lwliam: Hmmm that does sound like a good recipe for a directional softbox look. Something like ahtsong's shot, but with +1 EV.

Ahtsong's photo looks like as though he's using a wireless flash with stofen, hand held high on camera left - thus the sharper shadow fall-off below the nose.

Maybe what I could try is to raise my umbrella up higher to get a less softer light effect. But I don't have a holder that high, lol. Need to improvise on one.

finally got this gem at a lower price..initial test shows that its AF quite fast and smooth..not as noisy as my previous 75-300..nice bokeh, but bokeh shaped like hexagon..sharp!..vry solid build...surprised that such an old lens still maintained so well and can produce such image quality..dyxum say it is born at year 1985..even older than myself.. sweat.gif

nice shoot, inside penang ferry?

btw, my setup for that shot is simple, i mount the tripod and place it on the camera top-left (beside my wife). no stofen but std F58 diffuser, zoom the flash to 105mm and flash at 1/8 (if not mistaken or 1/16), trigger using pop-up flash with flash compensation -3EV, use a tissue to cover the pop up flash as well try to minimize all the light from the pop-up.

What's the problem with starting iso200 indoors?

From there you will realise your shutter speed can't keep up and then you learn how to increase the ISO to compensate.

If you start from high ISO, everything will look very nice on te tiny LCD screen but once you upload it on the computer and you see the pictures so grainy and smudgy, then you complain the camera sucks and not up to par.
