The Times are reporting that Steven Gerrard was substituted against Manchester United as a result of a hamstring injury. Doubt for Wolves.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has revealed that Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish wanted to delay Tuesday's Premier League meeting between the two sides to avoid a clash with transfer deadline day.

Dalglish on Monday insisted that he would not look to buy or sell any players before the January transfer window closes on Tuesday night (see below).

But McCarthy has suggested that the Scot could be - or at least was - looking to do some last-minute transfer business.

He said: "I know Liverpool wanted to play the game on the Wednesday and asked me about it and I said 'no chance'.

"We are going down to QPR on Saturday so why would I play a day later? I want as much time to prepare for both games but I could understand Liverpool's request.

"Kenny just asked me because they might be doing something [in the transfer market] and I understood it - but he understand my reasons for not changing."

Carra coming to Kota Kinabalu

31st January, 2012
KOTA KINABALU: England’s international footballer, Jamie Carragher, is expected to be present to give his support to the Penampang District Under-12 Futsal Championship organised by the Sabah Sports Board (LSNS) on Feb 18 and 19.

The LSNS Sports Division Manager, Terrance Edward Pudin, said the Liverpool defender would meet football fans in Sabah besides contributing gifts in the form of Liverpool T-shirts and consolation prizes for the top players in the championship.

“The championship is to develop new talents from the early stage and will be the first programme to be held in the Penampang district after its successful implementation in Tambunan, Sandakan, Tamparuli, Keningau and Tawau,” he said in a statement, here yesterday.

Pudin said the carnival, in collaboration with several government agencies including the Sabah State Sports Council, Sabah State Education Department, Sabah Football Association (Sabah FA), the Jamie Carragher 23 Foundation and Kinabalu Reds, would be held at the Football Stadium at the Penampang Sports Complex.

The championship is expected to be opened by the Federal Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Tan Sri Bernard Dompok, who is also the Member of Parliament for Penampang while Sabah Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin would close the championship.

Now that a certain newly refreshed Luis is coming back in, what of an 'in form' Carroll?
Will Kenny play 2 strikers upfront or the single?
If single, whos it going to be?
We have seen the problem with playing Carroll and Luis together.
The understanding and style of play do not compliment each other.

A nice headache for the gaffer........ biggrin.gif

Just checked our fixtures, lots of tough matches coming. In Premier League, we're facing Tottenham, Man Utd, Arsenal then Sunderland. While we still have FA Cup and Carling Cup final to play this month.

With Suarez coming back after taking some "break", Kuyt ended his goal drought, Carroll showing improvements & Stevie G being fit. Lucky we're having a full squad for these matches. (apart from Lucas)
Not worried about the top teams. But Sunderland seems to be revived under ONeil.
Potential banana.

Suarez seems to like his holidays in the winter as evidenced by his last season at Ajax! biggrin.gif
AND lets hope his season starts NOW!

Agger always had the talent. Injuries were/is (hopefully the former) his biggest enemy. Skrtel is surely one of the most improved players and it isn't purely coincidental that his best form coincided with the return of Agger to the side. Carra and Skrtel are too similar. Neither is particularly good on the ball and neither can turn quickly. Agger on the other hand, can dribble as well as any centre back can, and he is a mixture of strength and pace. It's been awhile since we had the best defensive record in the league. Not since the partnership of Hyypia and Henchoz/Carra have we seen a defensive pairing so formidable. Whilst the former pairings were shielded by one Didi Hamann, our newly formed pairing has had little protection since the injury to Lucas with no disrespect to Spearing who quite simply isn't yet in the mould of the Kaiser. We also played a really deep defensive line under Houllier meaning the back four got a lot of protection. We've been playing a higher line under Dalglish, meaning our back four is more exposed. Makes it even more impressive that we have just a good defensive record.
Skrtel has been bringing them balls out form defence as well! biggrin.gif
Dagger and Skrtel really look comfortable together.
Plus of course, the other backs in Johnson/Kelly and Enrique

Our supporting strikers and midfielders need to get in the box more(repeating this like aparrot).
No point playing the Big man if theres NOONE to get to those lay downs/headons/crosses.
Carroll is not prolific.
But if we play him, the players need to anticipate he WILL win the high balls.

Hardly anyone is in the box during these plays.
They are all standing outside the 25 yd till Luis came on.

Nearly hard a heart attack when Bale went through, when the transmission blacked oout for 20 secs!

QUOTE(Adryan @ Feb 8 2012, 07:22 AM)
So you're suggesting that Kenny is not being adventurous enough at Anfield?

I beg to differ.

I am very sure he tells them to win and score goals every game but on the pitch, it's only the players who can do that, not him in particular.

We dominate most games in terms of shots on goal and possession but we just can't score!

Spurs only best chance was the one on one between Bale and Reina and thankfully to Reina, he saved it but we had Suarez heading to Friedel from 3 yards, Andy blasting over the bar from 6 yards, Gerrard and Bellamy both hitting free kicks from 20 yards against the wall.

We're just not clinical enough. The fact that we have a 8.92% conversion ratio says that we've got probably the most shots in the league. If we had 28 goals from 50 shots, that's more than 50% but 8.92% suggests we score 8 goals from 100 shots whereas United and City get  20 goals in the same number of shots.
*
I agree.

Some here cant judge the difference bwteen a conservative and an advanterous approach.

We were pressing so high up the pitch on mon nite!
What more do they want?
Its the conversion thats the problem. The action in the final third is atroceous...
Our midfielders and forwrds are not goal minded enough to venture into the box, both 25 and 6 yd box to
get onto loose balls, knock downs, etc.
Thats the problem

Suarez

"I was not depressed at all [during suspension]. I knew what I did and there is a kind of football law that says 'what happens on the pitch, stays on the pitch and that's the end of the story'," Suarez told Uruguay's Radio Sport 890.

"I know against Man United it is going to be tense because I'm going to face Evra. But I'm used to having fans whistle at me. I hope nothing unusual happens. I'll have to forget what happened for that moment.

"I do know Man United fans are going to try to make me feel uncomfortable. But I have to tell them - they are going to spur me on if they whistle at me."

Liv is adventurous enough to win most game apart a few that played poorly.
If the conversion of chance is slightly better, those draw were already turn into win.
It is not about adventurous or not, it is about clinical finishing, taking the chance created. There were matches that Liv had 15 corners, 20+ shot, and fail to score, not to mentioned double digit hit the post/bar stat.

At 0-0, ask Reina to come forwards the leave the goal post for a corner kick during the end of the game?
Losing 0-1 time may be, but not at 0-0 time.

Statistics don't give the true picture contrary to what people think. We may have a high number of chance created but that's just quantitative analysis.Statistics gives you only that.We should be more interested in the qualitative analysis of things. There were many times our players were holding on the ball for too long. That was the result of the non availability of players in positions to receive the ball.Essentially it means there was a lack of movement from the players.
I have to admit that i am still unsure about the main cause of our lack of creativity. Some say we lack the playmaker like silva or benayoun for us last time to slip in through balls in tight situations, while some say our players are a too static.eg: adam, carroll Perhaps it's a combination of both.

From what i remember there were only four decent chances that i consider a quality chance at scoring a goal.
Johnson's shot at the end of first of half, kelly's shot, carroll's right foot disaster and suarez unfortunate handball.

The rest were just speculative shots that had a higher probability of missing the target than hitting it.

Taken from soccernet:we had 17shots,only 4 of them were on target. That backs my notion that the chances we create aren't good enough although i don't like using stats.

The statistics are indicative of one thing to me, progress. Shots on goal alone may not tell the whole story as some efforts are half chances, that I agree. However if you also take into account possession and corners, it will give you a better indication of how dominant a team was over another. I just couldn't be arsed to post all the stats. I'll post a few.

Liverpool vs Bolton
Possession : 60%-50%
Corners : 12-6

Liverpool vs Mancs
Possession : 56%-44%
Corners : 8-3

Liverpool vs Norwich
Possession : 55%-45%
Corners : 10-3

Liverpool vs Swansea
Possession : 52%-48%
Corners : 11-4

Liverpool vs Man City
Possession : 52%-48%
Corners : 8-5

Liverpool vs QPR
Possession : 62%-38%
Corners : 17-5

Liverpool vs Blackburn
Possession : 65%-35%
Corners : 9-2

Liverpool vs Newcastle
Possession 51%-49%
Corners : 7-0

Liverpool vs Stoke
Possession : 69%-31%
Corners : 11-1

I'll stop here because I think you all catch my drift. If you couple these stats with our shots on goal, I think it's clear we've dominated our opponents at Anfield. Sure we failed to convert but these stats show how well we've been playing, and is indicative of progress. Anyone remember how poorly we were playing prior to King Kenny's return? It wasn't that long ago. I've been a fan for 20 over years and I'm in no rush to win the title. I'm willing to be patient just so long as I see progress and I see a lot of it both on and off the pitch.
*
Nowadays teams come to Anfield to gain a point, cept maybe for Citeh and Mancs. Even then, they they thread
cautiously.

Possession does not equate a win. As k the Mancs. In fact, if i am not mistaken our wins came from teams
who come at us, thus freeing more space for attcks. This probably conincide with more wins AWAY from home where the home team takes up the initiative. When we had to take the initiative, thats where we
fall short, against the likes of Norwich, Wigan, Blackburn.

IMO the problems are these

a) We do not have prolific goal scorers

b) Our midfielders do not know how to shoot! i am serious. Which midfielder ex Stevie has a good shot?

c) Our midfielders are naturally not goal getters ex for Maxi. If i am not mistaken Skrtel has same no. goals
this season as Adam(incl penos) and more than Hendo!

d) Our midfielders are hustle and bustle type.....no GUILE aka Beardsley, Molby, Kennedy

prophetjul, I could not agree more with you analysis...In my mind, just if the Fernando Torres stay little while longer with LFC and should
he partner Luiz Suarez, that would be a terrific goal-scorer combination with flair and passion rather than Suarez with Caroll with different striking features
although Caroll is injured earlier and just coming back to form.

That should solve the majority of the goal-scoring problem that LFC is facing. In additional, midfielders should be trained to be somewhat backup striker for
Suarez and Caroll rather than hold on to their own role although Bellamy is a striker afterall but he himself could not consistently produce goals for LFC.

-Just my 2 cents
*
i lived in the Liverpool days of the late 80s and early 90s....
Ahhhhhhhh... the goals came from all over the park. Support from all over and non stop running.
Attack/Pressing was Defence!

The name of one F Class-ress should be banned from all Pool forums.... biggrin.gif

IMO carroll will have it hard to combine with Luis. Their type of play is extensively different.
As we have all witnessed, fitting Carroll in is akin to a sq peg in the poverbial round hole.
If we were to play pass and move, carroll will be that sq peg.
Hes not build and does not have the skills for such.

Hes a TYPICAL british no.9. A bully, hopefully anyway.

Compare the latin flair of pass and move of end of last season
with Maxi, Luis, Kyut and mirieles and

Luis, hendo, Adam, Carroll..............a world apart.

Viceversa, Luis will have a frustrating time with carroll with contrasting styles.
A Cavani or Llorente type would be hugely more fitting.

Thus Carroll would find it difficult. However, he could be used when all fails.
But this begs the question: What style is Kenny going towards? Only he can answer that.........

TOMMY SMITH is selling all the medals from his glittering Liverpool FC career.

The Anfield Iron's prized collection, which includes league title, FA Cup, UEFA Cup and European Cup winners' medals, will go under the hammer later this month.

In total there are 75 lots which are expected to generate in the region of £120,000.

"I had a wonderful career but the memories I’ve got are more important to me than the medals and the shirts," Smith said.

"I’m getting old and the money is of more use to me now than the medals. This is about me putting my family first."

IT’S a decision Tommy Smith hasn’t taken lightly.

The Liverpool legend thought long and hard before coming to the conclusion it was time to part company with all the spoils from his illustrious career.

Later this month the Anfield Iron’s unique collection of sporting memorabilia will go under the hammer at Bonhams auctioneers in Chester.

All his precious medals and framed shirts from some of the biggest games in Liverpool’s history will go to the highest bidder.

In total there are 75 lots and if they all reach their guide price the sale will generate in the region of £120,000 (view the full collection here).

Smith remains fiercely proud of everything he achieved for the Reds after signing as a schoolboy under Bill Shankly in 1960.

The tough-tackling defender made 638 appearances up to 1978, winning four league titles, two FA Cups, two UEFA Cups and the European Cup.

The 66-year-old former Liverpool skipper insists the sale isn’t borne out of financial necessity. Instead it’s a practical solution as he plans for the future.

“It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time,” he said.

“I had them all packed up in the loft and then a few years ago I moved them to a bank for safe keeping. It’s not as if I’ve been used to having my medals all out on display at home and seeing them every day.

“I hadn’t seen them for about two years as they were in the bank and I just thought what the hell are they doing there?

“They are worth an awful lot of money but no-one is benefiting from them all just sitting there. It’s not helping me and it’s not helping my family.

“It was absolutely brilliant to win all those medals. I had a wonderful career and everyone knows I gave everything I had for the club.

“But the memories I’ve got are more important to me than the medals and the shirts.

“I’m not skint, I don’t have to do this. But I’m getting old and the money is of more use to me now than the medals.

“I am suffering these days with health problems linked to my football days. I’ve got two false knees, a false hip and a false elbow.

“This way hopefully those people who buy the items will be happy and I’ll be happy as well with the money generated. It’s about me putting my family first. I want to ensure one day I’m able to leave them some money.”

The auction is taking place at Bonhams in Chester on Wednesday, February 22 at 11am.

There are medals, shirts, plaques, tankards, silver salvers, glassware and signed photographs from Smith’s career. There’s also the programme from his Reds debut against Birmingham City in May 1963.

The game is still Smith's proudest moment – afterwards he walked twice around the outside of the ground barely believing he had played for his beloved Reds.

The guide price for the framed shirt from his solitary full England appearance against Wales in 1971 is £3,000 with the blue velvet cap he was presented with at £1,000.

However, the showpiece items are undoubtedly his incredible haul of club medals.

Smith was famously part of Liverpool’s first FA Cup winning side in 1965 when they beat Leeds in the final at Wembley. His medal is expected to fetch around £10,000 with the shirt he wore around £8,000.

In 1973 Smith skippered the Reds to their first European trophy as they lifted the UEFA Cup after beating Borussia Monchengladbach 3-2 on aggregate. Around £4,000 is expected for that medal.

Four years later the defender played a starring role during a special night in Rome with Smith scoring the second in the Reds’ 3-1 win over Borussia Monchengladbach in the final of the European Cup, sending the 25,000-strong travelling Kopites wild.

The guide price for that coveted medal is £10,000.

*More from Tommy: Click here to read his archive of columns on Liverpool FC

Smith admits there are some items which were especially difficult to part with.

“I was made up to win the FA Cup in 1965. As a kid I had dreamed about walking up those steps to the Royal Box,” he said.

“When my mother took me up to Anfield to sign for the club she told Bill Shankly ‘Liverpool have never won the Cup but with my son in the team you will’.

“After we won the final and I got back into the dressing room at Wembley I remember Shanks said to me ‘your mum certainly knows a lot about football!’

“To be captain when Liverpool won their first European trophy in 1973 was another proud night. That was absolutely tremendous.

“Then there was the European Cup final in 1977.

“People always want to talk about the goal I scored in Rome.

“They are the three that really stick out for me. If I was going to keep any of them then it would be those three, but I made the decision to let everything go.

“It’s something I talked about with my son Darren and daughter Janette. I’ve still got plenty of photos, including ones of the medals for the four grandkids.

“The medals themselves will go elsewhere but I’ll always have the memories of those special days. That’s enough for me.”

Bonhams’ sports consultant Dan Davies admits Smith’s collection has already generated a great deal of interest and he expects that to increase ahead of February 22.

“When you look at Tommy’s achievements, this really is unique,” he said.

“The number of medals he won is extraordinary and Tommy is an icon from a remarkable era which will never be repeated.

“We are delighted to get the collection and we’re looking forward to a very successful sale.

“All of the items are on our internet site with photos for people to look at.

“People can bid in four different ways.

“They can ring up in advance and say how much they are willing to bid up to for an item.

“They can book a telephone call to take part in the auction as it happens, they can follow it all online or they can attend in person on the day.

“Liverpool have followers all across the world so we’re expecting interest from beyond the UK.”

Factfile on Liverpool FC legend Tommy Smith

Born: April 5 1945 (Liverpool).

Reds appearances: 638

Reds goals: 48

International caps: 1

Signed for Liverpool as a schoolboy in May 1960.

Handed his debut by Bill Shankly against Birmingham City in May 1963.

Part of the Reds’ first FA Cup-winning side in 1965 as Leeds were beaten in the final at Wembley.

Won the first of his four championship medals in 1966, with others in 1973, 1976 and 1977.

Suffered the disappointment of a 2-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the 1966 European Cup Winners' Cup final at Hampden Park.

Appointed captain by Shankly in March 1970 and skippered Liverpool to their first European trophy as they lifted the UEFA Cup in 1973. He won the UEFA Cup again in 1976.

Won only full England cap in the British Home Championship against Wales at Wembley in 1971.

After being moved to right-back, he collected his second FA Cup winners’ medal in 1974 after a 3-0 win over Newcastle United. In total he played in four FA Cup finals as he was on the losing side in 1971 and 1977.

Equally at home in either full-back position or in the centre of defence, his versatility was invaluable to new boss Bob Paisley.

In the 1977 European Cup final against Borussia Monchengladbach in Rome it was 1-1 when Smith headed home Steve Heighway's corner. Phil Neal wrapped up the Reds’ greatest triumph from the spot.

Two days after that remarkable night in Rome he had his testimonial at Anfield against a Bobby Charlton Select Xl in front of 35,694 fans.

Decided to delay his retirement. Made another 34 first appearances in 1977/78 before ending his 18-year association with the Reds.

Spent the summer of 1978 in the NASL with Los Angeles Aztecs, as player, then player-coach.

Joined John Toshack’s Swansea City in 1978 and helped them earn promotion out of the old Third Division before hanging up his boots in 1979.
