are these custom ROMs better than the original ICS??
what are the main improvements over the original
*
mainly faster, and more power saving. But there may be bugs introduced by the custom tweaks if the ROM is not stable. Also there are ROMs like AOKP that bake mods into ROMs that extend the functionality. I'm using bigxie's V6 ROM though, mainly because its really close to stock, but with performance optimization.

Best is you just try it yourself smile.gif

or maybe watch this video, you can see some of the mods that are baked into the ROM. Especially settings toggles at the notification area.

Actually there's only one custom ROM with the "Kang" word, and that's AOKP, Android Open Kang Project.

i'm sure alot are like me... but i just wanna ask this.. and not starting any preference war.. but what is your argument of preferring nexus over the note..

i mean when you talk bout note getting ICS but not pure android (still have touch wiz).. but it can be flash to pure ICS theres already clips in youtube testing it out..
so compare the nexus with a flashed pure ICS note.. what else grab u by the nexus.. besides it being a nexus
*
A lot of people keep saying once *any phone* gets ICS, GNex will lose its biggest advantage. Those are the ones who does not understand what a Nexus phone is.

Nexus line is Google's own version of Android phone, but because they are not hardware manufacturer, they pick OEMs to make one for them. Nexus line will be updated with future Android versions, and definitely among the first to get it, because they are getting directly from the source, Google. They will also receive longer support officially, Note gets ICS... Nexus gets Jelly Bean, and the K update, or more. Nexus S and Galaxy S is a prime example.

Also as a reference platform for OEMs to build their phone with, and for apps developers to update their apps to be compatible with the latest iteration of Android. So its quite essential to update the Nexus line first before any other phones.

Another "small" advantage is, custom developers will always support the Nexus line, especially CM and MIUI, as a tribute to Android.

Finally, design. Imo, so far every Nexus's design has been distinct, something special among Android phones. Imo Nexus One is one of the sleekest looking phone, but for some reason its under appreciate at its time. Nexus S, not so much but still it is something different, and now its design has been perfected with the Galaxy Nexus.

guys, i have the iphone 4S BUT i want a bigger screen. Am i gonna make a mistake by buying the galaxy nexus? There's not gonna be much difference in terms of performance right?
*
It won't be a mistake to go with Galaxy Nexus, in fact its probably the best choice for your to jump onto the Android bandwagon.

But just something to consider before making the switch (you should know this already), GNex and iP4S is two very different phone, because they are running two different OS.

They operate differently, some iPhone users seem to not like the way Android works, and see this as a shortcoming, when in fact its just something they are not used to.

morning guys

will be going to Gardens later during lunch hour to buy the new Nexus for me and wife  rclxm9.gif

2 quick questions:
1) does Nexus have native 3G video call support? IE video call over Maxis network NOT skype/facetime
2) can the reminder alarms be set to ring at specific date and time instead of x hours ahead of the event??

thanks in advance for answers
*
1. Nope.

2. Calender app can do this, or just install any 3rd party to do list apps. eg. Remember The Milk, Any.Do smile.gif

My nexus was very hot around the area of camera, front and back when I surf last night. I do not know the weak reception is causing this?

And sorry for this noob question... Can someone lead me to how can I stop the banner ads while playing game? It is irritating... :s

its normal, don't have to worry about that. It's 1.2Ghz dual core running underneath, the heat does not disappear magically. tongue.gif

yea, but I notice the camera has been improved on 4.0.3, I have no problem with the auto focus now.

Hi guys,

A new gnex owner here!

Just want to check, can anyone update their gnex to ICS 4.02? New android user here and wish to root my phone but I do not have the know-how :0
*
just take your time and explore the phone first. smile.gif

there is no rush in getting the update.

its best to get familiar with the phone and OS then only you start thinking about root and stuff.

however if you really want to do it, just download the Toolkit and follow the steps from XDA

i'm getting kinda lost navigating the phone......
transition to android is not as smooth as i would have liked...

1) how to add chinese to the default android keyboard?? can't find chinese as an input option anywhere....
2) why would calender require a second gmail account to be key in?? any idea how to make it stick to the default gmail account??
*
there is no way for the default keyboard to input chinese at the moment.
you can however install a 3rd party keyboard and switch your keyboard when you need chinese input.
There are plenty of keyboards for you to choose from, you can pick the one you like the most. The ones that can do chinese input well so far...

TouchPal

Sogou

Go keyboard

You can also try downloading Swype from here

For calender, I didn't have to log in another G Mail account... there must be something wrong somewhere?

Hi all nexus sifu~~

would like to clarify something from this phone before im decided to buy it...

"Rapid-fire typing
Dozens of improvements to auto-correction and touch recognition make the keyboard feel natural. A new inline spell checker lets you quickly edit misspelled words. It's never been easier to type long emails or messages on your phone." (source taken from nexus website)

How was it?? cause always heard iphone will auto correct the word and bring trouble to user

"Type with your voice
Galaxy Nexus listens. Simply touch the microphone on the keyboard and start talking to write emails, SMS, or any other text—more than 20 languages supported. Text appears in real time, so there’s no waiting for server processing." (source taken from nexus website)

And is this applicable at msia?? anyone use before? is it oki and the accuracy on getting correctly on what we're saying... of course i understand that proper english are needed for sure...

"Quick response
Can’t take a call? Now you can fire off a quick response rather than just ignoring the call: a canned text message reply is just a touch away. You can even create your own quick responses." (source from nexus website)

are this applicable to msia as well? how it works? thanks for explaining to me, noob here XD

thanks in advance for all sifu~~
have a nice weekend
regards
*
1. Absolutely yes. The ICS keyboard is amazing. I'd say one of the best if you prefer to type instead of swype.

2. It works. Accuracy depends on your English (or any other language) accent I guess, but it works.

3. Yes, its applicable.

So in short yes, yes, yes.

I just playing with the type with voice function. It's way better than Iphone4s Siri seriously. Although they dun have a AI like siri. You can even switch the language i.e eng > chinese. THen u can start talking with mandarin
*
There are plenty of 3rd party apps in the market that can mimic the function of Siri, if that's what you want.
Edwin, SpeakToIt Assistant, Vlingo, Iris, Dragon Go (developed by Siri developer, Nuance)

Plus, Google is cooking up their own AI voice action codenamed Majel.

but you are right, the voice input of the ICS is pretty amazing too.

bro can i ask after downloading swype apk, how to install it?
*
what Fallenangelz said. But more detailed, put the apk in your phone, make sure you remember the directory (best if you create a folder specifically for apks). Then access the apk file with a file manager, Inka file manager for example (downloadable from market).

QUOTE(GearX_SaM @ Jan 14 2012, 11:24 AM)
Guys how to know whether my phone is in download mode? Switch off, then switch on while holding + volume. Any screen or wording?
*
you'll see an Android logo with a big ass Start button, and you won't boot into the OS.

that's why I put it as the last option, by right it should support chinese input, but for now its not available yet, because beta is actually not officially available for GNex yet.

Try out TouchPal instead, or any other keyboards that I have listed. They are all easily downloadable from Market.

Plus, there is already the mod version that I've posted earlier, it just doesn't work with Chinese input. It works very well with English.
