Hi guys,

I will post the screens of my MSI afterburner. Keep in mind this temps are AFTER i swapped to user defined software automatic fan control. So the temps i am idling at are lower now as well.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/256/msiafb.png/

Last night i went to play BF3 on 1125 / 1575 no voltage tweaks. I played it for 4.5- 5 hours, and i had no problems. Normally my PC would not survive 3,5h on this settings.
My max temps during that session were: gpu 75c , VRM1 66c , VRM2 59c.

My guess is that we probably have solved my problem by changing the fan control settings to user defined.
The fact that this card is from Club 3D probably have nothing to do with my problem. It is after all an reference card, only thing that is different from (example Asus) will be the sticker on it and maybe some stuff like cables in the package. I'm actually surprised that the manufactures still dare to mount this kind of coolers on high-end cards. It's not only bad cooling but also way to loud. Who wants to sit whole evening next to a "vacuum cleaner" for 500+ euro? My PC is really a quiet machine , or actually it was before this card. Hopefully both the temps and sound will improve with the Arctic Cooler Acelero i have ordered.

Hi guys,

Currently i walked in to some problem.
I upgraded my Catalyst driver to the latest and i wanted to unlock the unofficial over-clock mode in MSI afterburner.
All went well, but after i unlocked it, the MSI afterburner was not memorizing the new settings for the core and memory.
I was thinking that the problem was caused by MSI afterburner but i was wrong. After i searched the Internet i found that the problem was caused by the latest Catalyst driver. They blocked the unofficial over-clock ranges trough the driver. The solution is to install custom Bios for your HD7970. The process is made as easy as possible and is just actually one click operation. Keep in mind this Bios is for reference HD cards only.
After the Bios flash, your MSI afterburner will gain over-clock ranges far beyond the standard 1125 / 1575. You don't even have to touch the CFG file to change to unofficial over-clock mode.

so, what you need to do is:

1. register at http://www.overclock.net/t/1196856/officia...970-owners-club
2. download Tahiti_XT_C3860100_X00_BIOS_Dec20_2011.zip
3. unzip it.
4. runt it.
5. restart your PC.
6. thank Notoxic :>

Yeah i hate the stock fan as well , an horrible thing. The manufacturers should really change something, and put real cooling solutions on cards like this.
Of course i'm aware of few cards that come with better coolers , like Powercolor. But those are hard to get at release.
I'm waiting for Arctic Accelero Xtreme, hope it gets much better then.

Actually in my opinion the reference 7970 is almost a pure rip off if you have no plans to upgrade to water cooling
The card is noisy and unbearable, my pc is 14feet away and its still very audible when i was using the stock fan in a hall enviroment

THe non reference is the way to go for 7970. I think the asus dc2 is cheaper than the Artic cooler Xtreme + reference 7970 card not to mention you need to assemble the artic cooler yourself.

Trifire HD7970s performance is very powerful no doubt, but the lack of games optimization and some drivers issues on trifire really annoys most of the users.

Kevin, do you have any issues with Alan Wake(crash), skyrim(Flickering & low performance) and in BF3 MP(Low perf) using trifire 7970s? just curious...

7970 has problems with crossfire when playing games
i guess for benchmark is not an issue but it is different in games
micro stuttering,
ITs kind of a bad card for crossfire as the drivers are just bad. Many people selling the cards now in the garage perhaps reflective of the true value of the cards. The card is great for benchmarking only and not for its real purpose gaming
Useds are going for around RM1500

oops just saw your post. blush.gif
yes, better avoid CF as AMD's driver is still unstable.
Alan Wake - crashed, i'm stuck on the boat while taking photo.
Skyrim - flickering, but now i'm on MSI special bios so no more flickering issue or at least minimized
BF3 - crashed on startup
Serious Sam 3 - crash
Syndicate - ok
Crysis 2 - ok

eyefinity on 3x 30" is even worse more crashes & BSOD 116

Can't agree more with this. My experience on GTX580 tri-SLI is far far better than tri-CF. I think I'm done with AMD from now.

I guess If I'm about to stick with AMD then just forget about CF or TF. just buy their fastest single card and that should be enough for single display at 1080p. I think high end kepler will not be around anytime soon also. So yeah, just stick with single 7970 at the moment since it can hold its ground pretty well. however, still no news from the green team sad.gif

IF the 680 comes out it would have all the same problems like the 7970. Bad driver, noisy since its stock and slow waterblock supply. Waterblock for 7970 is still in short supply considering the launch date was 2 months already. Driver is the same
Change to 680 i think is not viable if you are using it for games, ME3 is in 2 days, diablo end of q2. I think by diablo launch 7970 should be stable
Nvidia is in a tight squeze to just launch a competitor to the 7970 and i think like AMD do not come up with drivers for it

Actually if you have not upgrade the 580 is would be best

I just read the 7870 review and it is obvious a true winner if compared to 7970 in terms of price, performance & cooling capability. What a great card,it can be OC'ed to be on par with 7970 in some games and only priced at $349. However, there's still NO NEWS from the green team sad.gif.

This special MSI bios allows my trifire 7970 to bench 3DM11 @ 1300 @ 1.29v, although artifacts. Gaming is stable at 1.3v. With Giga stock bios & Asus highest could achieve was 1275 only with whatever voltage.
Thus I think this MSI bios has better vdroop & more stable than the others. Works with any driver version + CAP.
Add: The only drawback is this bios make your card to stay at load clock during idle. But no worries as load clock doesn't mean GPU load 100%
