...still something is missing there to enable for printing through wireless. Any expert here can answer my query here : 1) I tried to connect my existing TP link MR3420 old router to printer (with Lan port) using RJ 45 network cable and configure the same IP address as router in the printer driver, it failed....do I need to configure the router to be connected into Unifi in order to all computers print at the printer ? what have I missing ? or any other better solution 2) for home, can I just buy a usb print server so that I can print anywhere from home ? I know only the IT expert able to solve this problem and your kind advices is deeply appreciated ! |
