How much should I squat if I'm just getting started? I'm a marathon runner but I'm not used to lifting weights. 19yrs old, 172cm, 64kg. Btw, I did like 10reps of 40kg yesterday and the back part above my waist & shoulders feels a bit sore today, should I continue lifting tomorrow and what reps should I do? Thanks! QUOTE(Aztec @ Feb 23 2012, 10:31 PM) getting started..if ur doing it properly which means ATG..prolly no more than the empty bar or maybe 10lbs each side Ur saying my butt should almost touch the floor? I've done lunges before sometime back lol, don't know if it's the same as squats QUOTE(-Dan @ Feb 23 2012, 11:04 PM) You've never done squats before? I suggest just using the barbell, until you can squat with perfect form. I did my first squats(10x @40kg) yesterday, idk if I should continue doing it tomorrow. Just wondering what's the suitable weight I should get started on

QUOTE(-Dan @ Feb 23 2012, 11:50 PM) They're not the same. And start with an empty barbell to learn the form first. Post a video, even, so some of the regs can give you pointers. Ok, so it's 1 hand 1 barbell? I've already watched the videos on the squat thread and I can always ask for help from the trainers there QUOTE(mikehuan @ Feb 24 2012, 12:21 AM) ehhh i dont get it, how are lunges similar to squats? anyhow, theres a squat thread pinned, take a look at it. Idk...I thought they both strengthen ur lower body, legs etc...

Will I lose some muscle mass if I do more cardio than weights? For example in a week, I run 2 times outdoors, 30-40mins each time and then another 2 times on the treadmill, 20mins each session before doing weights.

Guys, I'm having some pain at my thighs today(inner & back), even sitting on the toilet bowl feels tough, after doing some bench press, squats, barbell rows, curls.
Just wanna know which workout caused it? Im guessing it was the barbell rows coz I can feel the hamstring pulling when I bend down.
Thanks

QUOTE(-Dan @ Apr 1 2012, 02:08 AM) The squats, most likely. Is this your first time squatting? Nope, about my 7th time(only 25kg, both squats n rows) I think haha, but I did all of the above in 1 hour after not going to the gym for 2 weeks. I did jog on the treadmill for 20mins before though. Btw I'm currently following the stronglifts guide This post has been edited by deadmau5: Apr 1 2012, 02:23 AM

QUOTE(janson_kaniaz @ Apr 1 2012, 09:48 AM) i think the squat as well. QUOTE(reddevilchoo @ Apr 1 2012, 01:20 PM) Most likely squat. But I love the pain afterall. Hmm that's kinda weird since it's not my first time doing squats, it was my first time doing barbell rows instead lol. I did manage to jog 5-6km today even though there's still some soreness when squatting down. This post has been edited by deadmau5: Apr 1 2012, 10:24 PM

QUOTE(janson_kaniaz @ Apr 1 2012, 10:36 PM) it's not the matter of doing it first time or not. it's wrong also to think when you do something 1st time u tend to do it wrong. the symptom is pointing towards squat as the main cause. Thanks for clarifying One more thing, is it better to bend ur knees a little or keep it straight when rowing? The stronglifts one bends a little but that scooby dude says keep them straight with the back arching at 90 degrees & chest out/up. I tried both and they don't feel quite right.

QUOTE(shankar_dass93 @ Apr 6 2012, 10:47 AM) Still prefer training at cf Wangsa walk. Did you check out the lockers in uni gym ?damn, its really small and I bet you can't put in your college bag and a gym bag together. If I'm driving to uni then I could leave it in my car but sadly I'm not. Added on April 6, 2012, 10:48 amWhat course are you studying ? Just finished my hospitality mgmt diploma, still deciding whether I wanna continue or change to a business degree
