Type of camera/lens/accesories : Digital Compact Camera

Budget: Below RM1100

Your Location:  KL

Preferable brand :  Nikon / Sony

Type of photography u want to do :  Daily shots. not portraits shot of course.

Any specific models in mind? :  - CoolPix S6200 / Sony Hx7V / coolpix L120

Any specific features u want? :  - more than 5x zoom. good night shots.
*
Can't say about the others but I just gotten myself a HX9V which is quite similar to the HX7V. Image quality should be the same.
As a general purpose camera.. I suppose its ok if you're not that picky. It's decent for facebook and web use up to 1024pixel resolution. At bigger resolutions .. then not so nice liao compared to enthuasiast compacts like the XZ-1 and the S90.

Just took these today while play play with the camera... click on the spoiler. See if it's acceptable to you or not... they're non-edited ... just resized.

One thing though, the steadyshot on active mode is really powerful. Video is awesome on this little camera.

Actually was advice by a friend that I should get just the body and later on top up with tamron 17-50 lens. How you guys think?

Sounds good.. though the 17-50mm Tamron autofocus speed will perform below par if the outer focus points on the 60D is used. It's a known issue.

Most every-thing proof camera's aren't THAT good lo.. so I suggest a second hand Sony TX5 (click on the spoiler) or a Kodak ZX5 which kinda a fun cheap camera. Don't expect miracles though in terms of image quality.

thanks for ur detailed reply.
i was really impressed with the night shots. first tested on my friends nex3. Handheld twillight is just great for night shots.
the zoom is a plus and 3d is just a gimmick.
cant really make up my choice yet.

is not comparing which specific model. nikon vs sony..which is better?
thanks.

No problem and there's no point comparing brands.. it's just a bunch of alphabets on a sticker.

All of the models you mentioned are capable of shooting very good pictures.

Keep in mind though that GF2 with the kit zoom lens may not offer any advantage over something like the LX5 even though the former's got a bigger sensor.

Interchangeable lens cameras are all about the lens.. they need specific lens for specific functions to show their best.

If just specs... then go to http://snapsort.com/compare/Sony-TX10-vs-nikon-s9100 and check it out yourself.

Though specs may not say everything.

Type of photography u want to do : Landscape, night landscape, lowlight, macro, sports. Sometimes potrait.
Any specific models in mind? : Sony A35 SLT, Canon 550D

Kindly recommend. smile.gif Thank you.

P/S: I currently have a compact Canon S90, but looking for something more especially when it comes to landscape and night photos. Been looking at 550D for a long time, but it's an old model (by now) and still pricey. The A35 is new, lightweight and within my budget. Also tried it at a store and I like the feel/controls. Just not sure if hopping over to Sony from Canon is a good move.

Tried on my friend's Nikon D90 but I don't like the feel of a Nikon.. not used to it.
*
My only comment is whether u prefer electronic viewfinder (EVF) or an optical one (OVF)

EVF has a lot of benefits like live histogram and immediately you can see your exposure... and cameras with EVF also generally means have better implementation of liveview.

OVF on the other hand is just mirrors reflection the image in light form through the len. It's like a window through the lens. You see what the lens see.

So just whether you prefer to look through a window to the world or viewing via a LCD screen.

Does she need interchangeable lens? Is she taking photography as a hobby or its just for snapshots? Is she going to buy more lens? How much does she weight convenience (point and shoota-bility) over image quality.
Cos cameras are all about compromises

QUOTE(Zhao @ Feb 12 2012, 10:33 PM)
but preferably canon s95/s100 or olympus xz1 as you r new in photography.

XZ-1 sucks for "HD recording".
IMHO, for someone "new to photography".. a dslr is a better tool for learning.
If they just want a camera to snap shooting that trip etc.. then maybe a travel zoom is a better choice.

nex 5n or gx 1? which one is better? type of photography that ill be taking, potraint, scenery and landscape.. generally ill take a photography of everything.
which one is better performing in lowlight condition?
*
If just with the standard zoom lens... NEX-5N better but micro four third has much better selection of autofocus lens.

GX1 is also more responsive in terms of controls and autofocus.

With primes like 14mm f2.5 + 20mm f1.7/25mm f1.4 + 45mm f1.8... then micro four third is much better imho as a shooter system.

I said system because I think that while the camera itself is important but these are interchangeable lens cameras....the camera bodies have very short lifecycle.. they get replaced every year with better models but the lens stays the same.

See above.

Also for cool-ness factor... silver Olympus E-P3 with 12mm or 45mm. Looks awesome for ladies.

picture quality wise lx5 on par with gf2? seems like gf2 needs more investment on lens only to win over lx5. thanks for the advice!

I just made a post as to the reason why on the link below.

http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=48956056

It's based on the XZ-1 which share the same sensor as the LX-5.. there's some differences in the lens spec but generally, the concept applies.

Here's what a pro can do with a LX5

thanks btw.

Anything wrong with your current camera? Is it broken? Is it limiting you?

If answer to the above questions is NO ... then 2 options:

Option 1: Do nothing cos its just Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS) ... also known as gear lust or gatal in Malay.

Option 2: Save up and buy D4... cos anything lesser than that still will get GAS.

If the answer to the above is YES... please describe

NEX-5N but limitation is that it's bigger than the others and I hate sony LCD's.. super inaccurate.

For the rest... the most balanced one is the LX5 and I'm quite sure (I don't own one but have the XZ1) that if you can work around its limitations, it does pretty similar photos to the NEX.

Problem is...

1- Those are mainstream consumer cameras so most of the folks in this forum play dslr etc

2- Even the folks playing compact camera woudn't have tried all of them before to give you a useful answer... since they usually just choose one because of brand blindness, or cos it comes in pink or cos the salesman highly recommend it.

3- These are more or less similar as most of them use 1/2.3" backlit cmos in terms of hardware. Every additional feature like gps etc.... = add a bit more.

4- The rest of the sell-points are just software gimmicks... which by the way... Sony totally pwns in this area.

5 - Long zoom and high megapixels in small sensor are not recipe for good image quality

I posted earlier that either one will do cos unless you're a pro-hobbyist, guy with camera geek, pro photographer... you'll be hardpressed to find any difference from the image that they take.

Anyway, I also reckon that you would've read dpreview's travel zoom comparison test right? So you really can't wrong with either SX230HS or P9100.

I apologize if my previous post sounded rude... bad sense of humor tongue.gif

But ya... unfortunately most cameras in the price point don't really differ much from each other and I reckon that if you're just keeping it in auto/press shutter.. there's no real substantially better camera until >$1.5K range.

I suggest watching this ... it really helps in getting sharper better pictures.. and in low light.. and its free.

I don't think there's any other flip screen cams at that price point.

I used a more low tech approach for self portrait with my kids.. I got one of those mirror sticker and stick it infront of the camera.

It sounds like you're quite new to photography so I reckon that a travel zoom compact like Canon SX230HS would be more useful for you.

It's like the jack of all trades. Does everything reasonably well... small, light, good stabilization, big zoom range, decent image and video.

S100 and many higher end compacts are technically "better" but unless you're a photography enthuasiast who nitpicks or print very large prints..... those "better" are moot points for a regular user.

Hope that helps. smile.gif

I'm not located in malaysia but anything reflective would do since u just need to agak agak and let face detection autofocus to do its job. Like some phones have chrome trimmings around the camera so u can see ur face..well.. Same concept.

Hi sifus and gurus,

I need some help. I've been using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 for the past 3 years, and I've been extremely happy with the performance of this camera. However, the camera is now showing signs of wear and tear and it doesn't focus properly when taking videos and it sometimes can't even turn on. Because of that, I'm looking to get another camera.

Is it possible for me to get something similar to the TZ5 around the RM500 - RM1000 range? If no, what is the best camera you would recommend for that budget?

EDIT: I haven't really started looking, but saw a samsung PL120 yesterday, which looked ok. However, reviews don't seem to rate it too highly, and a few friends have discouraged me from buying samsung cameras.
*
I had one of those too smile.gif
and yeah... it's a nice camera.

You could try looking at this http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/q311travelzoomgrouptest/17

The ZS10 in the review is known as the TZ20 in our part of the world... also the direct descendant of your TZ5.

Would like to ask for you and other sifu bout this cam as it's new model, dont want regret later hehe. Cheers~ smile.gif

I think the difference is extra zoom and what not. Frankly speaking, point and shoots are driven mainly by marketing and with a 1 year (or less) product lifecycle, there's really not much substantial difference.
I also bought a HX9V when it was price slashed for the replacement HX10V model.
