Type of camera/lens/accesories :  DSLR
Budget: RM3k+- with kitlens
Your Location:  KL
Preferable brand :  Canon or Nikon
Type of photography u want to do : Mainly for Video, since brother has D90 for photo. Landscape
Any specific models in mind? :  D650 or D60
Any specific features u want? :  Any feature that aids video capturing.

I'm new to DSLRs and looking forward to buy one mainly for videography. Don't really need to be fully user friendly. I have been looking at Canon models, specially the D650 and D60 as I heard quite good reviews on them, but I don't know which to choose between(or even if there is a better one within the budget range that sifus here can recommend laugh.gif )

I've checked on the canon website and there are a few things that the D650 wins over D60, but I'm not sure if it matters. Hope to get some advise biggrin.gif

I think you meant 60D and 650D.

To keep it short... advantage for 60D is the grip is more suitable for bigger hands, top LCD display, bigger viewfinder etc. But that's more for photos.

650D for video can do everything that the 60D does and in addition, can autofocus for video (though its still slow even with the new STM lens so not suitable for running and gunning)

Ah yes, 650D and 60D, sorry about that. Was pretty blur biggrin.gif

What do they stand out from? They are pretty much the same apart from the things you mentioned about the 60D for photography. Or are you saying that the 60D is a good camera for Photo and Video, while the 650D shines on the Video part only by comparing the two?

Also, I heard 60D is launched pretty long ago, which I have no idea when. That kind of concerns me as I have no idea when the 70D(or so) launches biggrin.gif I know it's a bad mentality to have, but is there a (an estimated) release date for the 60D successor?
*
Rumor has it that 70D is going to consolidate both the 60D and 7D models so I think can expect it won't be cheap.

Nevertheless, I think you already know that 550D, 600D, 650D and 60D all offers the same image quality (heck.. the never cameras could even have better jpegs) so the difference between them are just conveniences like swivel screen, viewfinder, top LCD etc. None of these camera body can do something that another cannot do.

If I were to start all over again... with that 3K+ budget.. I'll think of what lens to get first... then only think about body.

In my case..I'll go with a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 + 600D even if one of it is second hand.

Sony RX100. Not selling in Malaysia yet. Haven't played with it yet but from the interweb and reviews.... it looked like a winner.

Hello! Can you all recommend me a camera that can zoom very far ? Hope you guys can help out. =)

Type of camera/lens/accesories :  Compact Camera with Super ZOOM
Budget: RM500 - RM1200++
Your Location:   Seremban, Kuala Lumpur
Preferable brand :  Fujifilm, Nikon, Canon
Type of photography u want to do :
Any specific models in mind? :  Nikon L120, L810, L510, Fujifilm HS30XR
Any specific features u want? :  Zooming up to 21x, good and clear picture quality
*
Don't know superzooms but HS30EXR is supposedly king of the hill now though not at your price range and that ORB issue (google)

QUOTE(SheepMekk @ Jul 13 2012, 05:18 AM)
If that is true, I wouldn't mind choosing between the 650D and 60D if the rumored 70D is selling above 4k(at least with kit lens). If it's around RM3k when it launches with the rumored features, I'll have a Skrillex hairstyle in an instant. However I don't think in the camera world there is a fixed date for model launches  unsure.gif

I was not very sure of that, but the reviews through DigitalRevTV does sort of show the way you mentioned them biggrin.gif  Is it the same for video then? I don't mind the Auto Focus technology cause being around machines I wasn't really a fan of automated features, even car transmissions. Also by any chance, do you know how it will perform compared to the Nikon D5100? I got a friend who has it and it shoots videos pretty well biggrin.gif

The only thing I remember that 650D wins over 600D is the touch screen, other than that I have forgotten cause I just narrowed down between 650D and 60D.

Hmm.. thank you for that advise, maybe I should start researching about the lenses too then. I've only been researching about the body  blush.gif noobish mistake
*
There's really nothing much between Canon and Nikon... one can argue till the cow comes home but at the end of the day, its just which brand's interface and ergonomics that you prefer. I don't shoot video but seems like a lot of folks go either canon, panasonic GH2 or NEX's for video.

Anyway... at the end of the day, getting a 550D or a 7D, a D5100 or D7000 or a A77 won't make your pics, video or low light performance any different but a different lens will.

Any specific features u want? : I do understand i will need wide lense/zom lense for the type of photography i want. do correct me if im wrong. And not to mention a tripod as well.

Basically i just started slr photography as all the while im using compact dsc camera. It gets really annoying as i could not take clear focus of the picture i want.

See the above post...

So... imo.

Canon 600D (cos got flippy screen=less backpain when on tripod and cheaper than 650D) or Nikon D3100/3200 with 18-55mm kit and keep the balance for ultra wide angle len (UWA) like a 2nd hand Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6.

actually I'm seriously considering Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V, LUMIX LX5 or the LUMIX ZS20. they are about the same price as the XZ-1 and S95.  blush.gif you used any one of them?
*
I had a S90 and have a HX9V and XZ-1 now (also have a 60D like you) tongue.gif

S95 is obviously the most pocketable. Basically that's the sell point though king-of-the-hill currently for this category is the uber expensive Sony RX100.

HX9V does AWESOME video but as a stills camera, doesn't shoot RAW and the JPEGs under anything other than best lighting condition smears and generally craps out. The interface/programming of the camera is made for auto modes only... there's a PASM mode but is clunky to use and its a tipu spec as the HX9V doesn't have any aperture blades. Closing of aperture is "simulated" using build-in ND so its either wide open or a couple stops down... nothing in between.

XZ1 on the other hand does royally CRAP video (iphone vid much better) but as a stills camera, very versatile for what it is. The jpegs does suffer from over aggressive noise reduction too (which cannot be turned off in camera) but RAW images are brilliant up to ISO200, takes a hit up to ISO400 which is still useable but its B&W or PP'ing time for anything above.

The lens is AWESOME sharp corner to corner across the focal range and opens up to f1.8-2.5 so in lowlight (shot properly) won't lose to a bigger cameras with kitlens (I'll definately chose this over 12MP m43's with kitlens)

I don't have a LX5 but quite familiar with it. Jpg colors are a kinda bland moody typical panasonic look and the thumb control wheel takes getting used to. Otherwise, the RAW quality is comparable to XZ-1, the lens being a little slower..just a bit and significantly better video quality than the XZ-1 but below the HX9V. Latest firmware update speeds up the operation of the camera quite a bit.

ZS20: never played with it before.

What's shooting "botak"?

I think the 20mm f1.7 is around ~1.3K thereabout and its not bundled with Olympus camera naturally cos its a panasonic lens. tongue.gif

I read some review of pentax-q and fujifilm x100, yea they're very different in both performance and usage
I learned photography back then using fully manual but that's long long time ago :/
and kind of lost with information ever since i start working and have no time for hobby (bear with me for my only digital camera is a panasonic lumix compact camera bought in 2002)

recently playing around with some old junk from my relative (canon S2) and start to pick up from there again
I have to say i would go for X100 (X-10 is a downgrade version although it is a newer model?)  but the only concern is the things mentioned in most review, slow start up and the viewfinder can be dodgy at some point.
Is those issue a major issue?
Is it worth spending 3500-3800 (price that i research from various shop in klang valley) for this camera??
and any recommended shop offering reasonable price in klang valley area?
Again i'm not going all DSLR, just a street camera with better performance and need not interchangeable lens at the mean time (might invest in a dslr if i really really into photography again)
Comment are appreciated, thanks!
Also if there's anything better than X100 do let me know and i will do some research and compare it again.
*
Maybe you could go and have a feel for the camera in the shop. Take a few shots if they let you because obviously its got its appeal and drawbacks at the same time so whether its worth it or not really depend on yourself.

Personally, I prefer a entry dslr + fast lens setup for street . It's a more matured and cost effective platform.

Pros:
- Takes as good a photo as the X100.
- Interchangeable lens (doesn't mean have to go gear crazy with it) so there's option to buy body only and a lens of your preferred focal length (from ur old days)
- Even the most rudimentary model focuses faster and with more certainty than the X100
- Controls and menu systems are more evolved... something like a entry canon 550D has its ergonomics/interface honed and evolved over the past 10 years.
- If you don't the route of a camera nut with flashes, battery grips and huge lens abound, then an entry dslr is not really not that heavy.

Cons:
- It looks like a dslr. doh.gif

In practical terms the ~1/3 stop is quite irrelevant but 24mm could be useful.
YMMV

Tripod's are to your own preference. When in use, the heavier, sturdier tripod and ball head is preferred but when lugging it about....its hateful. So see your own tolerance lo.

Got ur pm..

Check out this thread http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2409384

In short.. just gotta make up your mind on which system (canon, nikon, sony, pentax etc) that you prefer by:

1) Checking out the ergonomics of the camera. Each brand does their interface, grip etc differently.
2) Will you be shooting with your friends? Which system are they using.

Regardless what you choose, even the most basic dslr does a darn good job. Moving up the price ladder just purchases extra conveniences.

Heck most folks won't be able to tell if a picture's taken with a D3100 or a 7D.

Lens however, is much more important than the camera.

I think the standard answer for this is one of those enthuasiast RAW shooting compacts like S100, LX5, XZ-1 etc since you're a dslr shooter.

Most run of the mill ones suffers from lost of details and smearing to compensate for small sensor... among other things. With RAW... at least got fighting chance to recover tongue.gif

NEX-F3.. got flip up screen for self portrait.

Some say C3 is smaller but its just the camera body that's smaller which is USELESS considering how big is the lens. They both take up the same space in the bag.

Been using xz-1 for a year, xz-1 gave me a lot of satisfied photos. My gf wanted a camera and I told her why not use xz-1 I get new hahahha! Evil.

I like the image from xz-1, the colors are quite nice, the wide aperture, quite pocketable, art filters.
Yesterday shooting with sunset as background, I use M, 1/1600, F5.0, ESP metering, with 1/16 flash fired.
What's the normal setting for shooting portrait with bright background?

For the new camera I wanted
1. Better ISO performance, xz-1 photos often looks like painted even with low ISO
2. HD Video recording, xz-1 video is too crappy, soft.
3. Faster autofocus
4. Faster startup and doesn't hang like my xz-1 did.
5. Good jpeg image quality straight out from camera, doesn't fiddle with raw too much

Currently tempted to buy either nex7 or om-d, but not much image quality gain right compare to nex-5n/f3 or ep-3, those are more pocketable but actually none of them can be carry in a pocket xD

Nikon V1 is absolutely must have build-in viewfinder
Panasonic GX1 for fastest and most accurate AF and touch screen for touch focus.
NEX-F3 for everything else.

IBIS is a plus but the E-PM1 sensor is already 3 years ago. Same sensor as the original m43's.

Which lens do you plan on buying?

NEX also got a 18-200mm which is more or less the same as the 14-150mm for m43 wat.

I don't recall there's a 50mm for m43.

Panasonic 14-140mm is a stabilized lens.. you won't be using the IBIS on the Olympus for it also.

Either ways, my personal opinion is that there's no point getting a big lens small camera combo cos its = tak balance and still take up space.

Hi people, Im planning to buy dslr.
To begin with, im not into serious photography in (fact i never own a camera except my crappy phone's), but for next several sem photography is going to be a serious business.
While im totally a newbie to dslr, I still understand the fundamentals of af, iso, shutter time, aperture and other consideration for good image ( mostly thanks to dad's camera experience back in 1996s tongue.gif )
My subjects mostly are image of plants, soil, pest fungi/insect, plant diseases and whatever else agriculture yada yada. While im at it of course, ill start to venture on creative photography as well.
so im stuck with this budget:

D3200 kit (18-55mm) + 50mm f/1.8 D
D3200 body + 50mm f/1.8 G
D5100 kit (18-55mm) + 50mm f1.8 D

so the question is going to be:

- D3200 vs D5100: which is better? High pixel density(24mp -__-) tend to screw up at high ISO, but most of review suggests Nikon somehow managed to negate this issue with D3200. Any experience/comment?
I would love D5100 but the swivel lcd is huge turnoff. im not fan of fancy mechanical parts(I know this going to be the 1st part that will screw up).
- Tight budget here, is it worth it to ditch kit lens (AF, VR, zoom) in favor of AF capable (G) prime 1.8 lens? or I should just get both but at cost of having only D prime lens?

actually i have lots of question but my brain sudednly blur now lol

im going to use large part of study loan for this so slightest mistake is going to considered as misuse and terrible bad purchase. omg sweat.gif
*
Not that familiar with Nikon but as with most current DSLRs and in practical terms, any image quality difference between the 2 is not perceivable with the naked eye.

Since you're shooting mainly agriculture, I reckon the flip screen will actually be a good idea especially when you're shooting tripod mounted at low angles and mucking around with the lighting that's needed for those close up shots.

Speaking of which, the 50mm won't do much good as they typically have a minimum focussing distance of around 45cm. You can't get close enough without using a reverse ring etc.

Why base your decision on something as low cost as a SD card and besides... any class 10 card will do. Don't have to go extreme to save some miliseconds off write and transfer speed.

QUOTE(failed.hashcheck @ Jul 31 2012, 04:08 PM)
hmm.. good point.
just I have to carefully deal with water droplets and learn to be little gentler or else it will snap anytime lol (you know how the haphazardly excessive strength that naturally comes out from agriculture people's hand sweat.gif )

for the distance 100-45 cm seems a sweet spot for the purpose. any closer up to 10:1 i usually just bring the sample to lab for microscope imaging.
*
Let me elaborate, I reckon the 50mm won't be much use because of the 50mm focal length+45cm minimum focal distance means you won't be able to get details on small insects etc without resorting to cropping the image. The small depth of field for such focal length+mfd also won't do much good as very small part of the image is in focus.

Hence a regular 18-55mm could prove more useful since you can get 55mm at a closer 28cm minimum focussing distance.

As for the flip screen...they're not that fragile and besides, you don't necessarily have to use it. Just keep it closed in position = no worries.
