Chipboard is one type of compressed board (not wood). Melamine board is normally a melamine lamination on top of chipboard. Some chipboard is cheap because the lamination is almost same like paper. Melamine board cost higher because the surface is water proof.

not terrible at all actually if you compare their product side by side. Chipboard furniture is the lowest grade furniture and you need to avoid them IF you looking for quality product.

You are right. BUT, using solid wood to build modern furniture is way too expensive. So nowadays solid wood common use on dining table, chair, coffee table and etc. You hardly can find modern bedroom sets using solid wood.
