QUOTE(ninja88 @ Mar 7 2012, 09:55 PM)
which one need to be consider first? the lens or the body? which one play the main role in photography?
let's say I want to use Canon EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS as my lens, then, which body I need to consider for this lens?

p/s: i'm newbie..
*
Any would do. It IS the standard aps-c kit lens. Choose by how it feels on your hands and the features (viewfinder, AF systems, ergonomics, fps etc) that you may need since the sensor is the same for 550D, 600D, 60D and 7D.

Hence if you don't need high fps, weather sealing or super AF... it's better to spent the budget difference on lens.

Canon S100 and LX5 better... bigger sensor than nikon's even tinier sensor and shoots RAW if you wanna edit your pics.

Any specific models in mind? :  Canon Power Shot G12,Nikon 1 V1.
Any specific features u want? :  similar to a compact DSLR,takes clear & bright image, can blur out background!?.
*
G12 is small sensor = no blur blur unless u stick the camera to your subject's nose.
Nikon 1 also smallish sensor and slow lens = also no blur blur.
NEX haz biggest sensor = biggest blur blur

Most of those software blur blur "features" are just gimmick.. look damn cacat wan. One glance also can see its fake.

Clear, bright image is just knowing how to use your camera and set proper exposure. For bright bright disco colors... just whack the saturation will do di

Hope that helps smile.gif

All cameras within your price point also has a auto mode. Can't get simpler than that.

General rule of thumb is the more you pay, the more options not to have things automatically you will get.

i am looking for a good DSLR with at least few lenses for me to use for diff occasion, more like a "near complete" package so i dont have to request budget every year.. tongue.gif

thanks!

Company pay or what?

My company veli cheapo wan... the company camera for our admin guy to shoot visitors/events yada yada is just a 500D + kit 18-55 + 430EX speedlite.

Even that works ok good.

Regarding telephoto.. there's less distortion and a more compressed flattering perspective for the subject. Also helps when there's a lot of other things getting in the way.

Is Olympus XZ-1 still a good buy?
My friend is looking for a travel pns with a budget of Rm1000.
Any other better alternatives? How about the LX5?
*
Ya why not.

XZ-1 gooding though best result must shoot RAW and the video mode sucked.
S100 gooding though the lens is not very bright.
LX5 also gooding though zoom range wide but "only" 90mm equivalent at the tele end.
X10 gooding too but kinda thick and that orb issue (which Fuji is supposed to fix with new sensor replacement)

If you find this bag of cash... and its for work related stuff

--> Canon 5D MkIII + 24-105mm L kit

I think it may be possible to squeeze in a speedlite for this as well.

If the above still not convincing enough, then consider that Pete Souza (official White House photographer) photographs Obama, world leaders and historically significant events using the 5D Mk II.

Any specific features u want? : Low light, where my phone camera sucks.

Opinion on each so far:
S100: small, its a canon, color seems dull

XZ-1: colors seems the nicest out of all camera, worried about the smearing that a lot of users complain about, in jpeg.

LX5: the oldest of the bunch

P310: small sensor, but nice F1.8

So hard to choose!
*
Do homework for you tongue.gif

Enthuasiast compact focal length vs aperture table.
user posted image

Don't just look at the widest... see the max aperture throughout common focal length.

All these sensor sweet spot less than ISO200 and more or less tops out (imo) at around ISO400 +/- 1/2 stops... everything else is noise vs details.

Example... If I wanna shoot a portrait of bini/gf/mother/mistress indoors in a restaurant.

XZ-1 - 50mm focal length, f2.0, ISO200.
S100 - 50mm focal length, max aperture f4 means my ISO have to go up to ISO800 to get same shutter speed.
LX5 - 50mm focal length, max aperture f2.7 means my ISO have to go up to ISO400 to get same shutter speed.

About the smearing.. depend on how you look at it. Yes, the XZ-1 jpeg smears but the girls like it as it blurs out blemishes tongue.gif... and most compact smears (my Sony HX9V smears even more).. S90 smears less but the details is not there in the beginning. You can always shoot raw... and if you don't like/use Lightroom.. you can always run that awful bundled raw-editor... turn off Noise Reduction as a preset and then just apply to all your pics = kau tim.

Wow, thanks a lot Sniper! Your comparison really made me understand slightly more about how the two min and max F-number works out. For F2.0 and F1.8 seems a small difference but when zoomed out it seems like a big difference. Your replies made me went to read (and still reading) about why we should shoot portraits at 50mm also.

So what this means is that, when zoomed in, we can't really compare the cameras only based on the ISO where the zx1 and lx5 will be using a lower iso than the canon. And when the camera is not zoomed in, the iso will be around the same?

Why the jpeg smearing thing got stuck in my head is because I will be shooting jpeg 99% of the time. I run Ubuntu at home, so I do not have access to lightroom or the bundled raw editor.
*
If you're interested... read up "exposure triangle"

Anyways, all cameras also have pro's and con's... from the cheapest to the most expensive.

Too bad I don't have my S90 anymore to compare but I just took these shots.. out of camera jpeg with everything on default. P mode and auto ISO summore in case you wanna see how it looked like.... we aim to please.

7D cost cheaper and can boost the lens line-up more with varieties.. biggrin.gif

no Nikon suggestion ka? unsure.gif
*
RM8K body only must be the previous 5D Mk II di.... compared with the Mk III, the Mk II's AF is not gooding and high ISO is good but not tahap dewa dewi.

7D no fullframe goodness and low light is only as good as a 550D.

If I stumble upon a bag of cash.... straightaway take taxi go buy 5D MkIII.

A few post ago.. I posted that my company admin guy's company camera is just a 500D + 18-55 kit + 430ex. Frankly... In the context of this usage pattern... It enuf to getthe job done. Image wise no difference until u go fullframe. Its not like ur go creative and gonna shoot bokeh dreamy portrait of ur lady boss like some bikini model right?

Oh.. and I just came across this vid which should provide a more illustrative example on why telephoto is used for portrait

Since it's a compact camera, depth of field is hardly relevant here. Focus on your baby first (green box)... hold it by half-pressing the shutter.... lepak... make funny faces and when ur baby smiles.... full click.

- Red-eye Reduction
- any other fancy features.

Which camera Brand/Model recommended for me ?

Many Thanks ! biggrin.gif
*
My dua sen is:

Nikon P300/ P310 ... 1/2.3" BSI CMOS and bright f1.8 lens at wide angle is about as good as it gets there.

It's also got a backlighting mode which is useful in those unfinished building with glare coming from the outside and dark inside.

Do note that the best implementation of backlit modes are still Sony's but Cybershot have slow lens and are HOPELESS in indoor conditions. doh.gif

Also... forget about auto-panoramas. It does require some sort of familiarity/training to sweep at a constant rate and if your guys shoot indoor or in less than perfect lighting conditions... the panorama will end up cacat.

Need recommendation for a light system with a 'normal' 50mm view lens.

EVF/LCD doesn't matter as long as sunlight legibility is good.
Would appreciate if anyone list out possible combinations. laugh.gif

Oly EM-5 + 20mm f1.7

Currently the king-of-the-hill tough camera is the Olympus TG-1.

It should take snorkeling depth since its rated up to 12meters but don't take it scuba diving la.

http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/05/08/Ol...-compact-camera

My friends uses the Olympus XZ-1 + PT050 underwater case for scuba but this combination is out of your budget.

The cheapest alternative is the Panasonic FT-3 which is also rated up to 12meters but has less sophisticated sensor (CCD vs backlit cmos) and slower lens compared with the TG-1.

Absolutely cheapest cheapest option will be a Dicapac waterproof bag if you already have a compact camera

Having said that, any camera shooting over glass especially one from the dirty bus window also will suffer.

You want mirrorless issit?

Like that lagi is Sony la... since they're the only one besides Samsung (not so good) and Pentax K (look like colorful lunchbox) that makes aps-c mirrorless.

Anyway... you can always get the external electronic viewfinder for the 5N later on when got budget.
