Hi,

Can anyone tell me what are the different between Chipboard, Compressed wood & Melamine board?

Want buy bedroom set & these are the material in the market. Some tell me there are no different between them; but the price differ quite a lot.

Anyone use MIXBOX? Any feedback?

TQ

They are basically the same thing. Difference in price is whether medium or high density, thickness of board and type of edging used.

Chipboard is one type of compressed board (not wood). Melamine board is normally a melamine lamination on top of chipboard. Some chipboard is cheap because the lamination is almost same like paper. Melamine board cost higher because the surface is water proof.

But the price for melamine board's bedroomset is almost double the price of chipboard. Terrible

not terrible at all actually if you compare their product side by side. Chipboard furniture is the lowest grade furniture and you need to avoid them IF you looking for quality product.

Let me try to clear the confusion. All the mentioned material are termed as chipboards or particle boards, made from compressed wood chips. Difference in quality is in density of the wood chips and the lamination, i.e the surface finish. The cheapest type would be chipboard laminated with recycled paper, which scratches easily and bloats when in contact with water. Furniture made from this is available in most furniture stores but never in stores such as Harvey Norman, XYQT or Rozel, just to name a few. Melamine board is chipboard laminated with melamine paper (treated paper) and is more hard wearing and water resistant (not waterproof). Compressed wood is basically chipboard as the name suggests. All these boards come in sizes of either 4'x8' or 6'x8' in their raw form prior to being sawn and made into furniture pieces. When these boards are are sawn into custom sizes, all the edges are exposed and has to be banded (edging). Banding material can be in the form of printed recycled paper, pvc or abs. All these differences contribute to price level. Although there is the rare exception, general rule is when purchasing furniture, the cheaper it is, the poorer the quality since furniture maker supplies come from the same factories. You get what you pay for. tongue.gif But to be on the safe side, buy from reputable stores.

When you eat meat, which one is easier to chew? Chop meat or one single piece of meat?

Solid wood and ply wood is still better.

You are right. BUT, using solid wood to build modern furniture is way too expensive. So nowadays solid wood common use on dining table, chair, coffee table and etc. You hardly can find modern bedroom sets using solid wood.

You're welcome smile.gif . I think what he/she meant would be MDF board (sounds cheap) and sometimes termed as engineered wood (sounds expensive laugh.gif ). Its made from wood fibre and denser/tougher than chipboards. MDF can also be moulded into different forms. You should check out.... say Lorenzo or Rozel to get a feel of prices. Like Cellini, they are all local manufacturers and compete in the same market segment.

Yeah i'd been to Lorenzo & Rozel too & prices were more or less the same. I'm eyeing on few items from Cellini & most probably i'll go for'em. But i found dat less ppl r discussing bout Cellini's products so i have limited knowledge bout the quality & durability.
Btw, tot Cellini's products r made in Spore? (as wat da salesperson told me)

What about "Plywood"?
Is there a difference between "Plywood" and "Nyatoh Timber Plywood"?

They don't peel Nyatoh timber and glued it together become plywood.
They used Nyatoh timber veneer or some sort like that to glue on top of plywood, aka the surface only is Nyatoh not the entire plywood is Nyatoh.

Added on November 15, 2011, 9:39 pmMost furniture now is made of MDF, and some cheaper one can make from chipboard.

Chipboard has lower strength and more susceptible to water absorbent and also nailing and screwing is less secured than plywood.

Plywood also got many type, some made of palm tree and coconut tree which strength and durability is quite poor but significant cheaper than ordinary soft/medium hardwood of tropical tree.
But normal consumer may not know how to identify them, and mostly within the timber or plywood industry know very well, but due to the fact it is significant cheaper, many carpenter/traders like to use due to cost wise.
So make sure when buying plywood it is 100% tropical forest timber that made of soft/medium hardwood.

for wood panel

compressed wood
-MDF (made of wood fiber)
-chipboard (made of wood chip that being compressed/glued together)

plywood/solid wood
- timber being peeled piece to piece and glued/compressed at cross (90) degree to each other, can consist from 3 to 9 layers or even more, depended on thickness, can up to 1 inch thick
- solid wood, depended of what kind of species you want.

In ordinary sense, I rate it the sequence as,
solid wood - plywood - MDF - Chipboard

If high gloss surface, it usually means spray painted and since this is an expensive process, they will use MDF or higher. Some high gloss laminate like acrylic can also be pressure formed on MDF
Melamine itself is a laminate, normally applied to chipboard.

I see...but i been to furniture shop which sells low price, they also produce gloss surface on some wood which the wood like very low quality and it smells strong like spray paint.

Lately i go to furniture shop, been seeing and asking, melamine do comes in form of compressed or chipboard ya?

To choose the better quality chipboard wood, we choose by its weight or by knocking the wood is it? Correct me if wrong
