Just an opinion from one of the crowd; just play what they like, and don't need to be gay with mixing. They don't care

i agree, as i said earlier song selection makes up for 70%

QUOTE
in my own opinion. having techniques in mixing accounts up to only 30% of your whole performance but picking the right songs or a good song selection will amount up to 70% of the performance.
i am sure you wouldn't want to hear a fantastic beatmixing dj whom plays rubbish songs aren't you? and most non-dj people dont give a nuts if you have great skills in beatmixing or not, if you realise they care more about the music that is being played. i have heard plenty of djs whom just slam songs in all night long but still get good crowd response. its because the music that dj chosed was good.

QUOTE(Vaiz @ May 19 2008, 11:39 PM)
Thanks for all the replies. smile.gif

Im a bedroom DJ which into trance as my main genre but no restriction to other genre such as house, electro and techno. First of all is not what a big gig, it is just my friends uncle birthday so he asked me to play. Without doubt, i would love to play pure trance but because of the audience and some of my friends they kinda prefer those harder stuff. I understand that im the one who gonna select the tracks not the audience but if you dont play what the audience / the theme wants, the people wont get the mood its just plain dull. I agree with procontavia, study the crowd first then only the selection of tunes. So is it possible for me to play tech and hard trance and progress to techno or electro?
*
you said friend's uncle birthday? so u sure the group of unlces can tahan hardstyle? just because you friends do doesn't mean the uncles can u know? i really cannot picture uncles partying to hardstyle (cant imagine my dad would to anyway)...

as for what i would do i would start the night off with some barstyle house, chillout kind. insert some top 40 along the way. open the floor to dedications. put on some commercial rnb and hip-hop or commercial dance or pop or anything that will float your crowd's boat, you really need to read the floor. but i keep in mind i have another age group of audience here. the uncles. play something they like. for example they are in their mid thirties. so accordingly i would play some late eighties or early nineties which has a good beat. but all in all i would have a continuity of flow.

then from now i have roughly an idea of what the crowd need/ wants . as the night progresses you could play some old skool stuff disco or house or techno then you can progess genres towards hardstuff (if you feel thay want it)... as you get later into the night people are less sober than they are when they came so i guess that they will be more open to harder stuff....

i guess this qualifies more of a mobile gig instead of a full blown rave or something.

well i've just use my computer speakers...hehee tongue.gif
pretty cheap huh...

anyway i never play in front of anybody yet, nor people are that interested to kacau me in the room
*
i have a fair share of mobile gigs.... some good some not so good as all gigging live would to face. but you will have to maintain a spirit of esprit de corps and be professional about everthing even when things goes wrong...
i have mixed for a live bands/ concerts using the allen and heath gl4000, and full blown cerwin vega cabinates das bass cabs and stuff (basically the cream de la cream of pa) till the 'budget' made in china coby brand mixer and dmb (imitation of bmb) speakers.
some formal events and some not so formal.

in all things you do, no matter what kind of gears you use or gigs you have, be professionnal about it.
i cant stress how important this is by just typing it here. perhaps one day you guys teh tarik wif me at mamak then i can start my grandfather story. can start telling stories form world war 2 also can. but i prefere chinese tea, some1 must bring the oolong tea and bring some chinese chess and peanuts and then can start my grandfather story.

btw, guyz any good and cheap tt for scratching? 2nd hand 1200mk2 how much ar? or is numark tt500, tt200 good? how much are the numarks ar?

*
so this weekend we jam at your place?
how do you guys usually go about your jamming session? (as in what do you guys do there?)
how many decks are there? and how many ppl going? as for me i will be going.
so assuming there are enough decks there then i can just bring my cd's and headphones?
i use cdj's btw... i also wanna try vinyls there...

QUOTE(Choongster @ May 22 2008, 06:34 PM)
this will be a casual meet up ... everyone can play around with the CDJ and the turntables
no allocation of "TIME" for set etc
if u feel like spinning ... just spin .. but also let others some time to play with the gear
it's not a jamming session to prove who is better than who
it's like a ice breaking .. get to know each other thing ... and knowing gears..
so don't be so formal ..

however attendance should be informed .... we do not want to overcrowd the place and risk any theft by unknown "friends"
so yea..
*
first time i would be attending a dj jam session so i dont really know what to expect. glad you clarified on what you guys usually do during the jamming.
i like the idea that its kind of informal thing. glad it is that way, so i guess the environment would be more relaxed in a way.

look but as you said, the mixvibes has some diver issues and os issues. so is mixvibes stable?

form what i know people go for ssl because its stable and doesn't crash.
the reason why so many people are refusng to go digital is because of stability issues. people would rather stick to cd's and vinyls because they hardly fail. imagine having a gig and your software crashes...

Haha, i respect Carl Cox. Yoji music is ann0ying, sorry no offence.

i think it all depends on personnal preferences. to me ithink both are good. just that both play different music.

QUOTE(westokan @ May 25 2008, 10:28 PM)
boleh pakai build in meh? i got 7.1 in my desktop, will that work?
*
so are there 3-line outs (balanced 3.5mm stereo jacks)? if yes then i think theoritically can kua.. just that you control the software via keyboard and mouse and cue via the headphones on another output. unless you have another 2 line ins?
