in my opinion, piracy sometimes promote the game unintentionally. when people get the game unofficially, after a while they surely will bought the original game. true story

No doubt, but that only applies to potential customers.

Some people just cant be bothered to buy any original.

It's the chicken & egg question but most would agree that the ratio of those who actually purchased the game after playing the pirated version & the one who just moved on are pretty minuscule.

tl;dr no, piracy doesn't promote the game as effective as you think it is.

well, if statistics are gathered, yea, i believe it does promote, as in leading ppl to purchase the game due to various reasons

however, there are quite a few / handful of them who buy the pirated version will not purchase the ori game

and also, one could argue that if no pirated version is available, the game would not be sold anyway...but who knows? main argument = will the game be eventually sold if there's not pirated version?

There are ppl who treat games as consumable.. after they finish the cptn jack version there is no reason for them to buy anymore.. just wait for the next game to pirate they dun even care about the update or content unless there is glaring bugs that made the game unplayable.

The problem is, the games these days are a service, not a product. The relationship between a gamer and a developer do not usually end after the day of the release, as patches, free and paid DLCs are being added to the game. Its an on going relationship until the developer stop providing patches.

Pirates are missing out stuff, especially multiplayer games where most pirate have no access to.

yeah to the point that they jus dun play those games or ended up paying like cases of wow.. but other games they still cptn jack it regardless..
not to mention there are pirated servers for minecraft, wow etc..

those who wan to pirate will pirate.. I dun think those ppl care bout dlc.. some just wan to finish the games know the story.. if dlc is pirated then they play if not then they din care.. coz to them its at the cost of time and bandwidth only..
those who wan to buy will buy eventually..

i had a thought when i was taking a shower. when cs go comes out, if its like portal 2 and gets a code you can activate on pc. just buy the console version of cs go, use the pc code then sell the console game for say rm 100 if cs go is rm 150. you get cs go for 50 bucks.

for portal 2 you can't simply give out the code for pc as both game are tie to one steam/psn account

Lol, like a playtest or demo? =P
I admit I've done that several times to many games already. Like Painkiller complete, Mirror's Edge, Max Payne complete or Medal of Honor.
Bought em on Steam later on when they go on discount.
Could replay em someday. smile.gif

The problem I have and I bet most other Malaysians can agree on when buying original games, is the price.
Earning $50/60 USD is tough. But not when you're earning money in their currency. (Like here in Canada.)
Some of my local friends all laugh and call me silly when I tell them I bought a game for $10 USD (ESPECIALLY MY DAD. LUL, He'll threaten to kill my allowance!).. That's like worth, what, 4 plates of Wan Tan Mee. But here in Canada, $10 is only a A&W Fries and Burger combo. xD

Not trying to bring it off topic, but even though I get quite an income my freelance job dealing in USD, its just really really sad if I buy a game and end up just not playing it coz I disliked. Example, Battlefield 3, I spent $60 USD (The most I've ever spent on a single game too.) on it, and call me a bigot, but I only put in 2 hours in it, and ditched it. Sad.

Or games like Brink where at least I got it at $30, but look at it now. Devs didn't even bother much about it.

I think there should be an awareness abt the effects of piracy in gaming industry. It is hard to persuade die hard pirates to embrace original even if the games are only less than RM30.

i used to be a pirate but then i took an arrow but steam helped me with it's promotion. it's true that being malaysian, it's hard to buy game because it is very pricey to buy with our relatively low income.

one thing though, don't pirate indie games! that's like the most awful thing one can do.

(isn't this thread going off topic now? lol tongue.gif )

I got this from humble bundle, levels are fixed and can be challenging sometimes. Not much replayability but the gfx is cell shaded and good looking. Haven try multiplayer yet.

but publisher can always abuse this DLCs system thingy, they just do not launch the complete game, then launch paid DLCs to milk more money out of the consumer... <_<

i do not know what Steam does differently but i'm hooked to it, Steam made me supports ori games, i have not played any jack sparrow game since i'm involved with Steam... heck Steam even made me buy games that i wont play... tongue.gif

i do agree that the multiplayer and co-op thingy is very good thing to maintain relationship between consumer and publisher but not the DLCs(i would prefer expansion), provided publisher dun shutdown the server so soon...

Added on January 26, 2012, 10:31 amin the end it's still about the price and quality of the game will make consumer supports ori games...
