under normal circumstances when your ima battery is not flat, the internal combustion engine will be cranked up by the ima motor using power from ima batt. however, your 12v must also be in good condition for ima system to initialize and perform the cranking, as the battery control module, motor control module and ecu all powered by the 12v battery prior to the starting of the engine. in other words, even your ima got remaining charge, if your 12v is flat, the car would not start. on the other hand, if your 12v is ok but your ima is flat, the car will crank up using 12v via a regular starter motor instead of ima motor i.e. engine still can be started.
