You guys made it so easy to distinguish between the real and fake ones... how's the fake's performance? Is it obvious? Like those single coat filters?
*
I guess bringing along one of the sifus would really be of great help to distinguish between the real and fake ones ! rclxms.gif

because nowadays b+w made out of brass, it is heavy unlike hoya  laugh.gif  so if the fake one generous enough they can use brass also haha
glass wise you can try compare like this

I read somewhere that some B+W filters were made from alloy for the asian market, not sure if it's true or not coz the brass ones were relatively more expensive and that's the reason B+W came up with the alloy rings instead of the brass ones. IIRC it was dpreview.com

Note about the alloy rings is that over time, the alloy thread 'melts' into the lens thread making it extremely difficult to remove, and only way is to practically destroy the filter to get it removed.

The guy who sold me the lens work in photo shangrli-la...he said Rm90 so lo...But only support 1 camera and 2 lens..Maybe 10 litter somethings.
*
it's a start, start small, coz you'll never know if you gonna give up on this hobby.
unless you plan on going on seriously on this hobby, then suggest you jump to get the digital ones that can hold 3-4 lens, body, flash and accessories. it maybe an overkill for now, but believe me, you may outgrow the small analog box in no time, plus the fact you need to regulate the anolog box every week or so, the digital ones make it so much hassle free

Is it normal for that lens to give out rattling sound during focusing?
*
rattling sound just after focusing means that the VR system is engaged, rattling during focusing, i.e when the lens is moving back and forth means something is kaputs inside......but rattling of the VR shouldn't that loud, loudest i heard is from the 105mm VR due to the large SWM motor inside i guess

What's the recomended FL for portrait, group photos for DX cameras?
I'm undecided between 85mm f1.8D and 50mm f1.4G

I would basically be taking pix from about 10 feet/3m or so

any advise?

Portraiture length for FX is 85mm ~ 135mm. Do the maths for DX.

For group photo, it depends on the number and what "kind" of group photos to be produced, I personally prefer 50mm on FX but that would be half-body only.
*
yeah 50mm - 90mm in DX, that's why I am asking for opinions on using either the 50mm 1.4G or the 85mm 1.8D in DX as basically I would prefer a nice bokeh and as much isolation as possible although its not that important. Setting will be outdoors by the poolside mainly,we hope it doesn't rain on that day!

Your 105 Macro  tongue.gif
Sharp and nice creamy bokeh  tongue.gif

For the 50, I think the 50 1.8G is sharper; Seeing some of the sample photos around, it seems the 1.8G produce much better results. Tempting.....

85 also have new G version for 1.8.
*
ah yes, i did test it out past few days, only thing is that i can only get half maybe 1/4 shot, i may need to do group of maybe 5-6 people, and with the 105mm, i would need to stand 30m away ....haha!

would need it by mid march, so i wouldnt wannna get the 85 1.8g as yet, as i don't really know how it performs

from ur sig u have a 16-85, that is good enough for group photos.
else its not really that hard for u to drag out that lens and set it to the respective 50mm and 85mm lengths and see how it works right...

plus when u say 3m away for portrait is only half the info.
half? 3/4 length? headshot?

again, dragging out ur 16-85 and setting it to see which one works better for u...
*
i did look at the 16-85mm, in fact i was trying it out due CNY gathering and mostly took pics of the kids, 85mm end was fine. I really like the versatility and the IQ of the lens, but may not be that useful.....
thing is the function will be at 7pm onwards, so low light capability is the one i would be looking for, (50mm)85mm f/1.8 vs (50mm)85mm f/5.6...hmmmm, i think you know what i mean tongue.gif

groups shots maybe 5-6 people, mostly i may wanna get full length with occasional headshots and 3/4 length

5-6 ppl with 50mm, and from 3m away...they're going to have to really squeeze tight.
just use ur 16-85 with flash for those group shots better.

for headshots, actual 85mm lens still better...even tho u have to stand further back with DX.
doesnt matter if 50mm is roughly a 75mm field of view blah blah blah, the lens distortion is still of a 50mm.

for the rest, i guess either ur 35mm or 16-85 will do fine.
*
was thinking of using the 1224 for group shots, and put the 85mm on for portrait. i think the UWA perspective would be good in the poolside view. Purpose is to get as much pictures, portraitwaise of bride n groom during the evening dusk lighting, thing is i prob be the only 'photog' there and reception is for SIL, so pressure is on me....haha.....hop i don't just go snapping food pics instead of people..... biggrin.gif

thing is i luv the 85mm bokeh.......decisions,decisions

bokeh is boring,
just get the wide angle, wide angle is fun  brows.gif
*
yeah, was planning to load the 1224 on the D5100, and have the other bokehliciuos lens on the D300s...... tongue.gif
The D5100 doubles up as backup and video too.....or i may just pass it to my niece to snap groups photos blink.gif

hey guys, opinions please smile.gif im still waiting for the 85mm f1.8G. should i continue to wait or should i just get a tamron sp90? this is for a d40

usage: portrait, stage shots, compressed perspective

im also thinking about the tamron 70-200 f2.8. been reading about slow/inaccurate AF on tamron lenses. how bad is it for u guys? i dont mind the AF noise
*
if AF speed is not an issue, then the tamron would do nice, thing about the 85 1.8g is that there isn't any real life feedback test on it, so its kinda gamble if you get it first hand, abathen, since its the 2nd gen 1.8, it will prob be as good if not better than its predecessor

Special Q,

My friend in tight cash flow and ask me to take his 2months old SB700 for RM650.

We do agree that he can claim back the flash if he pay back the same amount at anytime.

I agreed to help and now im with 2 SB700 for now.

1) Tell me what i can do with it.  tongue.gif
2) Rm650 good price right?
*
good price, and you'd probably wanna try strobing, or whatever its called..... rclxm9.gif

Do u rather pay RM2450 for a third hand copy of 105mm 2.8g, no more warranty

or

RM3100 for new copy?
*
if at this price , it must be brand spanking blardy good exe condition.... rclxms.gif
got mine at 2.1k, think its almost a 3years old lens, but condition damn good, very happy with it

advise is if you can test it first before fully committing to getting it, then go ahead, if its well kept, then i think it wont have any issues, remember its a gold ring lens, means its damn hardy and shud be tough even when badly handled

im willing to gor RM1600 for Tokina 100mm macro (for DX body lah)
*
I wouldn't really take kenrockwell's review seriously, rather take it as a pinch of salt

I would rather use photozone as a serious review site, or Tom Hogan's and another would be nikonians.org

as one of 1635 owner, can u please poison me with the lens. looking at the review its quite tempting and worth to have it.
*
errr bean, correct me i'm wrong 16-35mm in FX is the equiv to 12-24mm in DX if mounted on its respective FX/DX body yes? The DX FOV of a 16-35mm is about the same as 18-55mm DX kitlens.... hmm.gif

QUOTE(Tony Stark @ Jan 30 2012, 04:59 PM)
ur question is abit pelik but i assume ur asking this

the 16-35mm on FX equals to 16-35mm FOV

the 16-35mm on DX (needs to x1.5 crop factor) equals to 24-53mm

so if the 12-24 on a DX means its equal to 18-36mm on FX

rclxub.gif
*
actually was wonderng why IrB wanted to get the 16-35mm as he already has the 12-24mm, since he is moving to FX, it actually answers the question which I put up to confuse him..... rclxms.gif

I was thinking more of using something to get a PRE reading on my camera, both white and gray card or device, shooting both raw and jpeg but mostly will be raw for the serious photos

anyone shotting fireworks now, i hear sounds like in a middle of a war zone !!
