Can some insider from the fibre cable industry share with us what is this about?

"Projek Pemasangan Kabel Jalur Lebar Berkelajuan Rendah" going on in my housing area starting last month which is non TM related.

They are installing new poles similar to TM telephone poles(but are not) and also running them on existing TNB electricity poles.
Those cables NEVER touches TM poles for some reasons.

The unfamiliar recognition with those cables are that they have GREEN stripes instead of YELLOW owned by TM Unifi's.

I had the opportunity to ask supervisor of the cable contractor on the job and he says it's going to be used for Maxis upcoming cable TV and broadband project something between the lines.

I'm very heppi now that finally some competing ISPs is now hearing the pleas of Ipoh residents since TM has been depriving us of Unifi for so long.

Thank you for hearing the needs of Ipoh residents. rclxms.gif

Looks like some other telco player is helping lay fibre optic in Ipoh earlier than TM. Kuddos to them. icon_rolleyes.gif

The cable contractor says the network will eventually serve whole of Ipoh area. Sounds good since Unifi is not serious making any efforts here in Ipoh.

Sounds like somebody outside TM is hearing to our needs. brows.gif

Not sure whether what the contractor say is true, even is true also no idea when it going ready as you know those worker, simply job can take up to few months to years, lol. Secondary is the pricing and the speed they offer, this is the most important things, and yea i'm glad they hear us. I think Unifi going available next year right, but in Jelapang area, how fail, lol. Anyway hope this available soon, keep update to us.

Cheers!

No signs of Unifi until now at postcode: 31650 where Pasir Putih, Pengkalan and new Aeon Station 18 is located nearby.

Now the only Unifi infrastructure seen only in 31400 which is Tasek exchange (Kg Simee, Taman Shukor, Tambun Baru, Sunway & part of Ipoh Garden). That also still many areas such as Canning Garden, Fair Park all nothig seen yet.

Also Jelapang 30020 is yet to be available in their Unifi availability site check.

If TM going to start laying at Pasir Putih, maybe another 2 years from now lah.

Tasek/Ipoh Garden/part of Bercham postcode is already available for registration for Unifi with 31400

Jelapang is 30020

Pasir Putih/Pinji is 31650

At least Time/Maxis have better understanding of high demand than TM laugh.gif

They are targeting places such as GeorgeTown, Gurney and Ipoh City.

Ipoh Central's postcode is 30000 leading down to Jln Pasir Putih which ends around Pasir Putih/Pinji/Pengkalan suburb with 31650

This is where most of the city's population are mainly concentrated within city limits.

No doubt majority of the population are Chinese.

I tried searching for some info on this and this was what I found out:

The setup here is the exact thing which Maxis trialed in Bangsar Baru and Damansara some 2 years ago where they started pulling fibre on TNB poles.

Further search revealed that one of the forumer here is connected to this Maxis exclusive fibre network. His handle is Kampung2005

The equipment setup by Maxis as posted by him:

All TM Unifi infrastructure is accessible for Maxis Fibre Home but the opposite is not true if the network is exclusively owned by Maxis themselves like the ones in Bangsar Baru, Sierramas and Bandar Utama.

Correct me if I'm wrong.Nothing in the recent press mentioned that Maxis is allowing TM to provide Unifi on their own built fibre network for the way around but they are paying TM Wholesale for access to the HSBB instead.

There are good and bad points for this.

An exclusive network allows the network operator to have full control over it.
Things such as more bandwidth reservation for each user to allow more STBs to be installed and higher bandwidth packages. Risk of wholesale operator prioritizing own isp etc.
You don't need to be accompanied by TM technicians along with Maxis technicians for installs.

Downside: Less choices unless other players such as Jaring, P1, Time and NTT willing to sign up with Maxis last mile wholesale.

It's a 2 edged sword actually.

Maybe they don't have the funds and expertise as said.

But I'm happy that some other telco is being serious in their business direction and willing to cover my area which TM is reluctant to offer.

"reluctant" laugh.gif assuming is a bad negative attitude... network development is base on demand.. if you want it, demand for it, if only you alone wants it and the rest dont.. whats the point
so the secret is, get "alot" of your people put it on the demand list...
besides maxis aka astro is going for cable tv.. they are looking at astro demographic instead of internet

I'm not sure if TM Business Research does its network planning by using demand list entries but it's not quite an accurate way of evaluation. "Astroturfing" does exist:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astroturfing

Someone could simply key in fake credentials or someone else's details just to put demand in your "DEMAND LIST" if they wanted to.

This is a typical home located in Taman Shukur:
user posted image
http://www.ipohhouse.com/search/label/Bercham

Why is TM targetting areas such as Taman Shukur as one of the 1st in Ipoh to roll out Unifi left many people questioning in the dark.

Homes such as this are already covered by Unifi but not for homes that cost 10X more close to a million?
If you have say in the ISP, which area would you choose to service instead?

Key in 31400 under address keyword and you will find it covered already.Even open for registration.

https://occ.unifi.my/HSBBCustomerPortal/HSB...e_checkcoverage

A smart telco would look at its customer spending habits and ARPU by area. Not merely by looking at "Demand List" that could possibly be made up.

To have Maxis considered my area, I'm sure they have enough statistics and demand to justify their decisions. My area is still part greenfield with gated communities sprucing up. We were one of the 1st to have Jaring Flite ADSL as alternative broadband in Malaysia.

Not very effective way because it can be invalidated just like "undi palsu". Astroturfing is like ghost voters.

A person who wants to increase demand/votes his area could just make fake entries as many as he/she like.

I was merely pointing out to you that demand lists has its shortcomings and entries could be made fake. Some freelancer or housing developer could just spend his time placing requests just to satisfy his own purpose. It has no difference than casting ghost votes.

Then you come telling me that why don't I such thing since its "good for me".I asked you in return if you have by any chance condone such practices but now you're quick to shout back at me and relate it all to politics?

Anyway this is what happens when you allow fake demand and speculation to be created:
Areas with homes that are in such conditions are covered by Unifi while properties that deserve such facilities are not.

Hi there. Have you got your house covered by Unifi yet since you live in Tambun which is under Tasek exchange?

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1461083/+1740#

If not why don't you join in my thread and update everyone on your area's progress.
This was my real intention of creating this topic but there was someone who wanted to stir things up.

Did you know that property prices can be simply be increased by 8-16% just by having FTTH coverage?

With this said do you know what political game is being played?

Batu Gajah is also considered a suburb of Ipoh. If fibre is pulled in this direction, next would be your suburb and the rest such as Simpang Pulai, Batu Gajah & Gopeng because their exchanges are just next to Pasir Putih.

Supermarket only nothing special. But then tenants would also want broadband in their shops. How?
Streamyx is the only choice?

The exchange in your area(Tasek) is already servicing Unifi. Sunway Tambun already have fiber cabinets labelled with "TSK Cxxx" and along the road with the army camp.

FTTH is every urbanite basic rights.

By the way do they have those remote cabinets installed near your house labelled with "VxxxxV?
If got then its just when they want to add the outdoor FDC right next to it.

Added on November 17, 2011, 9:51 pm[EDIT]

Here's another point that people should take note.

Fibre optics at least with GPON allows an extended coverage range of around 4X of ADSL.

Meaning traditional telephone exchanges could only cover distances below 5km radius depending on copper wiring conditions but fibre optics using GPON can extend upto 20km in length. With repeaters, it could even go further without taking much hit.

It's not surprising that with just a telephone exchange it can now cover the whole city.

Well, at least give this unknown company credit for telling the truth about the Low speed broadband.
Would TM own up to such truth?

Which kind of cabinet?

This type(1):

Or this type(2):

If type(1), it means your area has fibre optic available. Provisioning of Unifi service will depend on when TM wants to service your area. But you're assured that fibre is already READY for further action.

If type(2) it's confirm Unifi will be made available in FTTH in your area. You can start applying . Usually they build this next to type(1) cabinets or those long rocket shape old switches.

If you tour the housing area behind De Garden you'll find many of type(2) FDC cabinets with label "TSK Cxxx"

TSK is the exchange office shortcode and I have no idea what C is followed by 3 digit identifier number.
C could probably mean cable as to fibre optic cable.

Which part of Greentown did you saw this activity going on?

Were they installed aerially on TNB poles too or underground? Where was it heading?

As for Gunung Rapat, it's next as soon as TM completes Tmn Cempaka which is under TSK exchange.

Hmmm! Thanks for the pictures.

could this be the first area "service" by P1 ?

V = VDSL ? some said it is 2mbps, which I don't think so, ADSL has been long supporting 4mbps

but anywhere, thinking writing to Menteri Besar can share some light of the internet at Perak?

Which part of Greentown did you saw this activity going on?

Were they installed aerially on TNB poles too or underground? Where was it heading?

As for Gunung Rapat, it's next as soon as TM completes Tmn Cempaka which is under TSK exchange.

It's in Setia Alam. I just borrowed it to do some explanation.
Usually you'll see these cabinets labelled with:
[Area Code] followed by:
F
R
VxxxxV (most recent ones)

It does not GUARANTEE that you'll be getting Unifi though except provide hints that fibre is available.

Huh P1? However we are the one of the 1st areas in Ipoh to be serviced by P1 which is true.

I don't have an idea what V also means. Absolutely no idea.
V= video, VDSL, velocity, whatever.
But if you see cabinet type(1) you know there's fibre in your area already.

The correct channel to contact in Perak is:

Head
Ho Hsieh Hsiung
Email : hsiungho@kperak.com.my

Some important information about Perak InfoComms infra:

Partner ISP: Jaring

Alternatives for Last Mile connectivity:
• Broadband Over Powerline (BOP)

• Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G

• Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH)

I would disagree and oppose (BOP). FTTH should be the preferred choice.
without an extensive fibre network, BOP and LTE won't materialize.

It as simple idea as trying to plug in a 256kbps DSL WAN connection into a 300mbps MIMO Wireless-N router. Would you still experience fast internet connection? How about replacing the WAN connection with a 100mbps FTTH line?

Same applies to BOP substations and LTE access points. Are you going to get enough internet experience if bandwidth is insufficient?

Your area's exchange is already servicing Unifi. Any new cables running on the telephone poles that you noticed?
The road leading into Tambun turning in from Jln. Sultan Azlan Shah already has one of the type(2) cabinet in front of the army camp.Place close attention on your way back to Tambun town. Sunway Tambun also already covered with one of type(2) cabinets just in front of Sunway College branch. Confirm it with TM staffs if you see them on the streets working nearby your place by striking a conversation with them.

Yes you're right. It doesn't meant anything except just an early indication that fibre is already available in your housing area. Most areas in KV right before Unifi launch were getting these remote cabinets 2 years back.

Until you see type(2) cabinets appearing in your area, FTTH won't be available in your area.

I've not heard of VDSL2 being to depoyed to landed homes yet until now so there's no way those type(1) cabinet will be serving Unifi to landed homes.

Yellow stripped cables belong to TM's HSBB.So that confirms that Unifi is indeed expanding to Greentown and the Menteri Besar's residence area.

As for green stripped, I don't have any idea. That's why I'm waiting for someone to come in for clarification or help on this.

Those boxes already prove that fibre is already just close to your house gate.

The question is how soon the telco actually wants to provide FTTH to your house.

Note each cable the pull already has lots of redundancies for future needs.Inside one cable expect at least >8 strands of fibre. Some even reaching as many as over 96 strands each as thin as your hair.
Here's a picture:
http://www.aflglobal.com/getattachment/c2c...able-Range.aspx

1 strand alone can be spliced up to 32 homes but according to Malaysian FTTH scene, they are doing it up to 64 as norm.(Those who know more about this please correct me if I'm wrong).
I can confirm Jaring does 1:64 splices with their KK Cybecity Apartments

What is your 1st 3 digits of your current phone number?

05-???xxxx

If your number is 536xxxx or 533xxxx, then tough luck your exchange is the mini sub exchange that is situated near the Pakatan flats area. This mini telephone exchange is actually a sub exchange of Tasek. They have minimal equipment inside. They serve low cost housing areas.

The smaller ones labelled with Cxxx are called FDP cabinets. It is where you organized all the fibre cables that are separated from the (1xN) splitter.

The large ones you can call them remote DSLAMs, MSAN cabinets or AT&T calls them UVerse calls them VRADs.

If your area has been monopolized by Maxis, then the ADSL service in your area must be real good.

I heard they use very good equipment compared to TM. They have been using Stingers by Alcatel-Lucent and DHCP assignment.

Looking up Google:-

FDP = Fibre Distribution Panel (also Filho Da Puta - Portuguese for Son Of b**** tongue.gif )
DSLAM = Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer
MSAN = Multi-Service Access Node

Just came back from Ipoh...
I noticed that there are "small" Unifi Cabinet around the Army Camp Area (Not sure where it is)...
It was labelled as "TSK xxxxx" something....
Some more, most of the phone polls around Ipoh have two types of cables hanging on it...
Above one is existing copper infrastructure and below the copper cable, there is fibre cable with yellow strip underneath the cable.... biggrin.gif But unfortunately, there's no Fibre Distribution box seen yet.... sad.gif
Location : Around the Pantai Puteri Hospital... (Greentown perhaps)

If you want to have more look at them go behind De Garden Mall and drive around the housing area.
The cables there mostly hanging with the yellow stripped cable and you can find a few FDP cabinets with TSK Cxxx around.

You can also find such cables in front of the Sikh Gurdwara Temple near Purnama Army Mart near the stadium on the way to Greentown.

Your eyes must be sharp to notice the yellow stripped cables. It's harder to locate at night.

You don't need to find a FDP cabinet around to have the service. On the poles sometimes you see there's a cylinder shaped black box which looks exactly like this:

user posted image

That's where they splice the fibre into many branches from 1 single lead fibre strand to few premises.Usually 1:4 from each pole.

Added on January 10, 2012, 10:24 pmGot new tong sampah just outside the house with green stripped fibre on TNB poles.

i have a *theory* that maxis is reselling for TM and then leasing it to other ISP like Time and Jaring.

so maxis doesn't really need to sell their own fiber broadband packages but other ISP like Jaring and Time can lease from maxis to sell their own fiber packages to consumers.

thoughts?

I can confirm the infrastructure being built here in Ipoh is owned by Maxis.

The round manhole cover that they used to cover the routes/drains they dug and installed on the ground has "Maxis" labelled on it.They have locks on them. They have been installed just very recent.

The older Maxis manhole covers are different which are rectangular concrete type.

Those look like backhaul uplinks to telco towers/base stations.

Nothing to do with fixed lines. If got fixed lines, you will see FDCs(fibre distrbution cabinets) along the road nearby.

TS got pics of Maxis cabinets nearby? Or drop boxes on poles in front of the house?

If none, then those cables are mostly for LTE base station uplinks.

You want to see improvement? Start the boycott by not voting for him in the next GE.

In Penang here opposition gave Time more preferences in wiring up Georgetown and Batu Feringghi condominiums. That's why Time have very good coverage and strong customer based on Penang Island. TM covers Bayan Baru and mainland mostly.

Your Jaring was strong during last time opposition ruling in Perak. After they seize the state, Jaring is seldom heard already.

New government will give you more choices and favor places where your current MB avoid today. They'll do the opposite.
