do you mean black colour soil or sand?RCS do stand out with dark background, but you need to add some soil as well if you have moss or plant.

i have another blue pearl mama but the shrimplets is brown...?

the purpose of using soil is to keep stable ph reading. sand/ gravel will give fluctuate reading.

of course you can use gravel. black gravel will be the best since it will show its true color

this is 3rd week i cycle the tank.. still too early? last day i bought 4 cherry and 2 oto but the oto are fine. I do have some moss inside the tank.

updated: saw 1 more skin before sleep yesterday and wake up this morning 1 more cherry MIA sad.gif

cycling a tank will be depend on your nitrogen cycle. if your tank got many beneficial bacteria convert your ammonia,it will be faster your tank to complete cycle. try check your ammonia, nitrate and nitrite. dump in some stem plant to absorb nitrate. moss only consume a bit of nitrate. i learn from hard way. cry.gif

no harm to shrimp. overfeeding probably is the reason it appear inside your tank.

not enough calcium/mineral?
HK shrimp shop put in oyster shell for shrimps to feed on for mineral/calcium.
*
gH is too low. that is why they failed to molt. went to house of crs last weekend. got same advise and bought few thing from there. if we put coral, gh reading will be fluctuated, and it is quite dangerous for our beloved shrimp.

what about your pH reading? too high pH reading will kill em. too low oso kill em. if your pH reading fluctuate oso kill em.

do you use any soil? soil will help to maintain your pH. amazonia is the best.

water hardness also important. too soft not good for them.

by the way, what type of BW fert you use? BW growth?

One malaya produce hundred of larvae, they are so tiny, they can't eat brine shrimps yet, that why need dirty tank with lot of microorganism as food, only then they will morph into shrimplets , that why lot of ppl fail in breeding malaya. I don't have space for another 3~4 ft. if not i will crate a dirty tank.
*
any source for cheap malaya? hehe
