QUOTE(liez @ Sep 21 2011, 06:25 AM)
The Emotional Highbury and The Grand Ashburton Grove

Highbury 1913-2006

For the majority of their time in south-east London, Arsenal played at the Manor Ground in Plumstead, a three-year period at the nearby Invicta Ground between 1890 and 1893 excepted. The Manor Ground was initially just a field, but the club installed stands and terracing in time for their first Football League match in September 1893. They played their home games there for the next twenty years (with two exceptions in 189495), until the move to north London in 1913.
user posted imageuser posted image

Arsenal Stadium, widely referred to as Highbury, was Arsenal's home from September 1913 until May 2006. The original stadium was designed by the renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, and had a design common to many football grounds in the UK at the time, with a single covered stand and three open-air banks of terracing. In the 1930s, the entire stadium was given a massive overhaul, with new Art Deco West and East stands constructed, opening in 1932 and 1936 respectively; in addition, the North Bank terrace had a roof added, which was later bombed during World War II and not restored until 1956.

At its peak, Highbury could hold over 60,000 spectators, and had a capacity of 57,000 until the early 1990s. The Taylor Report and Premier League regulations forced Arsenal to convert Highbury into an all-seater in time for the 199394 season, reducing the capacity to 38,419 seated spectators. This capacity had to be reduced further during Champions League matches to accommodate additional advertising hoardings, so much so that for two seasons (199899 and 199900) Arsenal played Champions League home matches at Wembley, which could house more than 70,000 spectators.

Final moments - the emotions run high in Highbury

user posted imageuser posted imageuser posted image

Ashburton Grove 2007-present

Expansion of Highbury was restricted because the East Stand had been designated as a Grade II listed building and the other three stands were close to residential properties. These limitations have prevented the club from maximising the revenue that their domestic form could have brought in recent seasons. After considering various options, in 2000 Arsenal proposed building a new 60,000-seater stadium at Ashburton Grove, since renamed the Emirates Stadium, about 500 metres south-west of Highbury. The project was initially delayed by red tape and rising costs, but construction was completed in July 2006, in time for the start of the 200607 season. The stadium is named after its sponsors, the airline company Emirates, with whom the club signed the largest sponsorship deal in English football history, worth approximately 100 million; however some fans refer to the ground as Ashburton Grove, or the Grove, as they do not agree with corporate sponsorship of stadium names. The stadium will be officially known as Emirates Stadium until at least 2012, and the airline will be the club's shirt sponsor until the end of the 201314 season.

Have already "Reported" the old thread for closure (without warning, hopefully tongue.gif ).

How do you rate Per's performance?

It's arguable that Terry's goal was his fault or GK's. I believe it's Per's fault.

For Terry's goal, I don't put every blame on Per.

If you see the match, Arteta was supposed to be there. Who knows he retreat to the left hand side behind Scz.

i think it'd be a matter of tactical preference for wenger in choosing between kosc and mert. mert to deal with aerial threats, kosc maybe to deal with pacier players. tho honestly, verma can handle both kind of attaackers lol

He stayed on the pitch because it was not a clear goalscoring opportunity. As much as the rule apply to outfield players the same goes for the Goalkeeper.

Walcott was a sly fox today, felt down and quickly pick himself up again and take possesion of the ball, give Cech a strike to remember. Wonderful player. Capello must be cuming all over his pants when he saw this on tv.

But we still conceed thru set pieces even with M4...AW need to beef up our defence IMHO...hoping TV5 will be fit all season..

Ramsey is really amazing currently...

i never thought he would ever recover after that nightmare challenge that broke his leg into two...

2nd half was truly the best performance i had since in recent months... simply stunning thumbup.gif

tbh, AVB's tactics was dumb, Arsenal had so many fouls, they should take chances with set pieces, AVB clearly did not take knowledge of Arsenal having bad record on set-pieces and all the chelsea players do was take a quick free-kick. 5-3 Its their funeral.

Every CB has their bad day. The game was intense. To me it was unlucky on Mertesacker's part. We shouldnt judge Per on just one game. You must take into consideration he had being solid from day 1.

I notice that nobody mentions about this.

This is a "double comeback" win for the Gunners!

Guess it's proven that the team has the correct mentality to challenge the Top 4 and other competitions.

i think arsene better to play the boys. it's not fair to rob their chances because Arsenal is facing ManC.
they might get beaten horribly but that a good lesson for the boys.

i see your point... but as some have pointed out, this is the closest we are to a title (so far in the season), so why not go all out? maybe having half senior and half youngster team would be the best solution... hmmm i'm not sure on this one...

I don't know about you guys, but personally I believe it wasn't because Terry slipped, it was because the pass was too powerful and he knew that he couldn't collect it. Slipping "might" get something from the referee.... Terry fans don't shoot me, please sad.gif I'm only speculating, not necessarily true.

ya, i think terry was caught with the heavy pass. even he don't slipped, vps might get ahead of him, and he might have last man foul on vps and resulted in red card

i kinda agree with u, but i dont think he purposely slipped to get referee's attention.. it was just for the sake of couldnt get the ball properly, so he just fell down to show that it wasnt his fault

But van Persie was quite far from Terry. Honestly, I didnt expect Terry to slipped. But winning 5-3 at Stamford Bridge is an excellant result.

Co-commentator was also funny. He said last weekend got 7 goals at Manchester derby, today got 8 goals at London derby. So he is expecting another 7-8 goals next weekend tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

it looks weird and suspicious the way terry falls , but i suspect a muscle pain/a feeling like a cramp to his leg since the way he need to backtrack the pass and being under pressure from rvp plus everything happen at the 85th minute when the leg endurance is at its limit.

*
There's a second speculation from me tongue.gif

Terry knew that the pass was too much for him to chase and he tried to slide tackling it out but his foot got stuck = slipped. I believe this is the closest considering the decent amount of respect I have on Terry.

JT didn't expected that heavy backpass from Malouda..and unfortunately (fortunately for us) he slipped when he tried to twist his body hard & fast to try recover back the ball. it could happen to anyone tho..

1. Poor Juan, it looks like his goal didn't Mata.

2. Torres: 50m pounds. van Persie: 2.7m pounds.

3. What's the time? Oh, it's 5 past Cech.

Ps: No offense to the Chelsea fans.... Just for fun biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Kos is the man. He can be a top class CB in Premier League if he keeps producing magnificient performances.

Santos starts to show his offensive capabilities with his dribbling and shooting abilities thumbup.gif but playing too wide may caused him to be caught out-of-position especially against a very pacey winger. Luckily Song did his job very very well ptotecting our back four. Hope he will turn out to become our version of Makalele.

Gervinho dribbling skills were really silky now i understand why he's nicknamed after a brazilian.

And Arteta surprisingly starts in every BPL matches hope he's fit till end of the season. He and Song seems to gel together and form a compatible partnership.

Yesterday's match has so much entertainment value. More so because of such an open game from both teams.

"It was fantastic to watch, both teams went for it. In the second half I felt we were completely dominating the game and created chance after chance. Overall we have shown quality and mental strength as well. To go 2-1 down and come out the way we did shows great resolve in the team. I thought we looked fragile in defence in the first half but we looked dangerous going forward. We achieved the target of winning a big game away from home and did it with style, but we have to keep our feet on the ground and focus on another big game on Tuesday. That's the football we want to play, you always think you can get rid of the defensive mistakes we had in the first half."

I think Szcesny really got very lucky that he not getting sent off.

I don't think it's about lucky or not.

First, he was not the last man.

Second, it was not a clear goal opportunity. You can see that Arsenal defenders were already tracking back to the penalty box.

Congratulations, As i said every dog has it day. Really great performance by RVP. But i think your first choice keeper schenzeny is still pretty inexperience and that might cost you guys much more later on.

If you watch the replay, the goal my mata from a First Person point of view he got the foot work quite bad !

Szczcesny was below average in the game yesterday , no doubt . Didn't looks comfortable at all during set pieces . He is better in that department during other games , so hopefully yesterday was just a one game off .

To be fair , he did won us a some games and is a better presence than the other keepers we had . We can only hope he get matured and gain more experience throughout games .

He might cost us points but at the same time he has the ability to win us points and he has shown that already so it pretty much balances out. Many tend to forget his age and will only get better as he builds experience.

You can throw names in like Joe Hart or De Gea or whoever but I won't swap him for anyone. With such ability at only 21 I shudder to think how good he will become 5 years down the line.

Yes, your points are valid, but giving the intensity of the match, if given other ref, it might be a sent off too. That's why i'm said 'lucky'. smile.gif

imo,
if our GK was the last men/and he deny clear scoring opportunity and at the SAME TIME not being sent off, this i will call lucky

i know where u are coming from harry, but there's a fine line upon reaching the word lucky

Just finished watching the full match, and what obvious extra points that I could see is Ivanovic can be the next actor! A slight push from RVP and he's falling like when Joey Barton was 'punched' by Gervinho! Aside from that, Rosicky is still pretty much sharp, its just that he needs to keep his positioning well during attacking, he could've had a chance to score though. AVB on the other hand, I have a big respect on this young manager. He has great passion in doing his job, just look at the way he reacts after Chelsea scores, particularly after Mata scored. He is bursting a lava of feelings from his inside. "RVP the MVP", perfectly said by the commentator. Nothing could stop him from scoring at the moment, just hope that he'll stay fit and injury-free. Good to see AW smiling again week after week, he deserves that. A superb match, great 3 points, and Arsenal are moving forward again icon_idea.gif

Great, morale-boosting win !! Still, our defence looked shaky & I'd say all 3 goals we conceded must be replayed hundreds of times by our defensive coach (shud we decide to get one).. luckily their defence was worse than ours....

Guess what.. we have bragging rights for a week at least... biggrin.gif

When was the last time we had a top goalscorer in the league, somewhere in the season, without sharing it with another player with the same tally?  rclxm9.gif
*
This only emphasises how dependent we are on Robin for goals. Man City has 2 players scoring 9, while our next highest scorer only brought home 2. Every Henry needs his Pires and Ljungberg - it's about time for Gervy and Theo to start sharing more burden.

Woj is far from being the finished article. He deserves applause for his spirit, his confidence, and many amazing saves that kept us from having egg on our faces. Yet his flaws remains - especially dealing with long range, unexpected shots. At the moment he is more Uncle Jens than Big Dave, but he has age (and lots of swagger) on his side.

Scz is in a way feeding on our offensive power to learn, be better

as it stands so far so good, not that much of a backfire
of course he did part saving us on countless 1on1 situation, which we should really give him more credits for that
we could have easily lost a lot more pts over the past game weeks

"Breaking News-> Koscielny left Stamford Bridge with 50 Million in his back pocket"

Tribute to Kos.
http://www.stonecoldarsenal.com/2011/10/th...ARSENAL+BLOG%29

I especially love this part:
QUOTE
I think people are missing the point. The question is not who will partner Thomas Vermaelen in central defence. The more substantive question is out of Vermaelen, Mertesacker and Djourou, who will be Laurent Koscielny’s preferred partner.

Indeed. Judging from how well Kos is playing, and Vermy likely to need games to regain fitness, Kos is the undisputed first choice for now. I remain sceptical with JD as a convincing alternative for now. Squillaci? sorry Seb, just can't see it happening.

The main talking point is Chelsea play way too high to accommodate AVB pressure and attacking style. Ashley Cole and Bosingwa has been pushed up to the flank similar to Dani Alves role, sometime they play like no proper defending LB / RB. Did you see how ridiculously high John Terry and Ivanovic line before Malouda made that overhit pass? Terry and Ivanovic are not that mobile and fast to cope with fast paced counter attack.
It was way higher than usual Arsenal defensive line which already deemed as too risky by some pundit.

Anyway, credit must be given to Villas-Boas as he try to bring new identity to Chelsea playstyle. He and Arsene Wenger share similar view in their respective philosophy.

QUOTE
"The philosophy is a personal value and a club value. You should never sell it cheaply. It is something that makes us all proud and we will stick to this philosophy. It is our way of playing and we are proud of the way we play. We just have to correct things." - Villas-Boas

Great word there Villas-Boas, this young manager need to be given chances to prove himself and his attacking philosophy.

yes, there are all kinds of space behind Chelsea line and many chances can be created if played against a pacey team. The 4th goal showed Terry was just meters behind the half line. All 4 defenders were outpaced with spaces behind them. And also, its good to see another 'philosophy' type of manager in EPL, now its even mroe interesting to watch EPL. biggrin.gif

interesting.arsenal playing more direct instead of the barca style of passing.a little reminiscent of the invincibles where we played more direct, counter attacks and lots of runs.with gervinho and walcott running on the flanks, the difference between the current team and the invincibles are the three men midfield and the no 10 and no 14 role.we have three men midfield to control the game with all three of them rotate in terms of defending and attacking responsibilities.we no longer have the one shield and one box-to-box player like gilberto and viera.but these three midfielders control the midfield just like gil-viera did.the change of the no 10 role,we can see RVP is a combined of bergkamp's touch and henry's finish.this is where the theo's role become important.running down the wings like henry did and provide the pass towards RVP and sometimes he finish it off by himself.

we're getting there, fellow gunners.we're getting there.let's see how this team will grow.

how many pts we collected for UCL group so far? i would suggest rest RvP, let him play for 2nd half, if can, just let him play like 15-20mins
the league still long to go, if Man city slip up during their encounter with Liverpool and Chelsea, we're just 6points gap with Man city

Expecting to see vermysecker partnership tomorrow. Koci needs to rest. Maybe rvp will be on the bench.

My choice against marsaille

Szcz
Dj per vermy santos
Song ramsey arteta
Arsha chamakh gervy

But if we going all out, expect the same line up at chelsea.

Come on u gunners!
*
i think a few Gunners are due a breather while some are due for action time so i think we will go with this

Wojciech
Carl -- Per -- TV5 -- Kieran (assuming he is available for selection)
Tomas -- Mikel -- Pink Haired Manu Frimpong
Yossi -- Park -- Andy

i believe arsene should give arshavin his favourite role against marseille.

give him play the role behind the striker and we will see a very effective Arshavin.
I think we should give RVP a rest, either JYP or Chamakh should start but seeing how it is. I am sure Chamakh will get the nod ahead of JYP.

Go Gunners! 1 game at a time people.
doesnt mean we won Chelsea meaning we are going to be going somewhere.
Dont get your heads up too high.

Qualification in UCL is the main priority now. We must win to ensure qualifications to group stage. There are a lot at stake. Money and pride...

btw, chamakh is out.if RVP will be rested,JYPark will be up and running.but truth to be told,i rather rest him next weekend instead of tomorrow night.a win tomorrow will ensure the qualification for next round so i think AW will starts with RVP.

Interesting...
http://arsenalvision.co.uk/articles/3824-i...the-answer.html

Regardless that the two Manchester clubs are leading the pack by playing their own variations of 442, I am still sceptical of us following suit. Our current players do not suit a traditional 442 setup, and our previous most successful period (the invincibles) didn't exactly conform to that either despite often starting with that formation.

At the moment we are gradually finding our feet. Moreover, we're moving away from the tippy-tappy possession based football and rather playing towards our strengths, i.e. pace with two speed merchants upfront. Don't fix something that ain't broke.

QUOTE(sickx @ Oct 31 2011, 11:04 AM)
interesting.arsenal playing more direct instead of the barca style of passing.a little reminiscent of the invincibles where we played more direct, counter attacks and lots of runs.with gervinho and walcott running on the flanks, the difference between the current team and the invincibles are the three men midfield and the no 10 and no 14 role.we have three men midfield to control the game with all three of them rotate in terms of defending and attacking responsibilities.we no longer have the one shield and one box-to-box player like gilberto and viera.but these three midfielders control the midfield just like gil-viera did.the change of the no 10 role,we can see RVP is a combined of bergkamp's touch and henry's finish.this is where the theo's role become important.running down the wings like henry did and provide the pass towards RVP and sometimes he finish it off by himself.

we're getting there, fellow gunners.we're getting there.let's see how this team will grow.
*
Our invincible team never played a 4 man midfield either. It's often 2 central midfielders (Paddy as box-to-box with Gilberto shielding), Dennis in the hole, Titi free roaming while supporting by Bobby and Freddie on the flanks. The speed and mobility of the front three with Dennis's vision were crucial in the counter attacking blitzkrieg style deployed back then.

The change to 433 was necessary due to 3 reasons - the lack of commanding central midfielders (Song was only starting to grow, the loss of the energetic Flamini, the loss of Hleb and Rosicky due to respective reasons), the need to unleash Fabregas's potential as an attacking player, and the change of Robin from a right-sided player to a false-9. The initial 3 man midfield was somewhat balanced with Song playing as the shield, Fabregas furthest upfront, and Denilson keeping things simple. It worked beautifully - we thrashed Everton in our curtain raiser.

Denilson's back injury meant this midfield combination didn't last long, while Robin's lengthy absence forced us to depend on Fabregas for goals hence pushing him further upfront. Diaby's on-and-off injuries prevented him from establishing himself as an important member too. Nasri's later arrival meant we had more creativity, more fluidity, and more goals in midfield; but while he flourished (only for 1/2 a season to be honest) on the wings, he disappointed in the Fabregas role and the even bizarre but thankfully short stint as deep central midfielder.

The loss of Fabregas is no doubt huge, imagine what he could do if he was still here with Robin scoring like fun and both Gervy and Theo getting in behind defences. Regardless, our current midfield setup is back to its most balanced state since we first adapted the 3 man midfield. Song is still the deepest, but he has improved himself and is now much more mobile and dare I say creative. Arteta is playing Denilson's role albeit with 10 times more composure and efficiency, while Rambo is developing into a Gerrard-type marauder with exceptional vision after being out for a year. No one has replaced Fabregas, no one truly can, but our midfield has now evolved into a more complete unit. This is not even including Jack Wilshere, who combines Flamini's energy and Rosicky's dynamism, with a Fabregaseque vision and attacking flair.

We're far from finished in terms of rebuilding this team, but we're on the right track. January, and the coming summer will be exceptionally important. We'll need to keep Robin at all costs, we'll need to further strengthen the team (we'll still need a proper striker/attacking player as well as cover for the fullbacks), and we'll need to keep getting rid of deadwood to make space for new players/upcoming youngsters. Denilson's stinking stint in Brazil will only push him further away from returning to the first team, Almunia's good as gone, I can't see Vela in any long term plans, Bendtner's pretty much burnt his bridges, and Diaby's legs don't seem to ever recover. This summer's a good lesson for everyone, and now that we've got our pretty decent goods from Target, it's time to shop at Harrod's.

Walaoeh!

i acknowledge the fact that we only have two midfielders back then instead of three right now.and reverting back to 442 is not the answer but what we have right now is more or less the same with the last successful formation, the invincible.RVP may need a striking partner but for me,theo, gervinho or even one of the midfielders should go into the box more often.we have seen so many times RVP being isolated alone up front that makes people think we need to revert back 442.without changing our formation,i think the solution is other players should get into the box and help RVP if he can't do it himself.

for january transfer,i hope AW will bring in more quality backups especially in RB.i think carl is too inexperience and we can't depend on djorou to be our backup RB for the rest of the season.denilson and bendtner should be off by next year.for now,the only deadwood i see in our team is squillaci.others are good enough to be backup especially rosicky who is i think slowly getting back to a player he used to be.

c'mon now, is that really necessary?

Kolo was a Gunner, a good one at that. always give 100% during his time with us. some may even be inclined to put him in the 'Legend' bracket. and to my knowledge, he never badmouthed us in any way and always speaks very highly on us and the boss. even the boss backed him up on the drug case.

calling him a 'drug player' is an insult, an un-necessary one at that.

i think Laurent's ceiling is way higher than Kolo, while his performances this year are as good as any that Kolo had produced over the years he was with us. but yeah, as of this point Kolo did produced good to excellent performances throughout longer period of time compared to Laurent

Er, at the moment he is no Vermy or Kosi or Merstacker.

Tonite we will see the same lineup as chelsea. Maybe arsh for walcott, n vermy for per. I dont see much more than that. Rvp is on fire now n i think he will start. Park will have a chance n will b a surprise if he starts.

Whatever it is.... Come on u gunners!

Added on November 1, 2011, 8:56 pmBtw pity diaby though... More setback. Hope he will recover his form like rosicky n vermaelen

Wenger tempted to stick with same side
QUOTE(arsenal.com)
Arsène Wenger admits he is reluctant to rotate his team against Marseille on Tuesday night.

Arsenal are on a roll right now. They have won eight of their last nine games and another victory against the French giants would put the Emirates Stadium side in the Knockout Stages for the 12th successive season.
..
"I [changed players] away from home at Donetsk last season and got punished," he said.

"First we want to qualify of course. But then I did it when we were qualified and we paid a heavy price [by finishing second in the Group]. But you could finish first this season and still play Barca!"

i think this might answer all your question for today's lineup. nod.gif

That is harsh. We have created some very good chances and we are playing some good football. Unless you expected like 30 shots to be like a home team? Marseille are very good defensively and I'm surprised we even created that many to begin with. We should be 1 or 2 in front though. I hope the chances we missed won't come back to haunt us.

Not the best 1st half for us but i still accept it seeing how fast the pace of the game is.

Even Ramsey miss that open chance, i still say he has improve tremendously compare to previous games. Previously is like he became a liability for the midfield, but now he is the one carrying the team. My god his pass has became so smooth already and now he dares to take on the challenge of through ball.

On the other hand, Santos i dono what to say about his defending quite speechless but his attacking play don't resemble a full-back but a freaking striker lol.

PCY was dull in the game but he probably don't realise how quick the pace and how much he need to adapt to the game.

Vermysacker so far so good

Poor pass in first half .park didn't adapt quite well IMO. Rambo miss few chances. Walcott looks furious.

Park doesn't click well with his team-mate particularly Gervinho. Maybe that's why he always benched.

Was abit surprised to see most of Marseille players' pace which is on par with Walcott. The buffier Ramsey probably shake head in disappointed because couldn't catch up with them.

Defence was quite good. Jenkinson was comfortable at rightback and did well along the flanks. Park was dissapointing tho, he was slow and didnt do well off the ball. He do need time to settle in, hopefully he'll do that during cup matches..

well defensive side by OM...but AFC still get plenty of chances (Ramsey, Gervinho, RVP) to put ahead...well played by defense esp Vermaelen...clumsy 1st touch & passes + lack of creativity by AFC attacking side esp from Park look offensive less effective today..still have plenty of room to improve..ok la 1 point..hehe

marseille came with the right attitude
take nth away from them, they deserved a point
wasn't anything like the chelsea game
instead a battle of perseverance or endurance

kinda disappointed at one moment with ramsey, hesitated to took a shot upon receiving the ball from Gervinho,
place it bottom right corner!!!! or top corner if he like it..dangggg

1 point is fine, especially against a well organized away team.

I do have some doubts on our fullbacks. Sagna being injured and Santos being defensively inferior as compared to his offensive performance

Park was not impressive enough... I think we really have to trust AW. Many of us questioned why AOC, Park & street fighter Ryo not starting games when Walcott + Arshavin played badly. Now we know.

When played againts top teams, they struggled. No doubt they'll be there soon but not now.

When againts Man City later in CC, if they impressed, then they are ready for any European Giants.

Frimpong can do watever hell he wants with his hair, just show the same flair on the pitch. He has yet to impress me so far this season.
*
Aside from the red card, he's been good on the pitch so far breaking opponent's attack.
I'm happy to see him play when Song is unavailable

Not a super ultra dominating first half, but both the chances we had were taken superbly.

This is the type of display we need to win any normal EPL games by either grinding it out or just playing it Arsenal style.

So excited by Arsenal prospect already even when we don't have 2 key players such as Sagna and Wilshere.

Go for more in 2nd half!

Every1 is playing very well tonight, except Szczesny (he hardly got chance to touch the ball). This game is like we are playing FIFA, opponent hardly got time to touch the ball~

Our team tonight is very close to the way we used to play during our peak time (when we have pires, henry, bergkamp..etc), beautiful football~
