GORENG WILL MAKE YOU SICK This is a true story (from my friend). Mum said my uncle saw it in Tunjang (Kedah) and the pasar malam in Titi Chai Kangar (Perlis) where goreng pisang was sold in the afternoons.

The hawker added a plastic drinking straw into a wok of hot oil and let it melt completely before he started to fry some bananas in the bubbling oil. This is why some fried bananas and ubi are so crispy... for hours...!! My uncle asked the hawker about this, but the hawker did not answer him. When my uncle told my mum about this, they realised this is how the hawkers ensure that fried food stays crispy for their customers.

My mum said that in Thailand , they do the same thing to keep fried ikan bilis and fried onions crispy, even if left in the open for hours!! Another time, I was with my family in Cameron Highlands . It was 3:00 pm and we were hanging around the market area, where there were several hawker stalls. At one of them, there was a big wok of boiling oil with an empty plastic bottle floating in it and slowly melting. At first I thought it had fallen into the oil accidentally, but then I saw a little girl, about 7-years old, holding a pair of chopsticks and stirring the bottle around in the hot oil.

I realised, Oh my God... these people were using melted plastic to fry food, so that the fried snacks would not turn soft when it cooled down later. Please forward to all your friends... DO NOT EAT CRISPY FRIED SNACKS from the hawkers!! Even if you don't see them melting the plastic in oil, they might have added the plastic a few hours before. After all, they keep the black oil for next day's frying as well, to save cost on cooking oil.

most chopstick used in hawker r plastic..... its harmful to eat food cooked using plastic chop stick since it can melt into the food... its health issue here, not dignity

i oni buy my pisang goreng from one stall at kelana jaya, their pisang goreng taste nice bekoz they use KFC oil.

Fried food outside is generally unhealthy.

They use low quality oil, and they constantly recycle it.

Don't know if plastic makes it more crispy, I think just adding some bicarbonate of soda is more than sufficient.

hmm if MC D I would like to see that because can sue for millions can be rich.

who wants to sue these goreng pisang sellers? lawyer see also NO EYE SEE.

And to think some ppl are so fuss about halal but not knowing this is eating plastic is worse!
Swift action is needed to educate public about this bad practice and consistence enforcement be carried out!

i once have to wait to buy a goreng pisang from a famous hawker...i witnessed his work from starting the fire till frying the bananas...but i didnt see any straw or any plastic subtances been put into the hot oil

it's good to educate because some hawkers do it, and we should be made aware.

So don't generalize and get all holy/mighty about it.

i believe the mak cik / aunty @ ah so / indian aunty who we have frequented since young to get our fix of pisang goreng / oily fried ghost / horse leg / vadeh are safe.

Actually, i've heard this since the 80s... but back then thay said pre-packaged 'bawang goreng' is made of straws...

...and also, kuah laksa is added with tissue to substitute fish...

i know mak cik jah wont do it.... shes very ethical, never con ppl in business n not put money first bfore customer health.... with her reputation im sure her pisang goreng is not plastic unlike ssnd

imma not ignorant la unker...i've witnessed a hawker from setup his kedai, to getting his cooking oil hot, coating the banana with flour, till frying the banana...no such straw-goreng-incident happened...& his banana fritters are as awesome as usual, & still crispy even its getting cold hours later

i think the crisp of fried banana is depending on how they mix their flour. my mum was a fried banana seller back in early 2000.
