Hello Sillymexican,Thanks Yes, there is no configuration on the Firewall on brand new units, except some very very basic rules. If you need some more examples, you can read them: http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Basic_univer...firewall_script http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Category:Firewall Thanks. |

QUOTE(CloudComputer @ Mar 17 2016, 10:47 AM) Hello Sillymexican, Ok. So are you informing your customers who purchase your unit as a replacement to the dlink that tm provide that there is absolutely no firewall protection for their home network? Yes, there is no configuration on the Firewall on brand new units, except some very very basic rules. If you need some more examples, you can read them: http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Basic_univer...firewall_script http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Category:Firewall Thanks. Whilst mikrotik is by far a superior product to the dlink it needs to be configured correctly. Without a good configuration Peoples networks and personal information is exposed and they were better off using the DLink. Sorry but I think it's wrong to advertise a product as a suitable replacement when it is not. |

MikroTik is a well trusted router brand among Malaysian UniFi user for some years until now, it doesn't gain the name from any of our marketing works or any other ads, but comes from words of mouth of the true users, many of them are generously sharing their knowledges and experiences on the forum, you can learn from them at https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=2040480. I am sure they think MikroTik is one of the best UniFi replacement router. Cloud Computer This post has been edited by CloudComputer: Mar 21 2016, 11:04 AM |

QUOTE(Deslack @ Mar 20 2016, 09:04 AM) Stop being an ass here, what makes you think a D-Link is configured better out of the box than that of MikroTik's? I'm not being an ass. I sell and configure Mikrotik all the time in business environments. I personally use an mAP when I travel and I have multiple mikrotik devices running my home network. I did not say dlink is better. I said an unconfigured mikrotik has no protection so the user was better off with the original dlink router. The consumer should be aware that buying a mikrotik router is not as as simple as following the guide and setting up the Unifi to dial out. I have personally recommended and helped a number of my friends to upgrade to mikrotik - I am a fan do not misunderstand me. However I make sure that it is configured with a firewall! QUOTE(CloudComputer @ Mar 21 2016, 11:03 AM) Hello Sillymexican, No one said mikrotik is not a fantastic product. What I said was it does not have a firewall configured out of the box. And 99% of home user does not know this. So if you want to compare for home use out of the box what is better. The dlink is. If you want to compare what is more powerful, has more configuration options then of course mikrotik is the answer. Cloud Computer If you want to sell the item as a home product why don't you pre-load them with a firewall configuration? Dont BS people who know what they are talking about. This post has been edited by Sillymexican: Mar 23 2016, 12:20 AM |

I'm afraid Sillymexican is correct. There are only very basic firewall filters in a default ROS config and one very important one that doesn't do anything.
Anyway here's a real-life example. Just last week, I bought an RB951Ui-2HnD from Viewnet, Low Yat Plaza. Unifi was setup on that and within 24hrs, someone is using it in a DNS amplification attack. That was my bad and easily fixed. For the average user, they won't even know that their router has been compromised. The RB951 is fast enough to handle normal browsing needs and serve up the DDOS simultaneously. All this could have been prevented by that one important default filter that I mentioned above but in ROS default config, it's set to drop packets to the input chain from ether1. So that's one way that Asus, TP-Link, DLink, etc... are better than Mikrotik but of course, I always recommend Mikrotik. I love the router and I could always use a few more zombies when I need to DNS amp someone. PS: I wrote about DNS Amp Attacks last month https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3860279 QUOTE(Deslack @ Mar 20 2016, 09:04 AM) This post has been edited by soonwai: Mar 23 2016, 04:06 AM |

I think you guys are saying all the stuffs you bought from Low Yat should be configured for you well even before you open it up. I don't think you can have it for most of the products, and this is included MikroTik products, the same for most of other networking products.

Err no just in the very basic first instance.
1. Dlink has configured firewall out of box 2. Mikrotik has no firewall out of box. Can understand or not? Mikrotik had potential to be a great firewall (I know I configure them) but out of the box it has no firewall configuration at all. Not promoting anything. Just sharing relevant knowledge. Your price same as landasan (importer) and got no benifit. So better just buy from importer who already offer very good support and also understand how the routers actually work! And if you go there and ask for discount sure to get! |
