from SAAB official website : http://www.saabgroup.com/About-Saab/Newsro...ming-agreement/

8 December 2011, in News
Defence and security company Saab has signed an Industrial Cooperation teaming agreement with DRB-HICOM. The purpose is to offer the most competitive and attractive proposal to the Government of Malaysia regarding delivery of a high performance and cost efficient Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system.

Saab serves the global market with world-leading solutions, products and services ranging from military defence to civil security. DRB-HICOM is a leading company in the Malaysian automotive and defence industry. The companies combined competencies and capabilities will ensure that the most cost efficient solution will be offered to the Government of Malaysia.

The agreement between Saab and DRB-HICOM will include offering of technology transfer, bringing employment and expertise to Malaysia.
Malaysian Defence Minister Dato’ Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi witnessed the signing of the teaming agreement at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) in Malaysia. The agreement was signed by Gunilla Fransson of Saab and DRB-HICOM’s Abdul Harith Abdullah.

"I'm delighted that we today are formalizing our long lasting relationship. With this teaming agreement, Saab is further reinforcing its long term commitment to the Malaysian defence and civil security market", says Gunilla Fransson, Senior Vice President and head of Saab business area Security and Defence Solutions.

Saab has a long history of supplying high performance, cost efficient defence systems to the Malaysian Armed Forces. Systems like navy and army radar systems, airborne self-protection systems for helicopters and fighters, naval command and control systems and army support weapons, including anti-tank weapons.

Saab's world class, long range Erieye AEW&C system have the capability of early detection of air and sea objects. The sophisticated Erieye radar can also detect and track small objects. This includes unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles, as well as wooden fishing vessels and jet skies. These capabilities give authorities full control of military and civilian airspace and movements at sea. The Erieye system further enhances the possibilities to monitor activities on the sea such as illegal fishery, illegal immigration, smuggling, piracy and also protection of oil and gas installations.

High possibility is the Sikorsky S92 returning after the LIMA 2011 in Langkawi.

A RSAF Chinook was in Langkawi to drop some stuff during LIMA.

but we dont have a vast ground base control and command centre, these AWACS are airborne warning systems, all together you need sea, land and air warning systems also space (satellites), working as a single body. hmm.gif

sure, because it's an evolutionary process.with years of studying and the term "net centric warfare" have also changed due time

Malaysian Armed Forces have been through 3 evolution.from counter-insurgency based army in pre 1989,transition era of the nineties into primarily conventional forces in the turn of the millennia

we have been improving our communication up to the company level(with the introduction to new radio and limited introduction to malaysian-made sapura HF radio),stationary and self propelled radar(ranging from counter battery radar, surface radar to aerial detection radar),strategic C4I C&C and integrated joint triservice operation.

if there is one thing good of having a modest size army,is that such improvement can be introduced and standardized quickly(unlike armed force like PLA who even now struggled to standardize their assault rifle ammunition)

those AWACS thingy are for the fourth stage of MAF modernization;the expansion of the force and make the MAF to be truly high-tech army that can survive(and possibly) win a limited warfare with regional adversary

EF AESA radar is still on development expected to available in 2015.
worst still they still lack of funds to developed their TVC which is y they so eager to find buyer for their EF which is also adding potential international partner for additional funds. CFT is still underdevelopment as well.

If you read what Rafale is going to offer reads the Rafale brochure. it was the best offers among all the fighter.
These definitely open up the windows to developed our own version of BVR, AGM, JDAM.

QUOTE
NO STRINGS ATTACHED

Every political decision maker knows that guaranteed operational sovereignty is a key parameter when selecting a combat aircraft. Unlike alternative sources of late generation combat aircraft, the Rafale team is fully amenable and sufficiently flexible to establish a wide range of synergetic partnerships with its customers: sharing in the industrial programme, ability to maintain and modify the airframe locally, transfer of software source codes, integration of new or indigenous weapons and systems, adaptation to local communications requirements (datalinks, for example) and more.

Operating the most modern fighter in the world is certainly the surest way to protect one’s airspace, but customers also deserve the best support package to ensure that their Rafale front-line squadrons remain fully operational in all conditions. This is why Dassault Aviation is firmly committed to providing support throughout the entire life of the aircraft.

The main step towards independence being the ability to carry out maintenance ‘in-country’, Rafale fleet management and support can be accomplished in situ. Extensive know-how and technology transfers, added to comprehensive training packages, will ensure that customers remain capable of operating their Rafales over the long term.

Dassault now offers its customers comprehensive, fine-tuned industrial packages of services encompassing training and simulation, spare parts supply, calibration of equipment, overhaul and repair of components, and documentation and technical assistance. This type of fixed-price programme for contractor logistic support packages also contributes to long-term cost management while providing guaranteed results.

Full scale in-country maintenance will be carried out by customers, whose national industry will benefit from technology transfers: French authorities have already approved source codes transfers, and even sensitive materials can be maintained locally. The electronic warfare suite can be programmed by customer personnel, and new weapons can be easily integrated.

Moreover, effective and easy-to-use mission preparation and restitution tools significantly contribute to national autonomy and, thanks to the associated electronic warfare programming system, existing threat libraries and jamming/decoying sequences can be updated and controlled by local specialists.
