is automatic transmission a gearbox as well? or maybe it's my misinterpretation due to mandarin/cantonese naming which generally just call it "gearbox oil" regardless it being AT or MT

No.. even with chinese naming, they do differentiate AT from MT since they are both distinctively different oils. Even with chinese they would say 'Auto Gearbox oil' for AT and just 'Gearbox oil' for MT. Whatever language is used, the AT oil is not the same as MT oil.

Totally different. ATF is more towards hydraulic oil grade and viscosity.
Manual gear oil normally from 75w or 80w to 90.

ATF is again different from hydraulic fluid, just mentioned that the viscosity is different from manual gear oil and is lighter and closer like hydraulic fluid..... blush.gif

well myself (and most of the mechanics) just call it "gearbox oil" (or gearbox, "ngar xiong/ya xiang" so to speak), until you need to differenciate it then you just add AT or MT.

obviously ATF already clearly stated it is for AT. gearbox oil on the other hand, i dont recall "gearbox" being distinctly used for MT, as people just add "hand" into gearbox if you want to specify it being MT.

and yes, you and vr2turbo are both corrent that AT oil/fluid and MT oil/fluid are not the same, which i am not saying they are either, i am merely referring to the vague naming of "gearbox oil"

Yes, you can put it this way as long as mention is auto gear box, as manual and auto gear box uses different oil.
Auto transmission is also call an auto gearbox.

Bro. rcracer is also correct as CVT gear box again uses different oil as in CVT gear oil and also DSG boxes....

yeap this too.

so to TS:
if you really want an absolute clear cut answer, better provide your car make/model, and its transmission system, then we can further advise as needed

Yup, correct... nod.gif

Last time, there were cases of CVT gear box when newly launched, they put in ATF then gear box died.... sad.gif

i think myvi normal ATF (or auto gearbox oil laugh.gif ) will do, as it doesn't have special transmission type such as CVT/DSG
