As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

0955: The Champions League draw is scheduled to start at 1100 GMT. It'll be followed by the Europa League last-32 and last-16 draws at 1200 GMT. The first one will concern Chelsea and Arsenal fans, the second Manchester United, Manchester City and Stoke City supporters.

Berbatov fit to face QPR

QUOTE
Dimitar Berbatov is expected to travel to London with his Manchester United teammates this weekend for the Reds' Sunday clash with Queens Park Rangers.

The Bulgarian striker has missed the side's last three games after limping off at half-time of the Reds' Carling Cup defeat against Crystal Palace on 30 November with a foot injury.

Last season's joint top scorer in the Barclays Premier League resumed training seven days ago but failed a late fitness test for last weekend's game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But in a week in which news of injuries (Nemanja Vidic) and illness (Darren Fletcher) have dominated the United headlines, Sir Alex was able to deliver some good news at his Friday morning press conference.

"Berbatov's fit," he said. "Rafael is back training as well. Darron Gibson got a knock last night [for the Reserves]. He was taken off as a precaution but he should be okay."

The Reds travel to Queens Park Rangers knowing it won't be easy to come away with victory. After all, only two sides have won at Loftus Road this season, with the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle and Aston Villa all failing to pick up three points.

Sir Alex, however, is confident.

"We always enjoy going to Queens Park Rangers," he said. "It's always a good atmosphere. We have a good record there and I hope we can continue that.

"They've done well and given themselves a chance of staying in the league by investing. It's going meant we had about 6,000 fans.

"We have a good record there and I hope we can continue that. They've done well and given themselves a chance of staying in the league by investing and bringing in a few players. It's going to be a hard game.

"Queens Park Rangers have invested the right way. Neil Warnock realised that when you get into the Premier League you need big players. That gives them a better chance because it’s an unremitting league in terms of the demands, particularly for teams coming out of the Championship.

"Strangely, Norwich, Swansea and QPR [all the promoted teams] have done well and adapted to the demands of the league. The rest test, though, is in the second half of the season."

Depending on the lineups, I don't think it is that tough of a draw. Then again, Ajax is no pushovers. An interesting meet up and a chance to see whether Eriksen

could perform in big games (in English soil). If vs. Bilbao, could watch Martinez. tongue.gif

"It's easier now it's out in the open. That was the big decision he had to make. We were trying to address the confidentiality part of it in a different way by talking about a virus but that was down to protecting Darren. He got to the position, particularly in Scotland, where there was more delving into why we kept talking about a virus, and I think he felt a bit uncomfortable about it. So he decided to make it public."

the truth....we never leave one of our own alone. notworthy.gif

QUOTE
Sir Alex was asked if another midfield absentee means he will be forced into making a signing during the January transfer window.

"Not necessarily," he replied. "I don’t why people keep going on about that [buying in January]. It’s never been a route we’ve taken consistently unless a player that we’ve been interested in appears but there is no sign of that at the moment. So therefore it’s not always suitable to us.
QUOTE
"If you look at the options we have [in midfield] - [Phil] Jones has played a few games there, Ryan [Giggs] obviously can play there too and Ji [-sung Park] is capable of playing there too. There are maybe one or two other options - Darron Gibson is an option. He had an early season injury, but he has experience needed to play in central midfield. The options are not too bad.

"Young [Paul] Pogba is an option. He’s progressing very well. It’s one of these situations – unless there is a player we’ve been interested in for a while appears and you can get him, then there isn’t much point in bringing an individual in because it gives you another player.

"Pogba is a possibility. He’s a big strong lad, a good athlete. He's improving and developing well.

"Since he’s come to the club we’ve seen the progress he’s made and in terms of that youth team we had last year, six of them have all had a bit of experience of the first team this year. Of course, young [Ryan] Tunnicliffe is another member – he’s over at Peterborough – he’s playing Championship football at 18 years of age, so he’s doing very well.

"It’s a good group that – it’s turned out very well. Pogba physically is better than the rest of that group, maybe apart from Zeki Fryers who is a very good athlete."

For QPR game, Norwich and Swansea had already gives us problems b4, so I think QPR will do the same. EPL just getting tougher, and got more unexpected too.

'Matt Busby summed it up perfectly; you don't need to chase money at a club like Manchester United, it will eventually find you. If you're good enough, you will earn money and become rich playing for United, there's no doubt about it.

Did you guys see keane's comment on saf? What a *******, true you've been a great and awesome servant to united, but to break and shatter your reputation like that is just stupid. Eventho if saf is wrong that's not the way to go public about it. Really disappointed.

I dun mind getting beaten cos we'll have extra revenue

but I'm worried with more injury problem

i'm content with playing youngsters in europa
*
for revenue thing, certainly not. if beaten in round of 16, you'll just get income from 1 home match (ticketing etc), prize money and few extra tv revenue *cmiiw*

but let's say if you can reach europa league final, you go through 4 stages before final, that means you'll get revenue from 4 home matches and prize money from each stage, plus tv revenue. that'll surely be much higher than the first case. but that's a big IF we will reach final.

most of us surely will be waiting to see what SAF will do in this tournament, but if we can get a success here with youngsters gain a lot of playing time, that'll be really beneficial for us since we have a lot of youngsters that really need it.

1-0 2-1 3-1, who cares? The important things our midfield is going to give a good performance and well linked with attacking

yea, i saw that, but that's normal for me, was shocking for a while but looking back through their history, that's normal, maybe now he's suffering a lot from the bad managerial performance and in condition that made him couldn't handle the news well

we should attack from the left more (to balance up both flanks)...they swarm the right side, Valencia can't do anything aside from the first minute assist

great team performance. Carrick solo run is superb

somebody must said " it just QPR" but the truth is that we might make ourselves harder or flopped

salute the mentality of the lads

Jones & Evans definitely deserve a goal

fuhh Jones with his rampaging runs...he will be bulldozing oppositions to rubble when he got more experience in the future...and then Carrick showed that he can do that as well, plus scoring lulz

defense was solid apart from Evra (shaky imo)...while Welbeck definitely need more games (he always over think when he got the ball)

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson: "We should have put the game to bed after about half an hour. It was a good team performance; we played some good football and will take a 2-0 win away from home. We have been a bit sparse in terms of goals scored recently but we won 4-1 last week and scored two today, some would say we should have scored more."

put jones behind ando clev, valencia stay wide right nani coming inside from left with rooney in center > i keep waiting for that

i don't think ando clev is better than jones carrick, at least defensively, and yea certainly carrick works better with kind of player like phil jones and fletch.

well anyway good points for us tonight, clear 2-0 in QPR home is a great result.

Gaitán, who can play as an attacking midfielder or left-sided forward, impressed against Manchester United during Benfica’s Champions League group stage encounters with Sir Alex Ferguson’s team earlier this season, and his arrival at Old Trafford next summer would help fill the void left by Paul Scholes’s retirement last May.

looks like this player can also fill in giggs role on the left giving us more options there.

I doubt it - he doesn't seem like the type who will stand behind the keeper. He's more like Rooney - tracking the player with the ball, and when he has it starts to bombard forward with his mazy runs.

He seems to be the type of player that willing to play anywhere on the field like JOS / Valencia if asked to, so I think training him in a special position will only limit his potential as of now

Let's see which position suits him more for at least a season or two smile.gif

i think Gaitan's rumour have a substance.. but perhaps summer addition, not in the next month.. we have a plenty of options for his position (AM /LF).

good win @QPR. good passing game on first half. special mention for Evans. he did really well. hopefully he'll improve steadily and keeping this momentum. he is integral part of our defensive dept ATM. Ferdinand always a suspect (fitness wise), Vidic is out for a season, while Jones / Smalling playing their trade at CM /RB.

I have to say Carrick had a wonderful game. I've hardly ever seen him bring the ball up on his own taht much in the years that he's been at the club. He's always been a deep lying midfielder spraying the passes around. It's good to see him stepping up. We need the penetration from midfield and it's great that Carrick is providing it. I think he's catching opponents by surprise =P

Opponents: Just stand your ground, Carrick won't dribble past us. He'll just pass the ball around.
Carrick: Bye bye boys!

we will need such a player incase giggs decides to call it a day at the end of this season, decide to play an even lesser bit part role next season.

Jones=Hargreaves replacement? Hoho.
If he can improve further his passing game and become more involved in the build up play, he's gonna be one good box to box midfielder. He's doing a very good job considering he's a defender, but I wouldn't put him ahead of Ando, Carrick and Cleverley once they're back. Wonder what SAF have in mind for him in the future.

exactly, imo that's the nearest comparison i could ever think with hargo has more technical ability and jones is better physically. I expect him to win a CM/DM place in england starting eleven in euro 2012.

yea, but i doubt Capello will play them together biggrin.gif though I'd rather see Jones play instead of Parker, Barry and Carrick can swap place, but looking at condition at the moment carrick should be put ahead of barry *imo* but there are still many good players compete in there, england still has wilshere that is expected to be recovered from injury for second half of the season, lampard, gerrard etc *don't forget about hargo, mancini says he might have a chance play when toure is away for ANC biggrin.gif*

There are some absolute retards dwelling in redcafe. Their blind worship of Roy Keane even over SAF is frightening IMO. Some even want him to be our youth coach FFS. Roy Keane was a great player for United. Roy Keane the person.....not so much.

hmm.gif Not that bad. Though I propose a 4-3-3 formation with Smalling as right back, and Young, Rooney and Welbeck as our three front men.
Theoretically, if we are to put such formation week in week out for the whole season, we might even avoid the relegation battle.

If he does it week in, week out..he might stand a chance. Knowing Don Fabio..is going to be the usual suspects, ie, Wilshere, Gerrard (if they are fit), Barry, Parker..or maybe Lampard.

Yeah, I think England has enough slot already in center midfield, Fabio might prefer to bring the likes of Smalling, Jones or maybe Micah Richard as backup to Rio Terry, Glen Johnson

for Capello, Barry probably definite starter. Lampard, Milner, Wilshere (if fit) and Gerrard (if fit) are top options. Parker, Carrick and perhaps Jones will be fight for remaining places.

i believe Carrick will still on plane if even all those names are fit. but i dont mind if Carrick get snub..

Shock Champions League lifeline for United?

QUOTE
Manchester United could be given a sensational Champions League lifeline at the expense of their conquerors Basel.

It has been revealed that Fifa sanctions over Swiss club FC Sion could mean Sir Alex Ferguson’s team are reinstated.

Fifa could ban all Swiss teams from football if under the sanctions, though the Old Trafford club aren’t banking on it.

"We are not holding our breath over this. It does seem a very long shot,” a Manchester United insider said in the Sunday Express.

This comes about after FC Sion were placed under a transfer embargo over the signing of Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary.

In spite of this, Sion then signed a further six players in the summer, leading them to be punished by UEFA and kicked out of the Europa League after qualifying at the expense of Celtic.

This expulsion lead to the Scottish club being given a place in the group stages, though they have since been eliminated again.

The Swiss FA did not enforce the ban that was placed on the club and so Fifa have now warned them to do so by January 13 or face suspension.

The suspension would mean the removal of FC Basel and could lead to Manchester United being given their place in the last 16 tie against Bayern Munich.

Basel officials are thought to have already accompanied Swiss FA officials to talks with Fifa over the ban.

Basel vice-president Bernhard Heusler does not feel the suspension will actually be handed out and a solution will be found.

“I am confident that we will play Bayern Munich but I take the threat very seriously,” he said.

Or is that somehow pushed aside since you know, it won't help him?

Funny how Liverpool are blaming it all on Evra. Classless.

That #lfc statement is a little bit Father Ted, sadly. Surprised it doesn't have subliminal adverts on the side flashing "not a racist".

let them be...all these arguments that FA is biased, bla bla bla leads to nothing
it aint going to change the outcome, and it's certainly not going to change how they see Man Utd as a whole
they can talk, argue and condemn till the cow comes home and still at the end of the day - Suarez is charged by FA regardless of whether he is a racist, or whether he said the word or not
period

Hahahaha exactly what i was thinking. "Innocent till proven guilty" my foot. When proven guilty, says FA is under SAF la, FA favours MU la, FA hates Liverpool la. If indeed not proven guilty, Im sure the mentality is "Ha! See, he is not racist, Evra is a joke!". Either way, there wont be a good word from them, indeed a bunch of hypocrites. And yet still say we are crybabies, who is the one crying so much in their thread now rolleyes.gif

Now even wanna bring out Roy Keane issue out. Roy keane not enough punishment is it? Fine, punish him more la. Ban him even more, 80 games also i dont mind laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

And i seriously cant believe such statement can come out from Liverpool. If they want to defend Suarez till they die, thats their right and as a club that is what they should do. But to actually ask FA to fine Evra too? What kind of club asks FA to punish other players? Thank God we never release an official statement asking FA to hang Suarez rolleyes.gif

PS: im assuming Suarez's ban starts tumoro so here's their run of fixtures:

Wigan Athletic v Liverpool
Liverpool v Blackburn Rovers
Liverpool v Newcastle United
Manchester City v Liverpool
Liverpool v Oldham Athletic Anfield
Manchester City v Liverpool
Liverpool v Stoke City
Bolton Wanderers v Liverpool
Liverpool v Manchester City
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Liverpool
Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur
Manchester United v Liverpool

That would mean Suarez will be back in time to play us, plus City and Tottenham before that too . if indeed FA is favouring us with the length of ban and the timing etc, they must be one hell of a dumb commmittee laugh.gif

"Mr Suarez has the right to appeal the decision of the Independent Regulatory Commission to an Appeal Board. An appeal must be lodged within 14 days of the date of the written reasons for the decision.

"The penalty is suspended until after the outcome of any appeal, or the time for appealing expires, or should Mr Suarez decide not to appeal. The reason for this is to ensure that the penalty does not take effect before any appeal so that Mr Suarez has an effective right of appeal."

Source: From soccernet.com

It all depends on whether they want to appeal or not. If they want to appeal then the ban will start later. If not, it will start with Wigan match.

I believe the 3 options for Suarez are:

1) He appeals, ban commence after appeal outcome
2) No decision from Suarez, ban commence after 14 days.
3) Suarez decides not to appeal, ban commence immediately.

Must admit. 8 games does seem a little harsh, but then again, when the verdict is coming out the mouths of those well paid fat buggers sitting in the FA, its no big surprise. Whatever happened to the innocent till proven guilty stance all the Pool fans seemed to be taking prior to the decision? Now that they've decided they can't seem to accept it. yea, call Evra what you want, but if I'm being subject to racist chants, especially in such an emotionally intense match, I'm gonna blow up.

Really comes to prove their class. Pointing the finger at the victim instead of the jury. Shame on them.

I always expect arguement and fighting between both clubs. For the time pass, manu also fight with arsenal, while also with liverpool. This consider a healthy competation. Even Evra never really admitted after that, so does Man U players hear nothing. Case had being quiet a while. Suddenly FA make mess on it. I don't blame Man U on this, bcoz I consider we both always fighting. But FA action is like put a full stop on this fighting. No fun lar.......... Players are profesional, they are highly emotion during games. But after that, they can be friends or team mate in national team.
So conclusion, FA mess things around.

Guess the FA really wanted to stamp down their authority. Its become their responsibility to deter racism in the league, especially one thats so culturally diverse and viewed all over the world. Fact that the incident happened in such a high profile match didnt help either.

victim should be EPL itself. FA can make decision like this, you can expect some funny thing will happen in the future.
Both also foreign players, one is full black one is half black. One complain and one hit back. One stop complain and one keep quiet, then suddenly some one come and say hey u are wrong at one side.
Such fighting between Man U or Liverpool is nothing, we had been fighting since long long time ago. Just suddenly ppl come by and stop the fun.

Manchester United refer City to the FA in dispute over Cup tickets
Manchester City have said that the short allocation of tickets is because of logistical and security issues. Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian

Manchester United have asked the Football Association to intervene after becoming embroiled in a ticket row with Manchester City that demonstrates the growing scale of rivalry between the two clubs competing at the top of English football.

United want the FA to take up their case after learning that City are prepared to make only 5,400-5,800 seats available to supporters of Sir Alex Ferguson's team for the FA Cup third-round tie at the Etihad Stadium on 8 January.

Just like Rooney swearing case last season.. FA just banned one player to show their power.. others swear no problem no action.. So fans got no one to blame but the player himself for involve in such case esp in high profile games... because everything is blown out of proportion.. the FA issued directive to both club to keep quiet on this racist case that why u see SAF just keep quiet but that KD keep on commenting on it maybe lead to increase banned...

FA like to show their power and their determination in eliminating racist in english football.. so that why u can see such banned been handed out only on high profile players and games.. the rest will be ignored as usual...

I never thought 8 matches ban for racial remark is excessive, he should be punished more.

lmao, Suarez's ban=City lifting the BPL trophy? what, only his team can beat City? even if that's real, then City deserve the crown coz they are THAT strong, and there's nothing to do with Suarez's team

again, a non Europe bound team laughing at a Europe bound team...well its just like the infamous quote: you as a husband cheer for another man who gave ur wife an orgasm because you couldn't do it?

Pool fans, entertaining bunch. So, now they are implying that Evra is a crybaby? Furthermore, they are saying with Suarez's ban that City will win the league? So in a way they are saying that without Suarez they can't win against City? Like we care eh?

One man team after all eh? Pool can go to hell then. They are now nothing but a midtable team but with cash. They hate us so much that even Gerrard performed that 'brilliant' pass to Drogba. LOL.

so every punishment handed out to us is GODLY written law soo freaking right, but when it comes to other teams we bought the ruling panel, we bought the refs, one sided, were cry babies and etc etc ehh...come to think of it you liverpool fans are going circle dont you think.just for on try digging up on wch camp has abided the ethcis and stayed silent and allowed the ruling body to carry the investigation.

but i guess my post here will still be labelled as trolling useless etc since i support man utd and fck ALL the pool are right on everything.

well he is found guilty nothing much to say, a for terry's case united didnt even say anything on that even tho one of our players has blood relation to the victim but still we didnt treat Chelsea or terry any different.what ever the judgement/proceedings is up to the ruling body and berat ke tdk ke we wont say anything.so try learn on that a bit.

okay i think that's enough for them guys, just focus on our team now, such a waste of time respond to their comment, maybe they're just loser supporter, they might not represent liverpool fans as a whole, i have some friends who are true liverpool fans *and have functioned brain indeed* and they admit ban should very much be given to suarez and nothing wrong about that. i was a bit shocked when I saw what happens in LFC thread in LYN about the case.

tonight we're gonna play against fulham, and City will face Stoke, can't wait too see how Stoke will play their game against City, really hope they can cause some trouble. so jones carrick partnership again tonite? biggrin.gif

If it's not broken, why fix it? So, Carrick and Jones partnership tonight. We need to apply more pressure to City. Nani, Valencia and Rooney are the suspects to start as well. I have a feeling that Hernandez might start too.

Berba might get some playtime.

8 matches ban, the best club in the world already complain and say we buy FA. Can't imagine if we so lucky get the spot for UCL qualify, they say us buy FIFA too? whistling.gif

For tonight match, i think the 1st eleven remain the same. Even Ferguson want to change, Park/ Giggs will replace Carrick/Jones and Young replace Nani/Valencia and other position remain unchange nod.gif

Can't blame them for going mental over the decision. One man team. There goes their hope of getting that Europa League spot unless Carroll steps up. Hoofball..

Play the usual side tonite. Hope Jones will impress again playing in the middle of the field.

Wonder if Rio will play tonight, but we didn't have much option back in CB rite now unless sacrificing Carrick-Jones partnership in the middle. I expect line-up won't be the same like previous matches.

Craven Cottage is a tough ground to visit. Hope we do well there.

next time UMNO BN or any politician should declare themselves as fan of Liverpool and "doing some charities or campaigns against racism". so if one day they are caught to say racial remark, they still have some people who still support them, sang them YNWA doh.gif what a fallacy and hypocrisy.

Uruguay captain slams Evra

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez's Uruguay team-mates have leapt to his defence over his eight-match suspension in England for a racist remark against Manchester United's Patrice Evra.

They said people in Uruguay, where a large percentage of the population is black or of mixed race, were not racist and used terms such as 'negro' in an affectionate manner or as nicknames.  "I can't believe it. They're making a big mistake. It's obvious that in England there's a racism problem they're trying to eradicate, and that's good, but this sentence has no solid arguments," Uruguay captain Diego Lugano (pictured with Suarez) said.  "Luis is a victim. I can't understand how a player like Evra can do this. He's breaking all the codes of football. We all know what kind of person Luis is and the values he has," the Paris St Germain defender wrote on his personal website.  The English FA suspended Suarez for eight matches and fined him £40,000 pounds racially abusing Evra during a Premier League match at Anfield in October, saying he used "insulting words" in a reference to the French international's colour.  Lazio winger Alvaro Gonzalez, who won the Copa America with Uruguay in Argentina in July, said: "All of us who know Luis, we know that if he made this remark it wasn't (meant to be) insulting.  "We Uruguayans, and more so in football, use terms that can be wrongly interpreted by people from other places...it's not a reason to call a Uruguayan a racist," he was quoted as saying by the Montevideo newspaper El Pais.  Gonzalez said Uruguay had a high percentage of people of African descent and that "Uruguayans often call friends 'negro' affectionately".  "Maybe we end up paying for entering other, perhaps more closed cultures and which surely have discriminated against Evra at some moment for him to feel attacked in this situation."  Former Uruguay star and Brighton and Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet said: "The ban is incredible, shocking, it's disproportionate. I back Luis to death.  "Things have happened before with Evra. He is not a saint. He is a controversial player. I don't know in which world we are going to live in from now on people. People will accuse each other of anything."

Really not wanna continue on Suarez ban, but...

To Uruguay captain : The word might not be offensive in your country, but it is offensive in England where Suarez currently play. You gotta follow the local law when you are in another country, is that hard to understand?

Another saying that I truly believe and applies in this case is "ignorance is not an excuse".it probably isn't too big of an issue in the first place... Had both him and Evra calmed down after the match and he approached Evra and explained his meaning ie. He meant it in a friendly south american meaning and apologize to evra about the misunderstanding, im sure both parties can see it as just a salah faham and nothing to it.

But anyway enough of this issue. Him getting suspended really have no benefits to Man Utd anyway. There's a match going on soon! Too bad im actually traveling by plane at such unholy hour (7am local time) and gonna miss the game sad.gif checking the livescore once touch down i guess.

I dont want to discuss about this issue anymore. The stupidity of Liverpool FC coming out with that reaction statement just show how classless they are. I even wonder when did Evra admitted that he abused Suarez with the "South American' insult? AFAIK, only Suarez admitted that he used that N word back then and he said that it was nothing back in his country. The judgement was passed not because he is a racist. No one is claiming that he is a racist. This was caused by the chain reactions of statements that kept on released by their club and the player himself which leads to this.

AFAIK, our club kept quiet except for one part whereby Fergie said Liverpool FC kept on saying things this and that to sway the committee's views. The funny part is, those Liverpool faithfuls were saying that innocent till proven guilty. First of all, he is FOUND guilty for using the N word, not because he is a racist. Again, I would like reiterate the stupidity of the club and its fans, whereby the laws in BPL specifically said that the use of abusive words are deemed to be punished. He is CHARGED for that. Dont be such a stupid ignorant fecker by saying "this I dont know, I came from an another space .. bla bla bla..."

The best part is, they wanted for Evra to be charged for misconduct? Evra has never played that racist card. The case with Finnan was reported by a fan that read the lips of Finnan. The case with Chelsea was reported by Mike Phelan and other United staff. Evra kept quiet and put his head down. He was even fined and banned for 4 matches for that alone. Elsewhere, those stupid ignorant feckers that their player is no saint at all. Controversial handball during WC which was even highlighted by their own faithfuls. They called him a cheater even before he joined them. That biting incident with the opponents players during his time in Ajax. And even some issues with his teammates from the said teams. Like I said, stupidity at their best.

Liverpool has just showed the world how classless they are despite being a club with 'color'ful history.

Fulham have about 20 players back each time. Very hard to get through. They defend really well. And they're fast.. annoying.

that was one of the best first half performance from United shocking.gif

clamping down all over the field, and Nani+Valencia on the right is just brutal for Fulham sweat.gif

viNcee.. victims. Always play that card them. laugh.gif

Kenny - "Whoever is the guilty party - the person who said it or the accuser - [should] get their due punishment."

Sing a different tune now. And I don't understand why the accuser=Evra should get the punishment, since you know Suarez admit it himself he calls him 'negrito'. Easy to understand why Evra was mad.

Valencia seems to have found back his confidence to bulldoze through. And Nani have got his form back. Let's hope Young will do the same as well. Not really that effective out on the left lately. Hopefully Rooney scores to build up his confidence and keep that streak going.

That is just plain stupid.

Move on with the match, I do think that Evans is lucky to escape with that challenge on Dembele. That said, so was Dempsey on Jones.

We played great and our wingers are giving their defenders nightmares. Lets hope for the team to score a couple of more goals to close the GD gap before settling down.

Last but not least, Giggsy's record is still intact!!! icon_idea.gif

You clearly misunderstood him. It was more of a morale win as well considering our 2-2 results against them last season. Or was it 1-1?

Most important thing of all, we are definitely applying pressure to the league leaders.

Only watched the final 10 minutes - worth it not to miss Berbatov's goal.

Giggs - 22nd season and still scoring every season.

And how's Lindegaard? Saw him made several saves, yet another clean sheet for him. Great for us.

incredible goal by rooney, could see that he was frustrated that he missed 2 earlier chances but managed to redeem himself. nani as usual was our MOTM today, great vision and great header. anyways, who else agrees that lindegaard should be our no. 1? not dismissing de gea but i think anders is better in experience as well as his other gk skills

Anders is good, no doubt.

But if you could notice very well, De Gea seems to have that extra talent on initiating fast counter attacks. That and his kicks/throws always seem to be on target. He's young, I know, but United should give him as much playtime as we could. For him to be experienced enough, part of his learning syllabus.

That said, it is very wise of SAF to rotate between him and Anders. I can see both of them are satisfied with their roles.

Lindegaard looks a lot more solid and commanding in goal compared to De Gea. Probably due to his physique and size. Don't really have a preference on who should be our no. 1 keeper. Leave it to Sir Alex to decide biggrin.gif

MU had a bad record in Cottage, last time draw and before that 3-4 lost I think. This is a great victory in West London.

On another note, just when the injury list is easing up, now two players got injured, hope they are minor. But Jones definitely won't be played on boxing day because of the concussion.

Anyways, I suspect every time Lindengaard plays well, DDG bantering will imminently comes here in this thread laugh.gif

Agreed. De Gea's distribution and throwing seems to be much better while Lindegaard seems to prefer kicking the ball high and far down the field. Both have their strengths and roles to play smile.gif

degea/anders...i think both sit on the same shelf.

i would likened our gk now with the pairing of rio/vida.one is the rough one is the smooth.degea smooth, anders rough and more presence since he is big.too bad both cant play at the same time.so nothing much between them and all good things for both.

yeah..Craven Cottage really hard ground for united..really impressive to see team played really well at there..last season we drew 2-2 after leading 2-1 before nani miss penalty and before that i think we lost from rooney and scholes red card..they created many chances and scores as well... thumbup.gif

2010 : 2-2
2009 : 3-0
2008 : 2-0

Seasons prior to that were either wins or draw smile.gif I think it's harder to forgot the losses than to remember the wins though, especially the 3-0 game

yeah..but i also saw anders distributed well especially in 1st half..but as for me both are 1st keeper..can hah?? laugh.gif

QUOTE(fssen @ Dec 22 2011, 06:04 AM)
incredible goal by rooney, could see that he was frustrated that he missed 2 earlier chances but managed to redeem himself. nani as usual was our MOTM today, great vision and great header. anyways, who else agrees that lindegaard should be our no. 1? not dismissing de gea but i think anders is better in experience as well as his other gk skills
*
In terms of playing experience, they are about on par. Anders only started playing regularly at the same time almost as De Gea started his career as first choice for A.Madrid. The only experience he has over De Gea is that he's older but De Gea played in a tougher league arguably.

No doubt that Lindegaard is very good, that's why SAF is giving him plenty of games for a backup GK. We need him to stay sharp since you never know what might happen knowing our luck with injuries(two tonight!). He needs that experience anyways considering he doesn't have that much experience himself, at the top level especially. But should anything happen to De Gea(form, injuries, extended break etc), we know we have a very good #2 who could have been the #1 himself. If it stays like this, I can't see him staying for long. He's too good to be our #2.

Unfortunately for him we have De Gea as our #1 and it won't change anytime soon considering how good he's been. He's not perfect, but we know that considering how young he is. Seeing how young he is, and he's already this good, it's best that we just stick with him for him to grow into the side. He's already good, and we're expecting him to improve further in terms of his experience(27+ only they are in their prime, and he's only 21?), ability and how comfortable he is with the team and vice versa. It will only get better from here on out. But there will be a few bumps here and there.

Nani is racking in both goals and assists in the same game now, hopefully he finally found the balance between both, then he will be unstoppable

Salute Berbatov for that classy finish.. But his future at United remains dark.. I hope he stays on..

great result. Fulham are our bogey team. not every week we can thumping a good team like this.

but our defending in 2nd are poor (esp Evra). its amazing we didnt concede. unluckily we lost another 2 players (and 3 counting Rio). 2 home games next, 'kind' fixtures for hectic december, a chance to maintain pressure to City..

A terrific win! We have always struggle at Craven Cottage. Scoring 5 and keeping a clean sheet, wonderful. Btw, will Jones start next game. This guy already a must in every game!

I know the referee is following the FIFA guidelines, but in that situation how could the referee decide to send him off?

The keeper was in a middle of a game and was suddenly attacked, of course he retaliated. It's not like he assaulted the fan Cantona style.

Hope the game will be replayed without the suspension to the keeper and not given as a loss to AZ.

I don't think the keeper should have continued to kick the fan. He should have just walked away after he dodged the idiot's attack. Hence, I don't blame the ref for sending him off.

I see they are now saying our thread should be reported because it does not make sense HAHAHAHA. That mad.

No problem for Sir Alex
QUOTE

Sir Alex has no issue with enjoying the luxury of having two top-class goalkeepers competing for a starting spot.

David De Gea has settled well into life in England since his summer move from Atletico Madrid, impressing sufficiently to earn the ManUtd.com Player of the Month award for November.

After the young Spaniard kept a clean sheet at QPR last weekend, Anders Lindegaard came into the team for the 5-0 romp at Fulham to extend his run of shut-outs in the Barclays Premier League this term to four.

Indeed, the Denmark international has only been beaten once, in the 1-1 draw against Benfica, in all of his six matches this term.

When asked by MUTV if having two quality keepers is a nice problem to have, Sir Alex replied: "It’s not a problem because I think Anders has that little bit more experience. I felt his was the right time to change and we’re going to do that with David.

"He’s only 20 years of age and is going to be a fantastic goalkeeper, there’s absolutely no doubt about that. Having Anders as a back-up in terms of giving the lad a break at the right time, is proving its worth. Anders is an outstanding goalkeeper and has a little bit more experience."

red hot chili pepper

So if Sir Alex has no issue why are we fussing over the goalkeeper of choice tongue.gif

Great news to see Jones is alright. That lightens the load a bit, especially since this is the busy Christmas period and Jones is versatile.

no point appealing. normally it'll fail punya. once appeal, chances will be the ban period will be extended to possible 2-3 matches more.

They are the bestest fans. Even their best and most knowledgeable fan pun talk bullshit. What do you expect of the newcomers then?

I don't understand how they can condone to Suarez's ignorance. Fair enough if that Negrito is widely used in South America, but in England they have different set of rules.

Don't be morons by trying to defend issues that aren't defend-able.

I'll take a simple analogy, if Malaysians go to the UK, which set of rules should they follow? For an example, in Malaysia, you can practically smoke anywhere, but can you do that in the UK?

Alamak, wrong analogy then.

Anyways, these are views from a City fan(neutral).

QUOTE
About Luis Suarez: If he said it, he's racist. Semantics and any form of wooly-minded, hair-splitting don't come into it. You can't be part-time racist, just like you can't be a bit pregnant. It does not matter what's acceptable in Uruguay; you must abide by the laws & customs of the country that you are in (when in Rome etc). At best (and I'm being very kind to him, now), it was an appalling lack of judgement on his part. His subsequent lack of grace in accepting this strongly suggests that he regards what he said to Evra to be acceptable.

About Evra's claim: there is simply no way that the investigation could have come to its decision on the word of Evra alone. You can bet your house on that. Suarez has already publicly admitted to calling him something ("a name his teammates call him") and will have been asked to repeat that word to the committee - this is what did for him.

About Liverpool FC: They are making a monumental mistake in attempting to defend the indefensible. (The same accusation could be levelled at Chelsea after AVB's comments re John Terry, incidentally).

About the FA: They have behaved impeccably, for once.

Added on December 23, 2011, 9:13 pmsergio aguero, pablo zabaleta, maxi rodrigues, fabrizio coloccini, jonas gutierrez, franco di santo, alejandro faurlin, mauro formica, denis stracqualursi & *cough* carlos tevez are just 10 argentinian players who have managed to appear in the english premier league this season without calling an opponent 'negro' or 'negrito' even once.

Food for thought?

Surprised that not even Glenn Johnson come out to the public to defend Suarez on this? Since he is the only African English(am I using the term right?) in that team, no?

Alamak, wrong analogy then.

Anyways, these are views from a City fan(neutral).

*
there's definitely some others in their youth ranks, but as for regulars...yeah, seems like Johnson is the only one..but what can he do about it?

I wish SG can stand up in the middle of conflict which I think will only bring bad effect to his club. Make a statement that they'll receive the punishment but hoping people not to paint Suarez as a racist, just declare he was out of control and the tendency was to wind evra up *if suarez is okay with that, by the footage we can know that his intention to evra was bad, don't try to make it up* to be honest, even if they win the appeal and suarez will get lesser match ban, it'll do more harm to his club than if they admit to receive the punishment. SG needs to speak up. To accept the punishment, doesn't mean they don't help suarez and paint him as a racist. To defense from it, I doubt they'll get much sympathy from outside the club.\

Anyway, glad to know Jones is okay, I know he's not that weak biggrin.gif

I think if Glenn Johnson comes out n say that Suarez do call him dearly using that term n it wasnt offensive to him, it wud help the appeal. Being a black english in liverpool squad, his statement would make big difference. I am quite sure if Suarez can use the term on a rival player, he wud hv surely use it on a black teammate, no? Now why the elegant silent, Mr.Johnson?

They are the bestest fans. Even their best and most knowledgeable fan pun talk bullshit. What do you expect of the newcomers then?

I don't understand how they can condone to Suarez's ignorance. Fair enough if that Negrito is widely used in South America, but in England they have different set of rules.

Don't be morons by trying to defend issues that aren't defend-able.

I'll take a simple analogy, if Malaysians go to the SINGAPORE, which set of rules should they follow? For an example, in Malaysia, you can practically smoke anywhere, but can you do that in the SINGAPORE?

How do they come to the conclusion that Evra is to blame in all of this and he lied but their Saint Suarez already admits that he said the 'negrito' word to Evra, multiple times?

Added on December 24, 2011, 6:58 amhttp://www.glory-glory.co.uk/viewtopic.php...56617&start=320

Arsenal, Spurs, Sunderland.. they all think they're a joke.

This guy there made a good point.

QUOTE(Raziel)
Liverpool is really bringing this down on themselves, whoever their advisors are, they seem to be complete morons.

If the scenario is (as seems to be widely reported) Suarez called Evra something that is not offensive in his world/culture, then they should have simply responded by

- Make a statement that Suarez made a mistake by cultural misunderstanding
- Have Suarez publicly apologise to Evra and public in general, accepting it's different in England and he needs to set an example

- Have the club/Suarez donate some money to anti-racism programs

If he did that, no way he would have even got a more than a 3 game ban.

By saying the FA doesn't have evidence, insulting/accusing the victim, and making no acknowledgement that regardless of cultural background you cannot refer/wind up opponents by refering to their race/ethnic background they come off as out of touch and potentially racist themselves and put the FA in a position where any reduction of the ban will make it look like they were simply intimidated by Liverpool.

This is pathetic

Go hang yourself like Gary Speed': Collymore reveals shocking Twitter tirade

Anyway,

Sir Alex Ferguson says Luis Suárez ban was 'right decision'

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson has broken his silence on the Luis Suárez affair, describing the Liverpool striker's eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra as "the right decision" and indicating that the Anfield club should accept the guilty verdict.

Liverpool's vigorous defence of the Uruguayan, including the controversial decision to warm up for their game at Wigan in Suárez T-shirts, has led to widespread criticism throughout the game. Ferguson was not willing to talk about Liverpool's protest statement, in which they described Evra as "not reliable" and called on the Football Association to issue a separate charge against the Manchester United defender, but he made clear that the Premier League champions felt vindicated.

"Our support of Patrice was obvious right from the word go and that's still the same. The matter is over and I think we're satisfied that they [the FA's independent commission] found the right decision. This wasn't about Manchester United and Liverpool at all. It was nothing to do with that. This was an individual situation where one person was racially abused."

Liverpool maintain that was not the case, despite Suárez reportedly admitting using the word "negro", and are now waiting for the commission chairman, Paul Goulding QC, to deliver his full written findings before deciding whether to lodge an appeal.

That risks an even longer ban and Ferguson drew a parallel with the way United reacted when Evra was banned for four matches in 2008 for becoming embroiled in a post-match fight with Sam Bethell, a Chelsea groundsman. The club, he pointed out, had accepted the verdict.

"Patrice got that suspension for the incident down at Chelsea when no one was there, just a groundsman and our fitness coach. He got a four-match ban and we had to wait two weeks for the evidence to come through. We were quite astounded at that. A four-match ban? We thought it was well over the top for a trivial incident. But it happened and there's nothing you can do about it, you know."
