well - for saving battery , by using EDGE[2G] connection, the battery consumption is lower than using 3G connection.

if you are not doing anything..it is recommended to use 2G mode , even in 2G mode, you can get your e-mail, BBM,and any notification... quickly...[well it depend on the coverage and location]
