I don't think it will work as Cydia may have your 5.0.1 SHSH but I don't believe it saves the APTickets which is required for you to build the custom firmware either via iFaith or redsn0w. You cannot simply try to upgrade to 5.0.1, it has to be via custom firmware.

For iOS 5.0.1, you need to use redsn0w for the iPhone 4.

It's only been 5 days since iOS5.1 is released, how long did it take from 4.33 to 5.0.1 to come out? Or from a tethered JB on 5.0.1 to Corona exploit? More than a couple of months I think (iOS5 was released on October 12 2011 and the Untether came out on 27th December 2011), that's 2.5 months. As for the A5 device, the jailbreak gap from 4.3.3 to 5.0.1 was close to 7 months.

I have been using m2u, HSBC and cimb clicks without any issues.

It shouldn't be a problem especially if both iPhone uses the same Apple ID.

Should be okay. The Apple ID is to sync the apps between devices. If you have different ID, you just need to sync it manually (i.e. change the Apple ID to sync with the necessary Apple ID).

Has happened once or twice on my 4s. Was not as frequent as my iPhone 4. Happened when I installed Winterboard the other day for my 4s and it repsring and then a message saying it's in safe mode etc. Uninstall Winterboard and everything was good.

If you strongly believe that it is factory unlocked then the upgrade must have gone wrong. Upgrade to 5.1 and see if you get the signal back.

More detail please. What tyoe of iphone is it, what is the device firmware etc.

Use iFaith. Once you get the SHSH, follow the guide in the first post (it should be under the downgrade section)

Unlock is not dependant in the firmware version. It depends on the baseband version. What iPhone are you using and what baseband is it on?

When you upgrade the firmware using stock firmware, the baseband will be automatically upgraded as well, that is why if you have an iPhone on a baseband that can be unlocked, you need to upgrade using a custom firmware to preserve the baseband version.

If you are on iPhone 4, and on 4.11.08 baseband version, the only unlock solution is via the sim Interposer method (Gevey etc), I would recommend you contacting bro Wimpykid as he sells the sim for iPhone on that particular baseband.

Ask bro Wimpykid. He sells one of the sim Interposer that can unlock a 4s in 5.0.1

You cannot restore to a firmware version that is no longer signed by Apple.

Added on March 17, 2012, 10:12 pmYou can try BUT majority of people has reported that this will brick the iPhone. The jailbreak process will move some of the system files and if you do the erase all content method, the OS will be confused as it cannot find the system files thus bricking the phone.

Correct. If you brick the iPhone in the process, the only option to revive the iPhone is to restore it on the latest firmware which is 5.1 at the moment.

I believe bro Wimpykid will not be able to help as well. There is no unlock solution for iPhone 4s on 5.1 firmware (can't remember what the baseband version is)

You cannot restore to 5.0.1 if you do not have the SHSH for 5.0.1 saved either in Cydia or TinyUmbrella. In fact, you would have to use the latest version of tinyumbrella to save 5.0.1 SHSH as it wills also save an APTicket which is required for a restore/downgrade/upgrade to 5.0.1

the iPhone 4 can be jailbroken tethered on 5.1 and that is one option. iOS 5.1 has been jailbroken untethered by i0nic but he has not come up with the program to do it yet.

My recommendation is for you to upgrade to 5.1 and jailbreak it tethered OR

Download the latest TinyUmbrella and save the 5.1 SHSH just in case Apple comes out with 5.2 to stop all these exploits that have been discovered by the dev team.

Once an unlock solution is released (software or hardware), make sure you don't update the firmware.

4s on 5.1 cannot be jailbroken as yet.

Download Tinyumbrella and connect your wife's iPhone 4 and press saved SHSH. It will get the 5.1 SHSH from apple. The dev team is working on 5.1 jailbreak so better get the SHSH for 5.1 now just in case apple comes up with 5.1.1 to throw the jailbreakers some problems.

No you do not need to upgrade to 5.1 to get the SHSH.
