ops...........i m wrong......i forget serato needs turntables

yea.. i have a friend using serato. its pretty awesome being able to use digital music yet not lose that vinyl feel. i even saw a Rane mixer with serato built in it. thatts pretty good too i think. well back to my issue, i suppose i would prefer a scratch setup as i intend to learn scratching and beat juggling as well instead of learning mixing only. so i did some surveying, and trying to decide whether its better to buy a all-in-1 package or purchase parts individually. which would be better? i guess i want to invest in a set which i can use for a long time so that needs to be considered. if i opt for package, would a numark battle pack or a stanton pak be a better buy?

yeah surprisingly that's how i am here, googled on djing & the find Lowyat forum & been hooked up on it ever since...last year.
but at that time not so many people around, it's been very slow in terms of new reply, only now i see some people noticed this thread....

the cheapest most accepted direct drive turntable after SL1200 is the NUMARK TTX1 ..... it's abit plastic-ky .. but it will do the job ....
in australia it was 650Aussie dollars each .. about RM1900 each ...

not sure what's the retail price in m'sia but I can find out for you if you want...
mixer wise, you want to get a scratch mixer, ... westokan got one 2nd hand for sale if you want ..
so a good set that will last you will still set you back at least 3.5K and above..
so start saving

to get the place is hard ...
to get some to lend their equipment is even harder ...
and the people .. depends how cooperative ..

my idea of gathering ...

- everyone that wants to come have to some how "register" .. no sudden suprise of "friends" visiting .... for security reasons ....
- all turntable user must bring their own needlez and records and so on (*.. hard to find some1 to pinjam turntables )
- all CDJ user ... erm .. bring own CD? .. not sure what can wear off in CDJ
- all newbies that want to come have to refrain from wanting to just jump onto the set and try to "breaK" something
- all DJ must be willing to share knowledge with newbies
- no food or smoking at the *tables* / CDJ .... certainly no dirty or oily hands
- lastly ... everyone must enjoy themself ....

.. oh yea.. and I myself ... play NOISE ..

thanks for the reply. so from your feedback i suppose rather than getting one of those good for beginners Dj-in-a-box set, its better to invest in the industry favoured SL1200 decks and a good mixer. so i suppose based on that a used setup will set me back for 4-5k the least. appreciate the help, now i have a firm budget in mind. i dont think i can even consider a brand new setup now, coz money is tight plus i think it will be hard to find dealers locally rite. so thanks again. any advise is welcome. hit me up if you guys have anything related for sale.

SL1200 new or old .. the price not much different.. .. the reason is because 1200s has the reputation for more than 10 years..
so ppl are willing to pay for the quality ... but SL1200 doesn't have DJ in a box
i think only Stanton & numark has DJ in the box ..


don't ask me about pricing as i never did buy any DJ related stuff yet in m'sia because i got mine all from oversea when i was studying and working there..

oh yea .. one of my dj friend is selling his set i think..

go to excessive records behind lot 10, they're selling 2 x 1200s for 3k, nego abit u can get it for 2.8k. just go for 1200s, reason being is that it depreciate slower that most cars, u can easily sell it back for the same price u bought it.. i actually made some money when i sold my previous 1200s! not to mention its the industry's standard, the best tt around. u got PM regarding the mixer. cheers.

someone tell me if u buy numark u will regret.....

seriously, should i even consider getting one of those dj packages (numark battle pak, stanton djlab2)? from what i read, they are good for beginners but after a while users will just want an upgrade. so its probably better to invest in good decks which will last a long time rite? in that case, sl1200mk2 would be top choice(mk5 would be awesome but too pricey). however, if 1200 was taken out of the equation, what would be the next best thing to get? anything cheaper then 2nd hand 1200s which are worth a consideration? what about numark tt200/tt500/ttx, or stanton t80/t90/t120? is it possible to find 2nd hand units of them locally?

other questions for the sifus:
-what is the advantage of having a usb port on a mixer?
-straight vs S-shaped tone arm? (pros and cons)

@westokan: how good is the pioneer M5 mixer? (honestly)
and how come its stussy edition? did you buy a pioneer X stussy set package?

i not sure about others but Numark TTX-1 is killer .. it's a bit plastic-ky toy like feel but it has a very strong built.
other numark TT .. i not too sure ...

stanton product are hard to find as i think there is no more dealer for st anton product in m'sia ...even there is , they don't stock any stuff becuase of low demand. you better of with numark@ SMX in berjaya times square .... or SL1200 with shops or 2nd hand dealers ...

my opinion .. TTX-1 .. reason = strong solid and value for money. Numark reduced their TTX price to compete with other turntables like Stanton 150 and SL1200 .. so yea .... If i would to change turntables, TTX is my choice .. others i not sure.. your best option to to visit SMX on 7th floor of berjaya times square and ask the expert... my Friend Mr.Kok Soo Aun is the manager there, you might want to talk to him for more expert advice ..


what is the advantage of having a usb port on a mixer?
not sure if there is any USB port on mixer that i know but if there are any USB port , it's usually a midi controller etc to control MP3 straight out of a USB / harddrive ... real mixer doesn't have USB port ..they cannot function as a "computer" to read mp3 file and mix straight from the mixer ..

-straight vs S-shaped tone arm? (pros and cons)

Straight arm = for turntablist to reduce skip .. but might increase wear and tear on records. S-shaped tone arm are standard ... still can maintain some skip resistant but not as good straight arm ..... straight or s-shaped .. doesn't really matter .. get a good needles/cartridge like Q-bert Ortofon / Shure M44-7 ... they will "stick" like glue .. so yea...

one thing to consider about turntables is that ... the cost after that will still continue especially getting Vinyl records... if you going to be a scratch DJ , you must be getting breaks and scratch records which can cost a lot more than normal music vinyl record..... so if you trying to get a not so good set now and later upgrade .. in long term .. you will lose your money ... getting SL1200 .. after years , even u decide to sell , you won't lose much .. like westokan say .. you might make money back in return ..

i was quoted RM1.9k for a numark battle pak, and roughly RM2.3k for stanton DJLab2. for entry level decks, i guess they are priced rather high over here, considering in the states these 2 only go for RM1.2k. so therefore i dont plan to buy these packages brand new, and the only way i would buy them is if someone was selling a used set for CHEAP. so now its time to save up for the 1200s. what is the market price for a used unit in KL now? is it possible to get one for below 1k?

btw, any of you got any vids of your own mixing/scratching/beat juggling? would love to see the works of LYN killer DJs..

first of all you cannot compare with the US .. the reason why it's cheaper there is because the demand are higher hence the price is much lower..
places like in Malaysia... all electronic goods are expensive ..... and it's extra expensive if it's DJ related gears ...
it's possible to get 1K and below (*according to westokan*) but it will be like looking for a needle in the hay sack .. so good luck ...good bargain are hard to come by but it's not impossible ..
